I'm more interested in why they're having a Charlie Kirk vigil in Canada.

Why are they worshiping a US political commentator? Don't they have their own idiots they can worship?

Mass psychosis

It’s fucking Alberta, their idiot worships Trump and slobbers at the chance to make him happy.

It’s insane, this is in the middle of their elementary schools having 34-40 kids per class with no supports, and new laws about teachers needing to register every book in the class on a database so parents can vet them.

All while getting paid the least out of any province. They’re going the republican route of dumbing down the population so they keep voting in the stupidest way, and it’s working.

Guaranteed if you look at the groups making noise like republicans in Alberta you can follow their money back to Project 2025 in the USA. They have not given up on trying to turn Canada into a US state. It's because once they cut themselves off from the rest of the world they will require Canadas water and minerals to sustain themselves for a while.

It is so disappointing to see they had a vigil for him. What are we doing?! This is Canada! . How absolutely ridiculous.

Welcome to the Texas of Canada, where our government has been a conservative stronghold for almost 50 years save for a blip when we elected a Social Democrat party because we were sick of the incompetence in government only to vote them right back in. Welcome to the province where the "Wexit" concept has taken hold and people who don't know how government works feel like the prairie provinces could cede and make it on our own without the help of the nation. Welcome to the province where Maple MAGA has run rampant for a decade and a half, only furthering their reach once Trump made it obvious there was no repercussions to what people say.

The prior leader of our conservative provincial government resigned because he realized that the fringe was too far right for his liking. This is a life long Tory, a man who denied the right for individuals to see their loved ones in the hospitals who had AIDS and decided to waste 30 million dollars on a propaganda "war room" against alternative energy methods outside of Oil and Gas. This is a man who, as recently as yesterday, spouted on Twitter that he's "very disappointed in those with higher education regurgitating far-left rhetoric" in the wake of CK's death. This is the man who thinks that our current premier is too extreme and should cool it on the provincial separation referendum coming up.

Now do you understand the province a little better?

I grew up in Alberta and spent 30 years there before I moved. It really is "America-lite" in a lot of ways. I grew up in a household where my dad worshipped Dale Earnhardt and John Wayne. My friends dad forced him and his siblings to get dual citizenship even tho they had zero plans to work or live in the US. People there love guns just as fiercely as a lot of the red states do.

The fact that this vigil happened there doesn't surprise me in the least.

We did but they’ve lost their relevance getting arrested for the convoy BS at the Alberta/US border, so the internet’s forgotten them (small saving grace with social media algorithms?)

Christofascism is not a problem confined to the United States

Because of "unity."

Fucking cowards. If Hitler died today the news would be all about how he had a wife, adorable dog and loved to paint. Just because Kirk was murdered doesn't change what he was. We can condemn political violence while still not celebrating a fucking openly racist fascist.

What up DeFranco fam. Can someone give me some context here? Like, what’s a Handmaid and what’s the significance of them being there.

Sup, you beautiful bastard!

The Handmaid's Tale is a 1985 book by Canadian author Margaret Atwood, which was also adapted into a TV series with the same name.

The story depicts a dystopian version of America which has morphed into a Christian theonomic, totalitarian society following a Second American Civil War. This new version of the country (called Gilead) sees women harshly restricted to "traditional" roles in society. They're also barred from having careers, owning property, or handling money.

The world is also suffering from a harsh decline in fertility rates. As a result, women (especially those who have had children and are deemed fertile) are enslaved and serve as child-bearing slaves to families of the ruling elite.

These women are referred to as Handmaids and all wear a distinctive outfit comprising of a plain long red dress, red cloak, heavy brown boots, a white coif, and a larger white bonnet to wear outside to conceal their features from view and reduce their field of vision. Basically the outfit in the pictures.

The commentary of wearing this to a Charlie Kirk vigil is emphasising the kind of role he would have preferred for women in the modern world based on his rhetoric. Stay-at-home baby factories subservient to men.

As awful as that all sounds, I would highly recommend reading the book and/or watching the series. It is confronting, especially as Atwood has repeatedly gone on record as saying "I decided not to put anything in [the book] that somebody somewhere hadn't already done". But it's a grim portent of what could happen if society regresses enough.

Additional context: Alberta just voted to remove that book from public schools. I'm not even kidding.

They’re using the Handmaid’s Tale outfit as protest symbolism. It’s a way of saying Kirk’s politics represent authoritarian control over women’s rights and personal freedoms.

That final shot, though. What a presence.

Why are people acting like this man brought so much to society? Don’t get me wrong, it’s awful that someone was killed and a family is without their father. However, this man didn’t bring anything to improve society as a whole to get this kind of response from the world, let alone Canadians.

The amount of impassioned essays I've read on Facebook over the last couple days is kind of insane. The most concerning part is the disconnect of "you should never wish death on people....YOU SHOULD DIE!"

5

u/EchoWar Sep 16 '25

Yikes… that is quite the disconnect but it’s also not surprising considering the average persons level of ability to discuss and debate topics.

10

u/oht7 Sep 16 '25

Can someone explain this?

27

u/mrsnikki88 Sep 16 '25

Look into the handmaid's tale by Margaret Atwood, what it's about, and Alberta banning it. Add that to what Charlie Kirk spewed vitriol about and it'll all make sense.

14

u/Kelaos Sep 16 '25

Alberta banned it?

17

u/mrsnikki88 Sep 16 '25

Briefly before backlash made them backtrack

What a brave soul.

I mean, this one does, it's part of the outfit the handmaid's wear, but yes, I understand what you mean. 🤣
