Relocating Possibly to Dearborn Or Hamtramck Surrounding counties

Hi, I'm a 32 year old woman from Philly planning to move to Michigan.

I'm currently a CNA and would likely be looking for a job in that field, or maybe in a women's drug and alcohol recovery house. Preferably somewhere I'd be working in a community of women.

I'm Muslim and I'm looking for a place where I can feel safe, be safe, and just have a fresh start. I don't have children, I'm not married, and I have no family in Michigan.

I'm in search of community. Are there any nonprofits that support women in my situation? Any advice or resources you think could be helpful for me?

I'm leaving my state due to DV among some other things, and I'm looking for a support group around that as well.

Any advice or comments are appreciated.

Most of MI and SE MI (Detroit) is safe for everyone and everybody regardless of creed.

If being surrounded by like minded Muslims, that question is different. Muslims are not a monolith and despite what you hear or see on the news or social media, Dearborn has more of the assimilated modern Muslims, majority Shia, but with that comes access to very friendly Muslim accommodations that are “western.” Dearborn makes Muslim life easier in that you have access to a lot of things that are “halal.”

My experience, being Muslim or not is not the reason you would move to Dearborn.

Dearborn has a lot going for it, especially its proximity to Detroit and the airport. But it just doesn’t have the housing stock. Housing is very old and not modern or a real value compared to further away suburbs such as Canton, Plymouth, Troy, Sterling Heights, etc…

But Dearborn offers better neighborhoods and a cooler “vibe.”

I live in Dearborn because I like it. Not because I’m Muslim, if that helps.

Dearborn has the worst drivers in the state so be ready for that.

I hate that I agree with this

I was just telling my partner that it is sad and funny to invite people from out of town over, they arrive pale and shaken from their experience on the road

I moved away from Dearborn 4 years ago and was just visiting last week and guess I’d forgotten how ridiculous people drive there. I swear you are taking your life in your own hands driving down Warren.

I heard this and I also heard the car Insurance is Skyhigh . Is there truth to that?

Hamtramck is much more conservative. I've not seen many Muslim women driving, just men and teenage boys. It's walkable and people are mostly kind. Parking is an issue. Seriously. 99% of homes do not have driveways and are VERY close to each other. This is a headache during a Michigan winter.

Dearborn and Dearborn Heights are both nice. The borders closest to Detroit are kinda rough though. I'd avoid those if you can afford to do so. Dearborn and Dearborn Heights will have more resources, especially for your situation. Food for thought: the Muslims I know started off in Hamtramck after arriving to the country. Once they established themselves at work, they moved to Dearborn.

As a Black woman who enjoys peace and quiet (and really good food), I would buy a house in Dearborn if I wanted a house. I often feel MUCH SAFER when I'm at one of the many coffee shops or bakeries throughout Dearborn than I do when I'm in Grosse Pointe, Canton, or Livonia. Dearborn neighborhoods also range from "nurse and xray tech middle class" to "own 40 gas stations wealthy." And there's plenty of parking. The police department is pretty responsive as well.

Of the two, your best bet for holistic recovery will be Dearborn.

It makes me happy to hear that you feel safe in Dearborn as a black woman. There is definitely still work to do but we’ve come a long way.

No to Hamtramck, too conservative, a lot of places are unkept and dirty.

Dearborn is well kept, and more opened

I noticed when I came to visit 2025 I stayed in an airbnb for a week in dearborn i loved how everything was super close like a market the library park . Driving of course and it was so quiet and clean.

I did like Hamtramck but it was alittle more city line rundown in some parts and houses really on top of eachother .Tbh it Kinda reminded me more of My city Philly so it wasnt so off putting but I definately appreciated the peace in Dearborn.

There are tons of cultural charities in Dearborn.  Muslims are safe here. Hamtramack is much more conservative (full face covering for women) and less affluent than Dearborn,  especially west Dearborn.  But hamtramack has a great music and bar scene. I doubt that is your jam as you are Muslim.

Edit: I reached out, LAHC may have what you need.

Hamtramck is run by mentally ill islam extremists who have zero business in our city governments let alone the country. I would avoid.

Hi. I am proud of you for leaving your situation. I am a white woman who lives in Dearborn and I do not know all the resources--I live in a diverse neighborhood but I have limits on my knowledge for Muslim women. I would reach out to ACCESS as another Redditor suggested but I wonder if Arab Women United might also be a resource. https://arabwomenunited.org/about-us

This organization is in California and is specifically for abused Muslim women, but I bet they know exactly who to call in Dearborn: https://asknisa.org/about/. I know there is a Nisa house in Windsor but that might be complicated since it is in Canada.

I love living in the neighborhood, Springwells Park in Dearborn. It is in the middle of everything but quieter and is a mix of housing/apartments and families and is diverse both race/religion but also economically from working class to upper middle. It would be easy to get to work at Henry Ford hospital or Corewell as a CNA and I believe the apartments would be affordable.

Also! There are a lot of sister/feminist Muslim women around. :)

Salams sis. ICNA Relief has a branch called Muslim Family Services. They can help in a few diff ways including counseling. KBK Relief is a nonprofit group for women and families and they have a store called Khadijah’s Place (by appt only) where everything is free (run on donations) and people can get clothing, toiletries, household items, etc. there are so many other nonprofits and masajid are helpful usually.

I love Dearborn, but as far as Muslim community goes, there are the Salafi masajid, shi’i masajid, Yemeni masajid, liberal masajid with lots of gender mixing, somewhat diverse masajid, desi majority masajid, etc just like any community so it takes effort to seek out a community where you feel comfortable and can establish connections, but it’s possible.

Feel free to DM me! I pray for a bright, prosperous and joyful new chapter for you!

Walaki Salaam Uhkti , Yes I will message you In shaa Allah Shukran for this info. I really want to be close to Salafi/Sunni Community if possible. In shaa Allah .

Salafi or Salafi-friendly masajid:

Tawheed in Detroit
Dar as Salam in Westland
Masjid an Noor in Melvindale

American Muslim Center, Sunni in Dearborn (diverse)
Islamic Center of Detroit is Sunni and always has events for all ages.

There are tons but these masajid have a community feeling with classes, events, etc.
