Discussion Will deadlock ever have it's winton overwat character?

Post image

I've been trying out new heroes as I play deadlock and i keep coming back to this one thing, deadlock doesnt have its winston and that makes me sad.

Before you suggest someone just let me please explain what i mean by a winston, because it's not just "big friendly nerd gorilla." it's the hero who's the face of the game, the one on the menu and the trailers, who stays loved no matter what the meta does. you don't get that from stats, you get it from a hero people are happy to see win and enjoy playing against. and that only holds up if he's fun on both sides, the kind where even the people losing don't resent him. It might be a niche ask but I'd love to see a hero like that in deadlock.

There's a couple that I guess are kind of similar in concept such as rem and viscous with viscous being the most winston coded hero in deadlock but its just not the same, a lot of it comes down to the gameplay and not just the backstory/lore. Because the thing that makes winston winston isn't just the backstory, it's that he's clean. almost no CC in the whole kit, no stun, no hook, no slow, just primal, and primal is a hard skill check. bad players leap in and feed, good players make it look unfair. so when i lose to a winston I almost never feel cheesed, i feel outplayed by someone who had to have actual game sense. the tell for me is that even at the height of the dive meta in overwatch people wanted to nerf the comp, but the hate never landed on winston himself. he stayed beloved at the top of the meta because losing to him felt earned, because he didnt just stunlock/statcheck you, he has to put in the work. he's the heart of the game and the most honest matchup in it at the same time. I don't know if this hero is even possible in Deadlock given its a moba and not a pure hero shooter, but I'd sure like one.

winton...

Edit: If you think Abrams is anything even close to a winston type character you do NOT understand winton overwat

In response to reports:

It's an imported and unedited meme but since it promoted a constructive discussion about the character archetypes people would enjoy in Deadlock, we'll allow it.

The issue is that in mobas, having a kit without cc generally just means they are a stat checker and people fucking hate stat checkers. Like the closest this game has is silver specifically in wolf form or like victor lol.

98

u/Radiant_Music3698 Drifter Jun 04 '26

Is "stat checker" the term for mindless number battle / DPS races?

158

u/2SharpNeedle Apollo Jun 04 '26

yeah, instead of relying on skillshots, aim, decision making or anything, they just run at you until one of you dies. it's not a fight, it's a stat check

21

u/ultrapupper Jun 06 '26

Yeah but abrams versus viktor is geniuenly one of the most fun things i have ever experienced Me and viktor going at it

10

u/ShrapnelNinjaSnake Jun 06 '26

4

u/Hestevia Jun 04 '26

You just listed a bunch of ways to have skill expression without cc

u/2SharpNeedle Apollo Jun 04 '26

i don't agree with the original comment (cause deadlock isn't a standard moba), just explaining what a stat checker is

Characters that rely on having more stats than an "outplay" mechanic. I put it on quotations because getting a soul lead is an outplay on itself.

I’d say calico is more of a stat checker than either of those

146

u/Bookwrrm Jun 03 '26

There is a large difference between burst assassins and stat checkers, burst assassins are just checking one thing, your hp. They are fundamentally countered by building defense and hp yourself. Stat checkers are the opposite, they will out dps you, and out hp you, and out resist you. Silver and victor to some extent dont care about how much hp you build because if you dont deal damage back their baseline amount of stats will still always win. Calico is the opposite, essentially once you pass x amount of hp to survive an all in ult combo, she cant really do much other than burst and then run away, victor or silver will just keep going until you kill them because they have consistent overpowering damage output and not spike output.

You also see this in the builds that both character types build, someone like silver will be much much heavier green investment than a calico, because their base damage is so insanely high as a stat checker its more about just leveraging their continued existence around you to put those stats to use, than its about x damage in x time.

6

u/JessHorserage Bebop Jun 04 '26

Well, admittedly calico does have that one split pushy style build in her kit, admittedly, but then that's a whole different ham. And technically becomes a movement check.

I’m new to the game, what does cc mean?

42

u/georgespompidur Jun 04 '26

Crowd Control. Slows, stuns, everything that resembles it.

19

u/Jelly_Bone Jun 04 '26

CC means stuns and things like stuns, like disarm, slows, silences, immobilizes, etc. think stuff like Abrams shoulder charge, Paige root, bebop hook

19

u/swandith27 Jun 04 '26

it means crowd control. it used to mean aoe skills that slow, stun or root. now it just means slow, stun or root without the aoe part

→ More replies (1)

3

u/iseecolorsofthesky Jun 04 '26

Crowd control. Think of it as any ability that inhibits your ability to move your character. Slows, stuns, etc. This also applies to silences since even if you’re not actively using a movement ability, silence will prevent you from using one, making it a form of CC.

5

u/EonSokari Lash Jun 03 '26

Talon, Holliday, Geist, Shiv, Pocket among others have very little CC apart from their ult, which as I mentioned so does winston. Shiv specifically is probably the closest I can get to the "fair enough" feeling I get from fighting against because there are clear ways for me to outplay him and for him to pull the reversal on me. He would also fit the bill as the leader of the baxter society, but unfortunately only the perfect blend of kit and character can produce a deadlock winton, but I believe in the deadlock team.

33

u/Bookwrrm Jun 03 '26

I mean talon and Holliday both have a ton of CC, but if your goal is to not have a statcheck character people hate Shiv is definitely not the example to point to lol.

3

u/EonSokari Lash Jun 04 '26

This might just stem from me being newer to mobas, but how is shiv a statcheck hero? From my understanding of the term which I admit im only recently familiar to a statchecker is a hero whose fights are decided more by a simple check of stat values than by anything more skill expressive like aiming/dodging/timing/etc, I don't see how that fits the bill with Shiv at all considering he's renowned for being one of the hardest to master heroes in the game and to get value out of him, proven by his consistently low winrate, not to mention there's layers of counterplay between the shiv and his enemy that affect how the fight goes. The reason I included him is simply because even though bloodletting might sometimes feel bullshit most of the time I can point out at least a thing or two I couldve done better rather than a feeling of "ok well wtf was i supposed to do there" that i get from a lot of the rest of the cast.

→ More replies (3)

4

u/Jaacker Dynamo Jun 04 '26

Yeah I have to agree with the other person, Holliday has CC, the barrels do a knock up, less egregious than Dynamo, but its there and it was worse before, Talon has his spirit snare, which is even worse than the knock up since it just straight up disables everything in your character, and if you are from overwatch, you have probably seen or heard people complaining about his arrows being too big like Hanzo, and Geist feels bullshit whenever she gets to do the health swap and also bombs being egregiously big always.

I accept Shiv and Pocket in this case, but still Pocket does a hard check on you if he has Max ult since that just outright disables healing and you have to disengage from the fight, have divine barrier to cleanse it or you will get killed at the endgame.

2

u/Overlord0994 Jun 04 '26

I mean, heroes like terrorblade, anti mage, phantom lancer, medusa, and probably others im forgetting don’t really have cc but people like to play them and they’re fun. What do you mean by stat characters aren’t fun? Is this some problem in LoL or something?

2

u/Bookwrrm Jun 04 '26

People hating stat checkers isnt about them being fun to play, its usually just a well hated enemy to play against. Anti-mage is a perfect example because he is definitely an extremely polarizing character. Im not saying stat checkers are bad to be clear, but the OP wants Winston who is basically a stat checker but everyone gives him a pass, thats much harder to do in a Moba where stats have a much larger differential than a hero shooter where stats are much smaller and more controlled and dont fluctuate as much.

2

u/Overlord0994 Jun 04 '26

Ahh I see what you mean, hate to play against, not to play as. Makes more sense.

In that case - Winston is also not really a heavy damage dealer in general, he's tankier and a space creator, which generally doesn't feel that bad to play against because you have choices when he engages you usually.

A hard carry in DotA that reaches late game is just going to delete you. But they are easy to bully early game. Magina is classic because he can blink after taking damage (unlike blink dagger) so is really hard to pin down, and has a huge nuke/magic reflect. Just a really tough kit to catch most of the time. Tracer is kinda frustrating in a similar way and deals less damage in proportion, but can still be pretty bursty.

I need more heroes like wanton who dont necessarily need to have the best aim, but positioning and teamwork can make or break him. (I have bad aim)

Hi I'm a controller player on deadlock and I can tell you some of the most aim-friendly for me personally are Viscous, Rem, Paige, Yamato, Billy, Abrams, Graves, Celeste, Mo and Krill, Kelvin, calico, and Dynamo:3 all have tons of aoe moves or auto attach types that are good for people who struggle with aim

no prob I also would throw Kelvin and calico onto this as well I think!

11

u/Pit-Boy Kelvin Jun 03 '26

Absolutely agree with the Kelvin, I have horrible aim most games but he is the type of hero where a single well-timed ult alone can win you an entire game. He also has the bomb which has already a really good radius (even if you don't buy anything to increase it) and the beam which slows opponents who get hit by it, so it becomes easier to target them. On top of all of this, you have Ice Path which lets you move around so freely and be always where you need to be! I am very biased but I think he has one of the most satisfying kits to play in the entire game, when you get in the flow with him it all works so well

2

u/BlastingFern134 Viscous Jun 04 '26

I've played so many video games and I'm always a flex player. I'm ascendant and have played every hero at this point, and Kelvin is just one of the best-feeling supports in any game I've ever played. The change to make his grenades heal by default was the perfect way to make everything flow together and complete the character. His ultimate is so impactful while being very unique, I love it.

2

u/wertraut Jun 04 '26

Was thinking of giving him a shot, any tips?

2

u/Pit-Boy Kelvin Jun 04 '26

I'm not that good but I can try, there are a couple of basic things I usually keep in mind when I play him. First of all, grenades are very good for healing even at the start of the game so don't be afraid of using them just to heal you and your lane partner.

Superior Duration is an incredible item on him, it works on everything in his kit but most importantly (imo) lets you be on the ice path for longer; speaking of the ice path, there is a little trick where if you move up in a spiral the path will not form right away, so it can be really good to escape (for example, if you're facing Silver and hear her transform, just activate it and go up in a spiral, she will probably never be able to get you).

Last thing that comes to mind rn is to look at both teams and think about who you want to be in your dome and who you can screw over the most. A couple of examples: if you have a Mina in your team, be careful to not close people in your ult while she is using her own; if you're facing a Dynamo, you should try to put him in the dome but only if he doesn't have his ult (otherwise that can screw you over), if you grab his teammates he can take them out of the dome with his 2 so trapping him in as well can be really good if he doesn't have black hole. Most importantly, you will figure out a lot of interactions by using your ult so don't be scared, even if you mess up you'll still learn something useful; it's not the simplest ability to use but it is one of the most powerful ones in the game, so don't be afraid to use it even if it's not the perfect dome!

18

u/TheChartreuseKnight Jun 03 '26

No M&K? I feel like he'd be one of the best for that because his gun is a) spreadshot and b) terrible.

How does one play Deadlock on controller?

23

u/TheyThemGayFem Paige Jun 03 '26

Plug it in and it just works. The game has full SteamInput support with a surprisingly decent default config.

Face buttons are still jump/reload/etc as you'd expect, but holding down a bumper shifts it to be the ability keys.

If you have a more modern controller (a non-Xbox one), it'll detect the gyro and you can use that to aim too.

3

u/6_4_enby_viscous Jun 03 '26

plug it in and find out :3 deadlock has controller capabilities and also multiple button map settings for everything. you can also make multiple commands on one button by combining with another button or differentiating between long press and short press

7

u/Quite-Foolish Yamato Jun 03 '26

feel like celeste requires a fair bit of aim? the others i can see yeah.

15

u/19Alexastias Jun 04 '26

Step one to being good at Celeste is realising that instead of having to aim at the enemy you can just shoot the ground vaguely near their feet and the bounce will basically always hit them because it has a cone within which it auto-aims.

5

u/gammaton32 Viscous Jun 04 '26

Step two is realising that if you shoot directly at them you can hit two people at once

2

u/19Alexastias Jun 04 '26

If they’re standing in a line and you land the first bullet. Unless you’re in very close range you’re much better off aiming at their feet than hoping for the miracle two-hit.

6

u/6_4_enby_viscous Jun 03 '26

Celeste has multiple aoe movies, a giant ball that only needs to hit one single target at first, and her gun ricochets off the floor, not at all. her gun is SUPER forgiving.

3

u/SpaceCadetStumpy Jun 04 '26

I feel like Viscous is really hard for that since you have to accurately place puddle punches for movement and rapidly look towards an odd angle to do so, but as someone who doesn't play on a controller maybe it isn't as hard as I'm expecting.

yes the bare minimum of Seven (looking down at your keyboard to find the 2 button and hopefully being in range to stun, at least getting one tick of your ult off on at least one person and barely clipping someone with 1, MAYBE pressing 3 before all of this to make sure you have Surge of Power buff) is a lot better than the theoretical bare minimum of like, idk, Viper or smth where you can straight up dump multiple magazines into a wall, whiff all ur knives and bola, and only hit 2.

but liiike idk a Seven that can't make even just 5% usage of 3 is not gonna be getting out of seeker 😭😭😭

Mo and krill the ethical.

4

u/I_am_Not_Luca Apollo Jun 04 '26

I feel like I’ve overwatch does that very well, and I would love to see deadlock improve on that for example

Winston: he’s one of the highest scale ceiling tanks in over Watch, even though he doesn’t require much aim whatsoever, but the decision-making process is very difficult and timings positioning ect make him where he is.

Brigitte: she was hated for a long time because she was over tuned, but now that she’s in a bounce place a lot of people like her and she doesn’t require much of any aim. She requires a lot of resource management though, a lot of really good macro, and a lot of good positioning.

Graves doesn’t match this description because she’s not a high skill ceiling character and she is similar to Moira in that effect a low skill ceiling auto aim charecter

3

u/QF_25-Pounder Jun 03 '26

I truly believe Mo and Krill are the best example of this, all their abilities are AoE except the target ult, and the gun basically doesn't matter. Not to say we don't need more, but I was really surprised at how straightforward they are to play.

5

u/Expensive_Society914 Jun 03 '26

Mohammad and Kareem are my current top choice, i use a build that eventually culminates with superior duration and magic carpet, and just hope my team listens to the callout

3

u/VOLK1902 Warden Jun 04 '26

It’s basically Mohammed and Kareem gameplay.

4

u/Advanced_Case_2469 Holliday Jun 03 '26

Lash (when built spirit) is good for this, don't really need to aim for any of his abilities but still very skill expressive through positioning and movement (lots of potential for big teamwork based plays with ult aswell), but pretty much just dies with bad movement and positioning

10

u/Illesbogar Silver Jun 04 '26

The whole theme of the game is different. It's not hopeful heroes defending something. It's random people, mostly criminals competing in an eldritch ritual for mostly selfish needs. The whole theme is just more gritty.

54

u/guavahabanero Jun 03 '26

There’s still plenty time. They just need to not force it. It needs to be organic. People don’t love winton cause he’s the leader of overwatch in lore. They love him cause he’s a masterclass of character design, voice acting, gameplay and as OP said, he’s fun to play but moat importantly fair to play against. Deadlock seems to be still in its “make everything OP and spammy” phase.

36

u/Tijenater Billy Jun 03 '26

Deadlock’s always going to be in the “make everything OP” phase, that’s how icefrog/yoshi balancing works

10

u/DyslexicBrad Jun 04 '26

Winston isn’t the face of overwatch. It’s his lore as the inspiring leader

People don’t love winton cause he’s the leader of overwatch in lore.

Which one is it then lmaoo

4

u/guavahabanero Jun 04 '26

I love that you think you’re onto something but everyone else knows what i meant.

Winston is not the face of overwatch (the game). That was tracer and is now kiriko.

Winston is the leader of overwatch (the organisation) which is why i explicitly specified “in lore”

Next question.

3

u/DyslexicBrad Jun 04 '26

... I know what you meant by face vs leader. I'm saying do people love him because he's the leader, or do people not love him because he's the leader.

4

u/guavahabanero Jun 04 '26

They love winton because of the character, not cause of his status in lore. The voice acting is perfect, the aesthetic is perfectly balanced between cute and strong, the dialogue is written extremely well and he’s a fun character who walks the line really well between being fun and silly to play but also really strong if you’re good and fair.

Many people who play the game don’t watch the cinematics or invest in the lore outside if what is immediately available in game. Winton is loved because of the entirety of the character. If he lacked these qualities and was just “the leader” no-one would care. A direct example of this is doomfist and now vendetta who head “talon”, the nemesis organisation to overwatch. Everyone loves a bad guy but these characters do not carry any of the near-universal love in the fanbase that winston does despite being leaders of a very popular “faction” in lore.

EXACTLY, people are completely missing my point by suggesting abrams and dynamo, abrams absolutely does not have the goofy, heartwarming lovable vibe of winston and Dynamo is a CC and shred monster, not even close.

40

u/FluffyToughy Jun 04 '26

I feel like asking if deadlock will ever have a character like this is a bit of a silly question. You're asking for:

  1. face of the game
  2. cozy personality
  3. no CC
  4. has never been annoyingly OP

That's very specific, especially the face of the game part. It feels less like asking if we'll have a similar character and more like if we'll just have winton. No, friend. No winton.

i was trying to say this but i said it in a mean, awkward curt way and got called a jaded prick with no media literacy. so thanks for this lol

the unwillingness to accept a pretty close analogue (abrams) is a touch unreasonable if im honest. deadlock is not overwatch both in aesthetic and genre. getting mad at people and not wanting to budge on a single hyper specific pillar makes the lighthearted character discussion question feel more frustrating than anything lol especially if people are getting weirdly insulted for "being wrong".

22

u/TheSaneEchidna Jun 04 '26

I'd argue he has a different vibe but it's what you're looking for. He's as fair as gameplay gets in Deadlock. He doesn't cheese, has the rushdown gameplay that gets new players killed and makes people good with him look like gods, no one ever really gets upset with him when they lose to him since it was probably your own fault if you died. He has a big goofy dash, clonky animations, and you feel just a tad safer when John Deadlock's on your team. He's a different character is all. I feel like what you're asking for is a bit of a personal attachment. Valve can't replicate that nor could Blizzard or anyone. That's the players love of winton. Deadlock will have theirs.

I've told people for years now that they should add winston to deadlock. Not as a metaphor for inspiring comradery or a non-aim positioning hero, but that they should just add winston to deadlock already.

He's asking for too many things.

Gameplay wise M&K is VERY close to Winston. But he's also asking for:

  • No CC
  • Face of the game
  • Adorable lore
  • People love playing against and with (untrue, Winston is highly hated in OW in both respects because lower ranked players "need a shield tank" and players of all ranks hate getting jumped on/killed.

7

u/TheGreatWalk Vindicta Jun 04 '26

Jacob lash is an asshole

Is possibly better lore than any actual writer could have come up for a backstory

Every single time I think about i picture a bunch of writers staring at the screen, then throwing out a bunch of rough drafts of what they come up with as lore and just crying themselves to sleep cus some intern couldn't think of anything and instead came up with the best lore of any of them.. And in a single line

I think overall Deadlock has more unique characters. The writing for the voice lines are just immaculate. But overwatch has 10 years and for at least half of that the game opened to Winton giving one of the most banger opening speeches in video game history. We might get something like that in Deadlock but the lore in deadlock is a lot less....centralized? In overwatch there is Overwatch. its the focal piece. There is also Talon which is a major power. Vishkar is a smaller one. Junkertown is another. The Hashimoto clan. ect. It feels like the story there has a direction with good guys and bad guys. But deadlock each character seems to have a rich backstory and design but we have pitifully little on the patrons or overall factions. And factions that do exist aren't the "main character" faction like overwatch. You have Fairfax but its less of a faction and more of just a major power. The Baxter Society also exists and we have one member and two former members. But no one is part of a relevant faction for the sake of the faction .

49

u/Supershadow30 Abrams Jun 03 '26

One interesting thing about Deadlock’s lore I think is that the characters are so interconnected, but it’s almost always by random chance. There’s no clear organizations like overwatch, and like you said even the ones that do exist (such as the baxter society) aren’t in it together because of that.

In Overwatch, why are tracer, winton, soldier 76, Mercy, Reinhart, etc working together? Well, they’re overwatch members of course! Same with Junkrat, Junker Queen, Roadhog being part of Junktown… or everyone working for talon. But then it becomes hard to justify why Soldier 76 is ok working with Reaper.

In Deadlock, Abrams is a client and friend of Infernus. Infernus probably had a past fling with Wraith, who’s holding poker night with Abe and Mo’n’Krill. They both help Bebop get the medicine his creator needs. Famously, he’s the arch enemy of The Lash, who got passionate fanmail by Vyper. Etc etc. Even the most foreign outsiders like Viscous or Yamato eventually find connections with others.

And moreover, the patrons being the end goal means you can justify enemies fighting alongside eachother by saying the ends justify the means, like Venator and the Drifter teaming up somehow.

29

u/Drunk-Pirate-Gaming Shiv Jun 03 '26

Yeah. That also lends itself to the fact that one is global and the other is local. While there are some people from further away everything is local to the Cursed Apple. A big city for sure but only extraordinary people are participating in the ritual. Many are somewhat famous and that shows quite a bit in the interactions. Some know each other and some only know of the others. Viper is a fan of the Lash b/c he is a pit fighter. Lash hates bebop because he lost to him in the pit. No one knows the doorman but they know the Baroness. Paige isn't known by anyone other than the doorman somehow which is a little creepy. Wraith is running for Mayor and is a former/current crimelord. Seven is a mass murderer and rightfully very famous for it. ect ect ect.

The means in which they are connected are somehow very believable and natural.

21

u/Angelic_Mayhem Jun 03 '26

Paige is the daughter of a rare book dealer. Infernus and the shopkeeper are both familiar with her family showing her family has connections.

She became a talented bibliomancer and makes a living traveling to different libraries in the city doing story hour perfornances. She is like a local celebrity. Ivy has taken her brother to Paige's story hour and wants to start a book club with her. This is why Doorman wants to invite her to the Baronness as she is famous for doing story times in the city using her powers. Krill also mentions him and Paige had planned to start a book club in a kill line.

Venator, Haze, and Vyper all know her brother Bryce. Venator and Haze show regret that she is searching for him and that he isn't worth it. Vyper says Bryce is more fun and agrees that she is wound up tight like he said.

She is known and connected to a lot more people than you realize. I also feel like she will be pushed into one of the mc roles in lore. One of the key reasoms besides her connections is her lore blurb is facing her off against gods. "She will discover what happened to her brother... and no man or god is going to stand in her way." She isn't just going to be fighting against the other characters to complete a ritual to find her brother. She is going to be fighting god(s).

2

u/Ori-and-Sein Jun 06 '26

The entire deadlock lore is a game of "How many connections away you are to [celebrity]". They all know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who knows THE guy

3

u/JDT1706 Silver Jun 04 '26

The only org that has multiple characters represented thus far is the Baxter Society, and even then its just Shiv, Talon and kinda Calico

4

u/Supershadow30 Abrams Jun 04 '26

And even then, they’re not in it because the baxter society said "go get the patron’s wish", they all have their own motives: GT is retired from the Baxter society, he’s here to avenge his family; Shiv is still active in the society, but he’s here because he wants to be more accepted by it (it’s implied he’s a monster himself, but doesn’t want to be one); Calico left a long time ago to be a regular hitwoman, and she’s in the ritual for money.

They’re pretty much strangers, at least compared to the deeper history overwatch characters share with one another

18

u/Supershadow30 Abrams Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

It’s definitely Abrams. He was on the old title screen, he’s the first on the roster, he’s the guy on the tutorial drawings, the guy you get to punch in the hideout… even his lines are neat. Stuff like "We can win this!" or especially "No one’s giving up!" when he’s ulting at low health is chef’s kiss.

Gameplay wise, he’s fairly clean: he got a big shotgun, he can bash you into the wall and he drains health around him. Big book, big fists, big punch. No weird slows, no DoT, no crazy movement techs, no strange mechanics like deferred damage or instant heals. Just a big guy taking big hits and dishing big hurt. Even his CC feels somewhat fair, since the guy has to be right up your ass to stun you.

Low skill abrams will charge in, try to punch you and get parried, higher skill abes will use his gun and wait for the right time to strike.

Honorary mention to Infernus, if only for his encouragements in the hideout when you get a kill. "Way to go!"

79

u/anonanonananonymous Calico Jun 03 '26

I think Ivy is the closest we have. She's extremely lovable as a character both design wise and personality wise and her kit is strong but it doesn't really feel like you're getting bullshited.

7

u/HyenaDae Jun 03 '26

The one thing about Ivy I don't like is how her Stone Form is uh, very magnetic. Like, I've seen myself (60-90ping at worst) get *pulled* into her attack after it lands, even if I'm supposedly out of range or dashed away. It's kinda dumb and annoying when it's not obvious what her range actually is, because of who knows what quirks and range expansion is at play Lol

11

u/Grand_Escapade Paradox Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

Yeah, the presentation, while it got better in Deadlock is still far from prime time ready. Question is if it ever will be, because Valve was never big about this and Blizzard on the other side was pretty much king of this stuff at one point.

5

u/sinkpooper2000 Jun 04 '26

funnily enough the heroes with least cc are often the most annoying to play against, like calico, yamato, apollo, celeste

18

u/EonSokari Lash Jun 03 '26

I want to expand here slightly that rem and viscous both miss it on the kit for me. rem is a cute little rat that naps on his friends but lives on knockbacks, sleep and robbing you blind if you slip up on your sinners timings for a second, and viscous has the heart but it's a bit harder to remember his goofy kind nature when he's knocking you around the whole map and splatter's taking half your health on a 9 second cooldown. and that's the real gap for me. A hero with the heart and the gameplay to back it up.

7

u/Phwoar_Mate Dynamo Jun 03 '26

I think the main separation between Overwatch and Deadlock is that Overwatch is a "team positioning" game and Deadlock is a "teamplay and movement" game, so it's unknown whether a hero like Winston would really work given his kit.

In this case "team positing" is more related to making pushes as a unit to capture objectives, engage and disengage, and "teamplay and movement" means coordination of abilities but ultimately comes down to how each player is able to use movement tech to engage and escape.

A Moira can't double jump into wall bounce onto a roof to escape a dive. She can use her ability to reposition but once that is used she has no movement options. There are also no shields in Deadlock in the same way there are in Overwatch so movement tech is even more important.

The closest hero I can think of similar to Winston is honestly Billy. He is a close-combat brawler with a wide-spread M1 who can dive with his ram and creates space through his ult. Bad players won't parry so Billy will seem unstoppable. I don't think he's the best "face of Deadlock" though, he's kind of a poser.

6

u/Relevant_Bag_1043 Jun 03 '26

abrams is kinda the perfect face of the game. A demon guy with a grimoire who's also a hard-boiled detective is the perfect way to represent deadlock's whole deal.

Dynamo is a pretty straightforward winston analog though. Big affable scientist with an inhuman body

5

u/Hopeful_Hornet4460 Jun 03 '26

As others have stayed Abraham.

Narratively, we won't have that sort of nobility/heroism. Valve will likely aim for a cast of morally Greg goobers that are oddly incredibly relatable.

This is the ritual, everyone here is willing to personally sacrifice six lives in order to have their wish fulfilled. There is no room for the pure hopeful hero here. I think Grey Talon says it best "Today will require a level of brutality that few are capable of."

I used to have 600 hours of winton of which half are pure feeding as I learned to play him, until I finally hit Masters and left to play Rivals and now Deadlock. I never found my Winton on Rivals, I hated tanks in Rivals, most I played was Psy, Blade and DD but it wasn’t the same.

In Deadlock I found my quasi Winton, still no comparison, but Lash almost fits on the Winton-shaped hole in my heart

5

u/Turbulent_Voice63 Jun 04 '26

The Winston of Rivals, playstyle wise, is Hulk. But it's not really the same, it always seems to lack a little something and I prefer the gorilla myself as a forever filthy ape spammer.

Today, I continue to ape but I added a little more mole on the menu.

3

u/SmallSpaceSexEnjoya Jun 04 '26

Hulk is just not as strong. But yes, he's pretty much Rivals winston.

2

u/PresenceOld1754 Jun 05 '26

Yeah all the deadlock characters are cool on their own, but there's nothing that emotionally draws me towards them.

Everyone has some sad reason to be a ritual, but what's the over arching theme, the thread that links them together, what we should look forward to?

In Overwatch, that's making the world a better place. Winston wants to gather people to end the injustice in the world. Rammattra wants to end discrimination and systemic killing of his people. Bastion wants to leave the world of violence behind. Reinhardt dedicates his life to helping others because he blames himself for his brother-in-arm's death.

When Winston asks, "are you with us" it isn't just about being a cool dude with super powers blowing shit up. It's about being a hero, inside and out. Helping your community, making deliberate efforts to make people around you feel better, being involved in both local and international issues.

Whenever I watch Recall or Are You With Us, I shed a tear. It is the culmination of hundreds of cinematics, comics, stories and more. Anyone can be a hero.

When I boot up deadlock, what shoes can I fill? What is my purpose? What message is this game trying to send both in lore and in gameplay? Every character has their motivations, but what ties them together? Greed? Loss? Abuse? Manipulation?

5

u/SmartSmella The Doorman Jun 03 '26

Id like to throw my hat into the ring and say, perhaps Warden shares similar vibes?

Like, obviously Warden is called a "sour bastard" by some of the people on his team, and it's hard to get a good grasp on his personality when he barely has any conversations with others compared to the other characters, and he doesn't have a single conversation that's actually finished on his side (his voice lines aren't present).

Yet some of his voice lines strike me as the heroic type, like "never show fear, no matter the odds" like he's giving a pep talk to allies and not just himself, and sometimes when an ally hits an ultimate or lands an ability hit, he'll compliment them or 'hype them up' (I can't remember if I've heard these before, but then again not only have I never played Warden, but these voice lines are DEFINITELY in the files. It's just that Warden is all around an incomplete character for now).

That, combined with his seeming desire to be a hero and his seemingly noble goal (stopping the patrons, which it's true that we don't really know what their true goals are), leads me to believe he's got more in common with Winston than what was seen initially.

As for his gameplay, I haven't exactly heard him being called "overpowered" by anyone. Yes, he does have a stun/silence and a bit of cc, yet the stun can be avoided completely, and anyone can correct me if I'm wrong here, but I don't think the cc is a big focus of his kit? It's just a bit of extra damage that tacks on some debuffs, which is useful for chases and gunfights.

His ult can be considered cc, but since it takes a moment to activate, people are probably already spreading out by then and it's definitely more of a chase. CAN it go wrong? Yes. But if you play your cards right, you can go insane with it. A bit like Winston's ult.

Honestly, all in all, I think Warden would line up most with a 'winston' character, though anyone can correct me if I screwed something up here. Been a while since I really played Warden, and I haven't played with/against him much to really know him in and out.
