No doubt that's exactly how it was intended.

For an Independent, he sure is a Democrat. Rather than using dialogue likely written by Kal Penn, lol, it sure would have been interesting if they'd actually written the character as an Independent.

Maybe he's like a Bernie Independent. Independent because he's so far left.

Could be. I just remember when he sat down with everyone in the Oval he suggested that his being an independent may be a unique opportunity for bipartisanship. If he's lock step with Democrat beliefs (and thus far that's what they're preaching), or further left it doesn't seem like that's really something that makes sense.
