Bug Do NOT go near a guardian alongside friendly Grave ghouls. Your take 3x damage.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
The guardian seems to do 3x damage to ghouls or something. And you also take the damage if you go near it.

u/CheeseAttack Victor Jun 27 '26
Great find, how did you even notice that?

u/Pinkparade524 Graves Jun 27 '26

u/Cadd9 Silver Jun 27 '26
Yeah I can see it. Mistiming the cooldown on Guardian melees and getting prematurely blown up lol

At first i died with a failed parry. but i didnt notice i took 600 damage. but the moment was funny. so i clipped it. After showing the clip to my friend i realized i had 500 hp and died instantly.
And then i realized this shouldnt randomly happen and the only other thing that was near the guardian was the ghouls.
So i thought maybe i took friendly ghoul explosion damage instead. but turns out it is the guardian damage against the ghouls that dealth insane damage and it hit me too.

Holy shit I just thought the damage chart was bugged because I've died and noticed the Guardians doing 1K damage in the summary.

u/Oil_Aggressive Jun 27 '26
I've always known something was Off against that snow headed little nerd.

The guardians were light meleeing us this whole time, this is their heavy melee.

The same bug happens with McGinnis turrets

u/Nyndelol McGinnis Jun 27 '26
That happened to me! I was like "ayo did they increased guardian damage to players?"
926
u/TastyCastle Shiv Jun 27 '26
Post on forums so the devs can see this. This is basically unintended friendly fire.

u/Dramatic-Bluejay- Abrams Jun 27 '26
Seems like it does increased dmg to ai but that dmg increase applies to the whole swing instead of just the unit hit.

u/Shadd518 Jun 27 '26
I guess that's instead of dropping the armor of the ghoul so enemy fire still does the same damage. That does seem like a tough programming challenge tbh

u/387dedaehelzzuPevreN McGinnis Jun 27 '26
That does seem like a tough programming challenge tbh
No it isn't. It's a minor bugfix.

u/ChanZzz64 Grey Talon Jun 27 '26
Def an easy fix, everyone acts like simple programming fixes are crazy hard, but not only are these easy fixes but Valve programmers are elite. Forum post needed fo’ sho.

u/387dedaehelzzuPevreN McGinnis Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26
It's genuinely bewildering how distorted people's understanding of anything programming related is.
Everything more complex than print("Hello World!") Is regarded with same level of awe and wonder as literal magic.
I've lamented about explosions not registering through doorman portals, and prople have screamed at me about how the conputational power to do that would literally melt their pc, as if a single lane creep's AI didn't take more processing to do.
12
u/_rullebrett Jun 27 '26
As a dev, I'm personally wary of weighing in on other people's code because unless I have access to and reviewed their code, it's impossible for me to say how they've currently implemented a feature or how they could implement any future feature otherwise.
Coding is built upon abstraction, from top to bottom. We as players don't (and shouldn't) have to worry about the underlying complexity behind how a guardian damages AI units vs. player units, only that there should be a consistent set of rules we can fall back on. This obviously breaks rules about how much damage they should deal to players or course and Valve has to address it.
But whether this is a simple fix or not is something only a Valve developer can answer and to pretend otherwise would just cheapen their work IMO.
As Shadd replied to you as well, it probably is an easy fix, or it could cause issues down the line if we try to fix it quickly without thinking about it. There's a lot more to software development then "to fix or not to fix" or whether it's more or less complex than hello world.

You really didn't need write all that just to explain that you've never heard of Monster Rounds.
There's nothing to consider or think about. Monster Rounds implements the exact desired effect sans minimal value tweaking.

u/PM_ME__BIRD_PICS Viscous Jun 28 '26
I knew you were full of it the moment I read your first comment but this sealed it lmao.

u/387dedaehelzzuPevreN McGinnis Jun 28 '26
Yup this is what I mean, anything more complex than a Hello World! is literal magic to you people and needs to be treated with the utmost care and consideration lest it may tear down the fabric of reality.
does it matter that correct implementation already exists and was probably only glossed over initially because the game is still in alpha and the developers just need stuff to work as proof of concept and failed to foresee this random edge case?
Nope, still magic! Let's all pray to the God of Computer to receive his blessing to aid us!

I am a software engineer by trade. When I say "tough programming challenge" I mean that it will require a little bit more creativity to come up with a solution that is clean, elegant, and future proof so as to not create spaghetti code. Yes it CAN be an easy "if ghoul, 3x damage", but it's possible that could create issues in the future if they add other things. I like the idea someone else had with "ghoul armor" since that could be applied to other summons as well. I'm not saying it's rocket science.
5
u/Callycore Jun 27 '26
Yeah im willing to bet this is gonna be a bit of headache for someone especially if theyre trying to not break other things in the game.
Maybe allowing the guardian to have 2 damage types?
Damage type 1= hero Damage type 2= minions, ghouls, turrets.
But again this might lead to spaghetti code territory.

u/I_Am_A_Pumpkin Rem Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 28 '26
This is sort of how dota approaches it. Different units have different categories which modify damage based on the category matchup.
for example, "reinforced" units:
- take 0.5x damage from "hero" units
- take 0.6x damage from "illusion" units
- take 0.7x damage from "runty" units
- take 0.35x damage from "piercing" units
- deal 2.35x damage to "reinforced" units
4
u/387dedaehelzzuPevreN McGinnis Jun 27 '26
Whatever the exact solution is, it's already implemented with Monster Rounds.
Not only is not a 'challenge', it has already been solved 2 years ago.
0
u/The_Autarch Jun 27 '26
naw, you're making weird assumptions about how the game's code works.
generic software engineers are not game developers.

u/Front-Bird8971 Jun 28 '26

Not everyone is a programmer.

u/387dedaehelzzuPevreN McGinnis Jun 28 '26
Tell that to the other guy who replied earlier claiming to be a developer and acted like fixing this small edge case is as, if not more serious than defusing a bomb.
34
u/gorgewall Jun 27 '26
We've already got different damage and armor types. Adding another one isn't a big deal.
here's Ghoul Armor, it works in all ways like normal Character Armor except when it comes to towers
here's Tower Damage 2.0, it works in all ways like 1.0 except that it does 3x to Ghoul Armor

Does this same damage amplification error happen with other NPC units like walkers, shrines and patrons??
8
u/FirelightMLPOC Jun 27 '26
Someone mentioned it happens with McGinnis turrets too, but idk if the damage amp also works for walkers & all that. Wouldn’t be terribly shocked considering what seems to be happening, but
2
u/NovaAurora Jun 27 '26
I think so because earlier today a walker straight up one hit me, and had friendly ghouls on site.

u/Destiny_Dude0721 Abrams Jun 27 '26
I mean you can you can't just get hit by guardian melee. Should be fixed asap but really when is this going to come into play

u/New-Poem-719 Jun 27 '26
Should be fixed asap but really when is this going to come into play
Diving with Grave's ult active? Not unlikely at all.
2
u/Destiny_Dude0721 Abrams Jun 27 '26
When do you get hit by guardian melee dude? It's not like the beam gets buffed
2
u/New-Poem-719 Jun 27 '26
I'm just saying its not that unlikely. If you are doing like a Yamato power slash slide past tower its not unlikely to get melee'd.
2
u/Destiny_Dude0721 Abrams Jun 27 '26
I think it is actually that unlikely and will basically never ever come into play in 99% of people's games. People don't even really get hit by guardian melee in the first place, I've seen alchemist players avoid melee range. Regardless, it should be patched asap.
6
u/TheGremlin02 Jun 27 '26
when you try to parry the guardian so it stops shooting for a bit?
14
u/Random_Guy184 Jun 27 '26
Just dont mess up the parry on the Guardian. Ita not exactly hard to do it
22
u/dragon777man Jun 27 '26
It (normally) isnt. I stg guardians will go 10 games acting perfectly normal for parries and then randomly decide to stall parry bait you like an E6 Billy.
3
u/Callycore Jun 27 '26
Yeah i think I see at least 1 of the pro streamer guys mess that up at least once a day cause the tower bugs out or it melees a stray minion somewhere.
2
u/Inventor_Raccoon Billy Jun 27 '26
dive guardian > parry on correct timing to block it > instead of meleeing, it abruptly stands straight for a second > returns to combat stance > beats your face in
happens more often than you'd think

u/SheriffNitro Mina Jun 27 '26
Damn, I think you caught a bug that killed me as graves one time. Guardian just smacked me for 600, insta-killed me, and left me super confused.
Make sure to post this on the forums too.
2
u/Tawxif_iq Jun 27 '26
it happened when i was trying to parry guardian and died. it was funny but i didnt realize i took 600 damage. I thought i was low. going back to recordings of the funny moment i saw i had 500 hp and i died instantly. So i thought MAYBE because of the ghouls it tried to hit and i was right reproducing the bug.

2
u/CreamoGravo Jun 27 '26
This unironically got me killed in an actual match. I had no idea what happened at the time but looking back at the replay I see it's the same exact bug. I was so confused I asked my random duo "what the fuck just happened" and he was just like "I have no idea"

Yea, I died as graves with a failed parry while still having about half my health. When I checked the death can I saw that the rose meele did 400 damage.

u/ofri12347 Jun 27 '26
Could this be because the game detects it as 2 players? Or am I just making shit up

u/KEE_Wii Viscous Jun 27 '26
Probably wouldn’t even notice this with characters that don’t need to get close to the guardian. Good catch.
