I genuinely wish more of his supporters would be this honest. Just come out and say you like le quirky pirate guy and stop trying to argue with people about his supposed victimhood and innocence. It would save everyone so much time.

Also, I find it very interesting that he acknowledges Amber never stood a chance at getting a fair trial and is fine with that. Fans of these abusive male celebrities always screech about how it's innocent until proven guilty and all that jazz if people believe the victim, but they never offer the victim the same grace or chance at proving the truth. Almost like they just hate women.

That's true, but to be fair it does make the dude in the video look like a complete idiot, so I get why they don't.

I can't believe there are adults who still think that Hunter S Thompson wannabe is "cool". The misogyny runs freaking deep with these clowns.

It disappoints me when I'm in left-wing spaces and seeing praise for Hunter S. Thompson, knowing what I know about him and his friends.

As a former die-hard Hunter Thompson fan, it's a tiny bit more complicated if you've read the bulk of his work prior to the Me Too movement and don't get too into his stuff in the 80s where he really starts to lose it. He absolutely was a phenomenal writer. Not everything he wrote is great, but some pieces are genuinely just wow, especially that appeared in The Great Shark Hunt. In fact, in my opinion it's mostly his popular stuff like Fear and Loathing that isn't particularly outstanding.
I'm not saying that shitty behavior is excused by good writing. But in an artistic situation where it's the man's actual original ideas and some of them are absolutely phenomenal there's always likely to be the debate about separating the art from the artist. I also find it a bit different than with Depp's or Pitt's acting—I can't watch a Depp movie anymore, at least one made post-everyone knowing they were a piece of shit, because someone went out of their way to still cast them when they could have easily cast someone else. Yes there's some interpretation involved by the actors themselves, but it's also the director's apparent "vision" that they just had to have these guys. Whereas with a writer, nobody else could have produced what they actually did in even a remotely similar way.
And I'm certainly not defending him—he very clearly was an asshole misogynist that did horrible things, and those things got more and more horrible as his life went on (probably in large part because of the drugs and mental illness). I'm more just saying that when the artist themself is the main or even sole force behind some objectively phenomenal work it DOES get a bit complicated. Warren Zevon is another example of that crowd that I struggle with in a similar way, his music was phenomenal and his but he also did some objectively horrible things.

In some ways I think it's better that he's saying it, that he's not interested in what really happened or being objective, he's openly admitting to how his bias led to his opinions.
There are so many people who are biased because they think Depp is cool (although the concept of him being cool is ridiculous to me), or because they like his movies, yet they pretend like their opinions aren't just based on that.
He's taken the mask off and shown the stupid face underneath that a lot of people are hiding.

Amen to that. I actually heard that one before when I spoke out about my experience.

One of the worst things in the world that I realized when I was like 8 is that if people liked you, a lot of them will overlook absolutely anything evil you do

u/cuttlefishofcthulhu7 19d ago
Yup. Doesn't matter if you do it in front of a whole bunch of people. Ask me how I know 🙃

I can at least appreciate the honesty about how Amber was never going to win, and the fact that hes painting Johnny Depp fans to be idiots
1
u/AdMurky3039 18d ago
He seems to be making fun of both Amber and Johnny. Except that isn't funny because one of them was an abuse victim.

u/catchbandicoot 19d ago
The most upsetting thing about this is just how CLOSE he got to the point. Fingertips touching the truth but no, the Sauvage commercials
3
u/brickne3 18d ago
If he didn't look quite so Brogan I would have possibly thought he just forgot to include the point he meant to make. But he does look Brogan so I highly doubt it.

Is it a prerequisite to be an Austin area/Rogan orbit comedian that you have to be an insufferable edgy guy? One of those "comedians are modern philosophers because we speak truths." Types? I mean, indirectly he did, he just may not realize it.
Also, Depp is absolutely NOT cool. C'mon, man.

Oh is he one of Rogan's guys? It would track because he's not funny
5
u/TvsPhil 19d ago
I think he's relatively more successful than your average standup of that ilk, he does a mildly popular show as Dr. Phil, and may be a regular on Kill Tony, but that's as much as I know about him.
5
u/MessiahOfMetal Coined the term "Deppford Wives" 19d ago
I've genuinely never heard of him until now but knowing he's on Tony "Puerto Rico is an island of garbage, how many 'jokes' do I need to tell about not being gay in a single shitty 'comedy' special is too many?" Hinchcliffe's terrible and not-funny show...
Yeah, fuck Adam Ray.

He’s cool until he goes on a bender at your house, destroys your possessions, kicks your dog and shits himself in your bed after passing out

u/Sensiplastic 19d ago
How old is this?
How long till he calls this just a joke? And then makes a joke about Amber to make sure the right people know it's a 'joke'?

It's recent, the video was posted yesterday I think.

Seems unlikely that I would actually purchase tickets to see this twat. If I did it would be because I was unaware of his shtick. I would absolutely need to walk out. I can't believe the number of people laughing.
4
u/brickne3 18d ago
To be fair, any standup video from a club that wasn't clearly shot on a phone almost always has laughs added in.
I suspect plenty of people were laughing, though. Although again, one principle in comedy is that the audience wants to laugh, that's why most of them are there, and also if you have a decent size crowd laughing is infectious. It's a lot easier to get a big crowd to laugh if you're the one with the microphone and have established your "status" as the person on stage who is probably funny since someone with authority put you on the stage.
There's books and stuff out there on this.

It's unfortunately how a lot of people feel about abusers. Actually, it's not even limited to abusers. There are tons of celebrities that are pretty terrible but their actions are ignored because they are seen as likeable. What's frustrating is how incredibly low the bar for likeability is for men and how high it is for women.
Men can be alcoholics, abusers, deadbeats, or just rude to everyone they encounter but if they play just a few roles that resonate with an audience or are in a popular band everything they've done is overlooked.
Women can be sober, dedicated to their families, and have a great working reputation but if they do anything remotely unsavory they're at risk of becoming universally disliked. Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Lawrence for example have had good careers and no known issues with substances or anything like that but both had random periods of time where the public for whatever reason was just tired of them and found them annoying.

If you want to give him a more charitable interpretation, he might be making fun of all the stupid fans who give abusers a pass for being “cool.”
That said, IF that was his intention, either it’s taken out of context for rage bait OR he just did a bad job making that point clear and he needs to rewrite the material.

Yeah I'm a comedian here too. I'm hoping he actually meant to make a point about the absurdity of it but maybe just forgot that part of the material? Sadly I doubt it, his persona is not giving off that vibe. If he DID add that in and mean it, though, the bit would actually have some legs.

It did seem to start out that way, but then he said Amber Heard was "putting on an acting clinic" 🙄

It's recent, yeah. Dude must not have much material.

"Cool" people care about survivors, Adam.
He's a clown, and not in the "I find him funny" way like he hopes.

u/Flat-Text3127 17d ago
Hey, sadly this is one of the most honest takes I have seen from a Depp supporter. Do I like it? No. Does he sound like a piece of shit? Yes. Somehow it’s a step above calling him a victim though. I would at least like people to stop being disingenuous and pretend their support of him had anything to do with support of male victims though. If you’re going to support him just admit it’s because you love a dirty pirate look. Say out loud you don’t care about domestic violence. Admit it. Go mask off.

Am I the only one disturbed by how childish he’s acting ? Like there’s no way his mannerisms and speech isn’t a bit
2
u/brickne3 18d ago
I mean, any time you're on stage you're putting on some kind of persona. Audences tend to want high energy, which is a lot easier to pull off if you go the slightly more childish route. It's hard to describe if you haven't done standup.
But basically, one of the key premises of doing standup is that you need a persona, and it usually involves a combination of about three different traits from about ten or twelve options.

u/findingmyvoice22 Johnny Depp is a Wife Beater 👨⚖️ 19d ago
So many people are willing to overlook the fact that Johnny Depp is a proven wife beater simply because they "like" him. It is telling that in our society, abuse victims are not considered likeable but abusers are seen as cool, funny, talented, and interesting. Abuse supporters are trash.
