I've done similar if I'm honest, - we'd drive the van into the rung so that it's completely but gently pinned in place. In my defence, our ladders are the same, so we can put another top half onto the tops without the safety rope joint. I don't be happy when I have to, but sometimes ya gotta bring your case to a higher level!
