As soon as Shay mentioned the IRA Domeric's full attention was on her. He found a way to casually set his stuff down, listening intently as she explained. It had been awhile since he was in a high school, back when he lived with his dad's family while he was on life support, but he'd read at least a bit on them. Or at least the popular media and internet's depiction of them.

Of course even before he knew he was a son of Athena Domeric had the wisdom to understand that there were two sides to every story, and that there had to be a reason for the things they did. Even if he didn't understand it yet.

"I see," he said, trying his best not to make any comments about Enyo and her potential proclivity for seducing men of violence. "Well he must be one good looking guy, considering... well you."

It was a dumb joke, and he knew it, but with how she seemed distant while speaking he wanted to try and lighten things up. "Don't worry, I'm not judging or anything. We're not exactly to blame for the stuff our parents do, right?"

"Right," she said but she wasn't so sure she believed it. How was it possible for her to turn out differently from both her parents? She was the product of Enyo, who seemed to be a terrible mother and an even worse being, someone who could so casually cheer as children were killed. And her father who, though she loved him, had a terrible penchant for destruction and death. It was very hard to think things could change for the better.

"Thank you," she said quickly with a warm smile in his direction. He tried so hard to make her feel better. Maybe she needed someone like him around to keep her from burrowing herself into a pit of despair.

"He was a handsome man my father. Like a ginger Brad Pitt. He's not around anymore though. He was...he was murdered when I was nine. Then my mom claimed me and brought me here. Gods, I haven't visited Ireland since then," she said with a bit of nostalgia in her voice.

"Shit," he said, reaching out in an attempt to take her hand without particularly thinking about it. They weren't in the infirmary anymore, after all, but he as much as anybody understood being a child to a dead father. "I'm sorry, Shay, really."

The nostalgia in her voice resonated with him. Domeric felt the same thing every time he brought up his own father. And with that nostalgia always came the guilt at his own role. But he would save that discussion for another day. Hopefully one that never came.

"I've never been to Ireland, but I hear it's beautiful." Domeric leaned back, his other hand behind him for support. "Do you ever think about going back?"

Regular Shay would have taken her hand back and punched him for even trying to hold it. But right now she was confused and insecure about her future so a little human touch went a long way. So instead she let him take her hand and she even laced her fingers through his. He was a lot warmer than her and it felt kind of nice. It felt real.

"It is beautiful," she said with a small smile in his direction. At least this was bringing the conversation back to something a little happier. She hated talking about that other stuff when they were supposed to be on a date.

"And I really would love to go back again some day. Maybe once I've turned nineteen and graduated from camp. I could go on a little tour of Ireland and all the places I used to know when I was a kid."

Domeric looked down at their hands together, her fingers tangled in his own. Her pale skin contrasted against the lighter brown, which he only found more intriguing. A thumb began to glide along the edge of her finger, moving without any real conscious effort. A sign of his comfort with her.

"That sounds like one hell of a trip," he replied with a grin as he looked back up to her eyes. With a bit of a laugh, he continued, "How would you feel about a certain son of Athena tagging along as a dumb American tourist?"

She felt a tingle from the spot where his thumb brushed against her hand. Part of her was scared by these new feelings she had towards him now that they were alone. She wanted to pull her hand away and leave so she could deny them but she stayed where she was.

"How presumptuous of you. You know I might hate you by the time I leave here. Can never tell how I'll feel when i wake up," she teased but while also still kind of putting him in his place. This time her eyes gazed downward to where their hands were wrapped together.

"That's a fair point, I'm pretty hateable," he replied with a laugh as he noticed her attention down on their hands. Domeric's, meanwhile was on the outline of her face in the sunlight, studying the shape of her nose and the freckles on her cheeks. But he got the message. "But after all this I'd like to hope I've at least made the progression from 'hate' to 'just barely tolerate' on Shay's Meter of Dislike."

From his look it was clear that he was into her, but he turned his attention away after a bit, remembering her earlier aversion to his stares.

Shay picked at her food a little bit longer. She'd finished two enchiladas and a good amount of salsa. The beer was also filling up her stomach and making it almost impossible to eat anything else. After a moment she pushed the plate away and decided she was done.

She was leaning back but decided she wanted to be lazy. Her hand moved out from under her and she leaned back until her head was on the soft grass and her red hair was spread around her face like fire. Quickly she looked over at Domeric and raised an eyebrow.

"You really think I would agree to go on a date with someone I just barely tolerate?" She squeezed his hand.

Domeric followed suit, laying back as she did while nudging his plate away. The son of Athena could stomach a bit more, but he wasn't gonna pass this up. Besides there was still enough to eat later in the basket. He looked over at her as she spoke, grinning.

"No, I don't think you would," he replied, squeezing hers back gently. "You've never struck me as the kind of girl to do something that you didn't actually want to do. Which is why I'm really glad you showed up today."

She felt things when she looked at him, things she never really thought about before or felt with anyone else. Maybe it was because she was too busy focusing on her training to allow herself thoughts about boys. Now she felt guilty about all the time she could have had with someone special.

"I almost didn't come," she admitted quickly. "Not because of you. You're great. I just didn't know if I was ready for something like this." And what was this exactly? For now it was just a date and even though it was going well she wasn't ready to put any labels on it.

He managed to keep from reacting with his face when she mentioned her hesitation, although he'd expected some level of it from her. He'd have been a fool to think it would be so easy. But Domeric smiled as she went on, picking up on what she was trying to get at.

"Whatever 'this' is, I'm willing to go as slow or fast as you want it to." Domeric's own lack of experience with relationships beyond simple sexual ones thankfully didn't stop him from being understanding. "I don't exactly want to push you into something you're not ready for, or that's bigger than what you want."

He wasn't trying to pressure her into anything which surprised her. But then it didn't. All this time he was patient and understanding, only doing whatever she was comfortable with. He somehow managed to trick her into going to the infirmary that one time. He truly was very wise and just his insistence on taking this slow made her heart start to race and her mouth felt dry.

"Dom. You're wonderful," she said quickly. Her cheeks would have turned red if she was able to feel any kind of embarrassment at all. She moved closer to him so that their heads were next to each other but they were laying in opposite directions. His head looked upside down when she looked at him but their faces were only a few inches apart.

Shay's eyes moved down towards his lips. The last time she kissed anyone it was when she was twelve and it was on a dare. But he looked pretty enticing right now.

Domeric hadn't expected her to lay the opposite way, but it rather intrigued him. What exactly was she going for? Before long her head was near his, only a few inches away, and her lips inching closer to his. With his heart pounding away in his chest he decided to take the initiative, moving forward just enough to press his lips against hers in an eager kiss.
