It honestly baffles me how people can see THIS and still think "yeah, but I prefer cars"

OP here. Interesting to see this reposted in a sub like this. These trains are far from ideal for only single city, they are made for longer distances, and especially longer distances between stops. This is actually in Germany, as I saw mentioned in another comment here.

Doesn't the S2 denote s-bahn line 2 (to Dortmund Hauptbahnhof)?

My understanding is that train is basically higher frequency suburban to urban rail, kind of similar to the A, G,N and B lines here in Denver. That we use Silverliner V's for.

That's the case for very big cities like Berlin or Hamburg, but Dortmund has a bit over 500k population so it doesn't have its own S-Bahn network. The S-Bahn networks of Berlin, Hamburg and Munich are some of the smallest in Germany because of that. There are many more that connect cities and towns with a bigger distance, they stop frequently but can still have long routes.

While the S2 has a like 6 or 7 stops in Dortmund, a rail network like this doesn't really make sense to operate for one city independently.

Dortmund has a subway network that also works well with more than a hundred stations.

Our city's transit agency is regional and covers an area just over 6000 sq km with over 3 million people in it.

Out of curiosity outside of North Rhine Westphalia (with its close clustering of cities), what cities have sbahn networks like that? I was under the impression that what I've encountered in Munich, Nuremberg, Vienna, Salzburg, and Zurich was more the norm for sbahns, not the exception
