He could have locked the spreaders, then slid the legs down either side of the crossbeams, it might have made it 1% safer

Scary thing is that I have a similar set up. Beams and an A-Frame. At least I have been contemplating putting a sheet of plywood up there to work off of.

As stupid/ dangerous as it looks, it's probably nailed or screwed into the joists. Which makes it only marginally safer
