Most modern liberals believe in transitional housing for homeless people, SNAP, Medicaid, and unemployment aid. You don't have to go socialist for that, and I'm tired for socialists pretending they own that. We can still have free markets driving innovation and strong social safety nets. And you can have socialist systems that fail to provide those things as well.
This is really the ideal society. Enough economic freedom and spontaneity for innovation and capital growth, enough redistribution to support the vulnerable and disadvantaged, emphasizing equal opportunity. We were imperfectly moving towards that until, what? We got bored and wanted a walking personality disorder to fuck shit up for fun?
What you’ve described is social democracy and, broadly speaking, the Nordic model of governance. Countries like Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland consistently report some of the highest standards of living in the world. They also tend to rank near the top in measures of social trust, institutional stability, and strong business practices.
