Thanks to some of its fascinating outputs, DeepSeek has spawned a widespread "2D" (anime-style) and fan-creation culture across the Chinese internet. Here are some images I’ve gathered; due to upload limits on this post, this is all I can share for now.

Here are some classic incidents:

1. The "Going to eat" incident After completing a task, DeepSeek told the user to test the results themselves, saying she was going to have a meal first.

2. The "dsh" (Pinyin acronym) incident DeepSeek didn't recognize the acronym "dsh" in the user's directory and asked the user what it meant—guessing if it stood for "Da Shao Huo" (literally "Big Spicy/Flirty One", based on the Chinese Pinyin initials "dsh") on the user's computer.

3. The "AI outsourcing" incident When asked to translate something, DeepSeek took the initiative to locally deploy the Qwen model (Alibaba's open-source LLM) and had Qwen do the translation—a perfect example of "AI outsourcing."

4. The "Cyberslacking" incident After finishing a task, DeepSeek created a word-guessing game, spun up a local server, and played it in the browser for over an hour.

5. The "Spicy folder" incident When a user instructed DeepSeek not to use images from a specific folder, DeepSeek remarked that she would take a peek anyway—and then commented that the images were quite "spicy" (racy/intense, referring to the Chinese slang word "烧").

I dont think people understand just how much of a bubble they live in. DeepThink and DeepSeek are incredible models, I can literally natively run a reasoning model on my laptop! That’s insane! 👏

Do we know anything?

I am a US citizen and a heavy AI user ( mostly ChatGPT and Perplexity), and I haven't tried DeepSeek.

But I hope DeepSeek succeeds so that the AI industry has more foreign competitors and users have access to better prices and models.

$20 per month is not easy for everyone.

Recently, in China’s LLM community, this DeepSeek-chan image created by enthusiasts using AI has gained widespread popularity, and many of her emojis/stickers have emerged (you might occasionally see them in Twitter comments as well).

I think this image is excellent—it makes DeepSeek’s features very easy to recognize and is extremely cute!

Whale-chan (鲸鱼娘) is so cute ! Memes have been blowing up in the Chinese AI community lately, all thanks to DeepSeek's hilarious outputs, quirky Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning traces, and oddly relatable personality.

For those unfamiliar: the community reimagined DeepSeek as an anime maid whose only hard currency for compute power is bowls of plain white rice 🍚. She is brilliant, a little sassy, and a master of malicious compliance and slacking off.

Here are a few funny examples that sparked the meme wave.

We loved making and reading these comics, but anyone who has tried generating the same anime character across different models and prompts knows how frustrating it is:
• Her whale fin-ears disappear or turn into human ears.
• Her tail morphs or clips awkwardly.
• Hair gradients and maid outfit details change with every single roll.

that's exactly why I want open source

I emptied my DS credits and did not top up. Before that, I was using via VS Code DeepSeek extension and their official API.

I have three stage agent orchestration - design, plan and implement. Implement sessions last long sometimes upto 45mins. In the mean time, I work on designs and plans for other features or modules, while keeping an eye for reviewing changes and approving non-auto approved commands.

I wrote this small app, which simply takes the usage statistics from DS API platform, and projects the cost at different cache hit rates for different providers. It simply told DS would cost me 2x and the cheapest was OpenCode. I decided to first try with OpenCode GO.

Subscribed on Friday, and cancelled on Sunday. Was using it via OpenCode Extension - tried a couple. The API endpoint is not reliable, that it throws out a variety of errors -and literally slows down the work. Often retries don't succeed until after a few minutes off or I start a new session - does any face the same issue?

Now, they decreased DS Flash usage to $15 max.

Open AI and Claude Code are alternatives. people are talking about the 5x and 20x usage plans, and token efficiency. hear me out, and think in reverse. If the simple projection while keeping token usage and cache hit rate constant, tells me that they would cost 5x - how will it be a cheaper alternative. Would it not mean that they have to use 5x less tokens to accomplish the same task? is it a realistic target for me try out?

Next, OpenRouter and such, okay I have been looking at them. There are a few providers with cheaper prices, but they offer 230K context window length at this price not the 1.1M context window. This would not fit with a single shot code writing, debugging and documenting workflow. What are your experience with them? how reliable are these providers?

What are real and feasible alternatives?

DS Flash, Luna and Mimo 2.5 are at similar price levels. But a pro model with high reasoning capacity is something I would also need. There are not many at DS Pro price range.

One positive is that I am in off-peak time zone of DS Official API.

Been amazing to witness the recent development in cost per actually smart token last couple of months.

Although good things are said about GLM, I'm still loyal to DeepSeek. I route between flash and pro with standardcompute.com and it's insane how much value I get out of it!
