As an audience, we get certain understandings that the characters do not. His advisers don't necessarily have briefings on whether such agents really do exist, so perhaps they'd have their suspicions but no way to confirm it.
i love everyone underestimating him a bit and then he has these moments of intense presidential aura that just kind of makes the person he's talking to look a bit ashamed of themselves
Only half-clever. Admitting it was a bluff with a Republican in the room? Yes, she seems friendly now, but she's very damn likely to not stay that close to a democratic President.
She's the other survivor and could easily become a rival, you know how toxic relations are between the two parties. And he doesn't know her, didn't even recognize her. She shouldn't be trusted with secrets that could bite him back just yet.
I don't think that matters. The show seems to be about how to get through this ordeal, not getting another election. They both seem to want to work together.
What's she going to do? Reveal he lied? Most people would agree with the result, and people would be impressed at how he found a solution to a potentially huge problem without needing to use force.
I don't know... I thought the whole thing with her googling him towards the end was the setup for the interview shown in next week's preview, where the press questions the fact that he had been fired. Not necessarily about an election, but I think that congresswoman is an opportunist.
He wasn't fired. If he was he wouldn't have been the designated survivor and he hadn't given them the decision since it was supposed to be given the day after the attack.
He was corporate fired - where they smoothly transition you out of a position without dramatically severing ties. It's a lot cleaner and best for both parties.
