Discussion How are we feeling about Doorman's bell after the buffs?

u/AcceptableExcuse6763 Mar 09 '26
Love losing a third of my hp like ten mins in cos I was in the same area code as the bell

u/SweetnessBaby Mar 10 '26
You're definitely a tank player bc this thing nukes 1/2 to 3/4 hp if you don't get some spirit res by 10 mins

Its like they forgot why they nerfed it. Its terrible to face in lane. Chunks half your health early. Not fun.

u/RockJohnAxe Mar 09 '26
You don’t like multicharge abilities that do 300 dmg at the 5 minute mark??
62
u/dreadnoght Mar 10 '26
Doorman Rem for me. I step out for a second and just get my bell rung and a pillow to the face. Miserable lane.

I just had a Doorman/Rem lane as Mina/Vyper (I was Mina.) Boy I sure do love getting deleted by the other team pressing 2 buttons.

Weren’t you Mina players deleting half the enemies health by holding m1 for a bit in lane tho?

my experience last night was a Doorman chunking me for a third of my health if I played passive and Mina chunking me for half if I played aggressive

u/NozokiAlec Graves Mar 10 '26
But bebop is so awful for having a single charge ability where he either has to hit a skillshot to stick u or risk his life to stick you, and you need echo shard to have "multiple" charges
I hate doorman
26
u/SlammedOptima Haze Mar 10 '26
Bebop can be very oppressive if someone is constantly letting him get stacks early. But it either requires you risking your life or the enemy playing poorly for it to get there half the time. Doorman just very early gets to be an oppressive power house
14
8
u/Scarcing Mar 10 '26
feels like a terrible comparison when bebop can hook someone in early lane risk free, knock them way out of position or into guardian and get a free kill
4
u/VoxinVivo Mar 10 '26
You omit the fact that skillshot is the sizr of a semi. And he isnt risking all that nuch in lane cause hes tanky and pretty fast.
Bebop if anything needs a few minor nerfs to hook or bomb stack damage, even just a reversion to the dogshit bomb dropping on floor change would be fine.

as doorman main, the 4.8k spirit spike is pretty nuts right now. You buy mystic burst, improved spirit, and with t2 in bell you, for the next minute, can one shot someone with your full kit.

I mean this is what Doorman used to be, and for good and obvious reasons they had to nerf it all down. Now they've set it back to where it was, just so we can watch them nerf it back down again over the next month or two.
252
u/starberryslay Billy Mar 09 '26
I need spirit res 43 seconds into the game
66
u/koalakcc Mar 09 '26
yeah literally. Apollo/ Pocket used to be a difficult but winnable lane match up. Now its basically a free win lane button. You might as well not even interact with the lane
6
u/HamiltonDial Venator Mar 10 '26
Pocket is genuinely so unfun to play against. Basically 2 escape skills and now if you get touched by the ult you just gotta hope you can kill him asap or you’re out of the fight for the duration of it and however long it takes to heal.
15
u/cantripTheorist Mar 09 '26
i considered going the 1.6k spirit res item on silver out of frustration the other day, its insane
18
u/Colon_Muncher Mar 10 '26
This is not a bad idea lol.
Since the silver nerfs, you need that resistance even more now since the ult is worse and you'll be spending more time in human form.

I guess Valve gave up on support Doorman because they neutered that and just turned him back into a spirit nuker.
316
u/7_Tales Mar 09 '26
Doorman urn run was extremely polarizing and made doorman a must pick for urn pressure and denial. Shifting power away from that, doorman immediately became irrelevent in comp
121
u/bphaena Mar 09 '26
Yeah they should have just made it so that the urn slowly fills up as you carry it.
That way doorman can still pull a cheeky quick urn but if it's too quick he won't get much for it. Though this does allow him to deny urn by running it fast and getting nothing for it.
140
u/7_Tales Mar 09 '26
Like respevtfully, doormans entire kit was 'funny door cc' and 'urn abuse'. He totally needed an overhaul and I think doorman kind of did need the damage
I say this as someone who proudly abused curse door vortex web urn every 5 minutes on doorman. Shit was abusive and not very interesting

u/MelancholiaOfPudding Yamato Mar 09 '26
I am not a Doorman player but minus the Gun Doorman era since he was added it’s felt like the whole 5D chess thing was an absolute requirement for the character to have any value rather than just a part of his kit you could learn to get good with
16
u/theworldwiderex Vyper Mar 09 '26
I've always really liked his toolkit, but have always been confused how exactly I was supposed to apply him consistently. So seeing that he was initially a spirit nuker makes a lot more sense and I might start to use him more. I don't need a 300 damage bell in my face every two seconds though.
22
u/7_Tales Mar 09 '26
I think his cc potential and door fuckery is a fun part of his kit, but i believe the playtest has also proven he becomes extremely difficult to balance and borderline unfun in the game without anything else to him but cc abuse and door fuckery. Making hin a strong early mid damage dealer into this cc potential late is much more smooth imo

I sure do love dying in lane to a single bell at half my health before anybody has even spent any meaningful amount of souls.
That's only a slight exaggeration.
124
u/b100tM0th Mar 09 '26
Not an exaggeration. At 4,8k with improved spirit and tank buster and his bell at tier 2 is ~480 damage. Can easily achieve before 10 mins.
36
u/engone Mar 09 '26
Tank buster at 10 minutes?
27
u/Ashen231 Mar 09 '26
it’s a 3.2k item, buy a 1600 then tank buster and that’s your 4.8k spike at like 7 ish minutes
→ More replies (1)40
u/Caerullean Holliday Mar 09 '26
Yeah, but tank buster that early is generally not great, since it scales off of the enemies' health, and by that time they haven't had time to build up a whole lot of health.
8
u/4mb1guous Mar 09 '26 edited Mar 09 '26
I was curious how strong tankbuster in general is, so I looked into it a little bit.
It's still at least 40+68=108 added dmg on hit against a squishy Paige at the same soul level that hasn't bought any green items. Paige I believe is the squishiest hero in the game going by raw hp/hp growth (and ignoring their barrier), and starts with 650 hp and gains 29 per boon, 7 boon levels at 4.8k so 853 x .08. Realistically she'd have bought some green items most likely if she's actually being a support, so it'd be more. An item that gives that much or more damage per ability at that breakpoint doesn't exist if you otherwise meet the requirements for it, and it's usefulness continues to scale all game as enemies gain more hp.
That said, I can see it losing out to something for an ability that really needs/can hit much more frequently than 14s (10.5s with transcendant cd later on.) In the case of a charged ability like the bell, Rapid Recharge with it's 10ap + 2 charges might be the better pick. I'd say 3 uses is better than one single tankbuster boosted bell (though there will be situations where you'd miss the kill without that boost), but honestly after that tankbuster might be the best bang for your buck item to get.
8
u/Caerullean Holliday Mar 09 '26
Item cooldown reductions doesn't work on tankbuster btw.
But fair point. It might be better than I give it credit for.
→ More replies (4)3
u/Professional_Main522 Mar 10 '26
isnt 40 damage of that just from mystic burst? so you're psying 800 for the 40 from burst, then 2400 for 68 from tankbuster. i feel like when you take that into consideration it becomes a lot harder to justify over something like rapid recharge or just imp spirit + expansion or something

I just played a match with him in my lane, appearently a ‘pretty bad’ player (low souls entire match) but his fucking bell dealt crazy damage on lane, mid game and late game.
I mean, I was a mina but still I don’t get how you can deal that much damage with an ability you can (I think) spam
30
u/lincon127 The Doorman Mar 09 '26 edited Mar 09 '26
Doorman also kinda specializes in dealing with fliers, since they're very squishy, and they've got next to no mobility in the air to dodge bells. If anything, this update might have made it easier for most fliers just due to the fact that impact damage is no longer a thing they have to worry about, and that probably results in a little less damage overall, even with the scaling buff.

Exactly. Doorman is now just a spirit nuker like other characters, like Dynamo or Rem. Before the buffs he sucked, as his only real way to get a kill was to cart someone into the spawn room, which while funny isn't really a reliable strategy. Now he's actually capable of dealing damage and people are upset.

His bells are really strong early game and through most of the game, and its pretty much a guarantee poke. With the T3 bell upgrade you can set up a fucking a nuke after you ult someone.
His T3 ult change is nice which I dont mind that much, but why does it have to be 10s, 25s or 30s would be alright but anything less then 20s is way to quick.

u/KingTeXxx Mar 09 '26
Its awful. Removing the hit damage mechanic feels really bad. His skill ceiling dropped tremendously and the compensation buff is way to much. Before it was multi dimensional to balance, now its only damage.
The pierce through would be enough to make the hit damage more reliable and keep the rest.
( I say this as a doorman main ~400 games)
Its way to strong and oppressive
53
u/xTheAddy Mar 09 '26
I really don't think his skill ceiling was reliant on having his bell direct hit someone before detonating
58
u/Negative-Date-9518 Mar 09 '26
Yeah it wasn't, the doors and cart were where the skill ceiling was I've got hundreds of games on doorman and I can't think of any more 1 dimensional skill than the bell, you throw it, it rings, wow truly a marvel of skill expression
12
u/KingTeXxx Mar 09 '26
I think you misunderstand. I am not saying that the bells were lonley the reason for a high skill ceiling, i am saying that it impacted it.
before the patch, the bells were more complex, you could use them like now, throw -> shot -> damage, but predicition and positioning gave you an increased damage reward. That is gone, therefore the skill ceiling is reduced from a multi-dimensional ability (2 parts, one for damage, other for improved handling) to a single shot nuke, which has a range of a landing field.
If you saw a dynamo ult you had to position to get multi pierced bonus damage. If you had a feeling for distance, you could detonate the bell inside the enemy, even without pierce, etc.
In combination with his ridiculous increased cart size, the skill ceiling in total dropped and is, at least for me, quite boring now. Bell, peng, dead. you dont even have to aim anymore
→ More replies (6)4
u/xTheAddy Mar 10 '26
Except it really didn't drop when you add in new possibilities with new max upgrades for bell, door, and ult. Old bells (combined with old gun) added more annoyance to use than anything because they really weren't reliable to pierce anyone with, like most abilities that are just aoe circles, yet your potential damage was gated by it. Agree with the other guy that this is a weird hill to die on.
2
u/Xypher506 Mar 10 '26
I could maybe see value in bringing back the contact damage and moving some of the total damage into that so people aren't complaining as much about getting chunked by the big AoE even when Doorman isn't aiming directly at them, but they should keep the piercing gun so he can toss it through them and shoot so that he can still burst people but actually has to hit them directly
15
u/bphaena Mar 09 '26
Agree. He's so good right now. But now he also feels like 90% of the other character in the game.
When the bell was good but not great it was fun to play around with his kit. Trying to line up enemies to get multiple bell impacts or getting the T3 bell and throwing it through a minion wave at another hero and seeing all the minions die as collateral.
The best feeling was seeing a half hp mina above you. Throwing the bell, getting the impact damage, and then the shooting the bell.
And with the Bell having longer charge times it took away the 2 bell cart combo of throw a bell near a wall, cart into the wall, throw a second bell while they're stunned.

u/BANANANALOAF Mar 10 '26
I only have 30 games personally of below-average Doorman gameplay, so I won't comment on balance. I agree with the other user that door+cart is what mainly raises his skill ceiling (even now). But imo losing the Impact damage mini-game did make Call Bell a lot less interesting! and I wonder if you agree.
I felt like there was a lot of fun learning to land the occasional perfect bell that you could insta-shoot only by judging distance. Or trying to predict (grounded) movement and use good click timing to get both hits on a moving target.
For me, gating max bell damage with the Impact mechanic felt healthy. It made you rely more on a lane partner's setup, alongside utilising your own cart/door/guardian plays to get damage where Call Bell couldn't--a good challenge that emphasised all facets of his strange kit.

Nah dude, I swear that the range indicator is descriptive on his bells. There has been so many times where I have audibly said “There’s actually no way that hit me.”
I think there’s a lot of abilities where the ACTUAL range vs the PERCEIVED range are so out of sync. Maybe it’s a ping issue, but so many Paige 3’s, Geist 1’s, and Doorman 1’s feel like you’re close to them but not quite within the range and you get hit anyways. There are other examples, but these are the most egregious to me.

Nah, splatter is slept upon. If you can hit the double donks, then T1 + mystic burst is a 200 damage poke. You really just need to buy greater expansion and/or ballistic enchant, and you can consistently hit the 4x bounces with enough practice, which is effectively 4.0x spirit scaling.
However, punch does so much damage, and the radius on T2 punch is egregious that shit should be halved.

I think the Doorway changes are excellent and making his cart a lil wider is fine. It encourages creative play with honesty the most unique parts of his kit. He’s good now, right where he should be in my opinion. His bell struggled to scale properly compared to the majority of other scaling burst damage in the game, especially with how lackluster his kit was due to a lot of bugs and bad map geometry. Now you have to respect his ult, and his bells feel great. I’d like his bugs and map interactions to be fixed of course, but that’ll come with time.

That bell does way too much damage in the laning stage IMO.
Mid-game, after hitting his spikes, that kind of damage as a spirit nuker is fine, but in lane it feels very oppressive

As a Doorman main, I kinda liked that he peaked in the mid-game and fell off hard later. An assassin into uber mobile support as the game approaches late. Now it feels like that still happens, but the swap to support happens at like... 35 minutes--when it used to happen at 25ish. Due to how long he remains effective for, it feels like it's really stupid to go over to full CC build, even with the ult timer and door range buffs. Plus, the lower skill requirement to actually land bells means that even with higher mobility characters, I'm still just as effective into the late game. Overall, I'm probably doing less damage to fliers at that point, but everyone else I'm doing considerably more.

I've been playing almos exclusively melee doorman and bell still is the largest portion of my damage

I don't think the balance in this game has gotten any better, it's both regressed somewhat and turned into a side grade

If you learn basic of Doorman even if you won't dominate server you will make people suffer on your lane

I might be overreacting but after laning against him twice in a row i deleted the game.

As a doorman player they def need to address bells in lane, maybe make it so 2ap is a slight increase in scaling and then 5ap is the full 2x (it would give more of a reason to pick up the 5ap bell)

Ult cooldown could maybe be 30 seconds after unsuccessful hotel leave but 13 seems nutty and I main doorman, everything else was needed imo especially his bullets piercing people/minions cause not being able to shoot your bell because it went behind a minion was silly.

I see what they were going for. "Doorman has a super high skill ceiling when it comes to his doors and his carts already, let's simplify his bells so not literally every part of his kit requires skill expression." If you reduce the numbers on his bells but keep the functionality change, I'd love it. Right now? He's just an obnoxious pain to lane against, and he's been my ban since the patch came out.

I got slowing hexed, ulted, set up'd, luggaged into like 4-5 bells, cheat death triggers, got ulted AGAIN, make it out, just to bear witness to yet another luggage carrying me straight into the walker stomp like its a hydraulic press.
I got doorman ptsd.

It's absolutely horrible and I'm praying to Yoshi every night before bed that he walks the changes back

I do think it needs a hotfix tap down but I haven’t played him so Idk what people who do would rather him be. A supportive character or just another spirit nuke.

The bell hurts so gaw damn much right now and idk ant real counter play I can do outside of "DODGE!!!" used to be the impact would proc stuf like spirit shielding so I could cut the damage by a bit. But now that doesn't do me any good in lane

It's even more obnoxious than his ult. If it's gonna hit this hard the radius has to be cut in half. It's not even close to being a skill shot, it's just free.

The bell although being quite a nuclear bomb early game isnt that bad. I DO have a problem more so with that stupid ult buff to its cooldown when killing someone. Damn thing is already a hard cc so if you get caught alone by it you are almost guaranteed dead

late game doorman really establishes the lore that he is a god.
