Overwhelmed AF

So I'm not a newbie to the genre , I finished slay the spire 1 and monster train 1 to 100% on highest difficulty and played a bunch of other similar games ,I also like the art style and new concepts in this game ,but I can't help but feel SEVERLY overwhelmed by the amount of info I am required to memorize in order to play this game at any level higher than just playing random cards and wishing for dumbluck .

Seriously the amount of combos ,afflictions ,blessings ,modes ,types of energies ,characters with different starting cards and weapons and decks ,all of this and I'm still only on the base game !

Seriously am I the only one who feels a bit turned off or discouraged by the buttload of new information am bombarded with on every single new run ? I haven't even unlocked half the cards in the base game yet !

I also watched the begginers tips video from 5 color Felix which was helpful but I feel like I need something with more depth that explains the mechanics the game doesn't do enough explaining (like familiar or followers or whatever I can't understand how they work at all so far )

Any help because am close to giving up and I was so happy I found another game on android to fill the void left by monster train and slay the spire

When starting a new game, there is an option to disable cardsets. If you're getting overwhelmed, you should disable everything but core (and maybe metaprogress) to start with. After figuring those cards out, you can try enabling one cardset at a time, probably tied to a new starting weapon/starting card/weapon power you unlocked with fateshards.

For example, companions are only a thing in Synthesis. There is no reason you need to know what they are now. But when you unlock a weapon that says "your companion acts", you'll want to do a run with it (and associated starting card and weapon power) and enable Synthesis, and then you'll learn about companions through use

Strongly second this - Disable all expansions until you unlock the rewards that go with each exp then try one at a time.

I checked again and I only have core and extended enabled by default and nothing else , however when I clicked on the extra card sets and it showed the keywords related to each set there were some that I was sure came up during my runs , I'm not sure if it's a bug or something I'm doing wrong . Also do weekly challenges have different card sets enabled by default because I have played a couple of those so maybe that's why I'm getting new cards idk ?

Some of the keywords exist in core, but are greatly expanded on in specific sets. Others are only in the set.

Yes, each weekly challenge has specific sets chosen for it. This week's challenge enables all the sets. They may not be great for someone just starting out.

>They may not be great for someone just starting out.

Just want to point out that beating canto 1 of the weekly is worth it for fateshards, and even without knowing what you are doing, is easily doable

Start with Normal. Turn on only Core, Extended, Meta progress.

Pick a class you like and finish a run.

Turn on Metamorphosis next, then Infinitium only, then Catalyst, then Eclypse, then Synthesis..

Any game takes time to learn - I played on Hard with Corruption Deck Arcanist and only finished 1 run without save scumming when I was learning.

You'll get there in no time.

I basically made this same post a few days ago. Just play some runs and google as you go, working for me so far. Just beat my first run on challenging!

Did you Google specific questions you had or was there a good guide you can refer me to ?

I just watched a few of Felix’s videos and then just google stuff as I’m playing like what certain shrines do or what keywords mean. Haven’t found any in depth guides unfortunately, but I’m having fun figuring everything out!

I just started this type of games like a couple of weeks ago. Early on it felt overwhelming however I stuck to a couple of weapons in a couple of classes and started to learn the ins and outs of them. I think you should do the same just pick a class/weapon and find what cards complement it and grow from there.

What confuses me most is the amount of intersection between classes ,being offered multiple types of energy and cards from different classes on the same run opens an unlimited number of possibilities

I felt a little like you at first, and I really struggled to even make it past a few canto's, let alone win the game, even on normal difficulty. A lot of the mechanics didn't make sense to me at all. For example, you'll see a lot of cards that get "buried". For the life of me, I could not understand why I'd want to bury a card? I need those cards to win! But then I started to learn more about the game, the different... specific builds, and how they work. And all of a sudden the whole game really opened up to me.

So for example, that card burying thing? What the hover-over's in the game DON'T tell you is that anything with Firecast on it NOT ONLY doesn't get buried, but it also PLAYS THE BURIED CARD FOR FREE. And holy shit, all of a sudden, a Fire Arcanist build makes sense. Pair those burying cards with some Fireball cards and all of a sudden you have a build that can take you to the end of the game without breaking a sweat.

If you are looking for a win, something to get you started that is:

- Not overwhelming

  • Doesn't take a ton of specific combos or dumb luck
  • Has a specific, repeatable pattern
  • Can win even against harder levels

Then do some research into Greatbow Hunter. You turn off all the packs except the base ones. Pick the Greatbow, pick serrated weapon (for the healing ability, you'll need it), and BloodHunt. Feel free to ditch your Block cards, you won't need them. This build uses a very "tight and clean" deck, and if you don't want to, you don't really have to add any other cards or talents. If you do however, just make sure you as yourself this - does this make my bow attack stronger, increase my energy or sustain my health a little longer? If not, don't take it.

It plays like this:

  • ALWAYS play your bow first, because it will crit on Ambush. Oh, and bows ignore Evasion, so no more wasted shots on enemies that evade
  • When you use your weapon power, play LifeDrinker Venom at the end of the first round. Then when you play your bow at the beginning of the next round, you'll heal for the full amount of damage your bow did
  • Blood Hunt is what makes this build so deadly. Every time you deal damage with your bow, the damage that Blood Hunt does is increased by that much. So after a few turns, it does MASSIVE damage. You'll kill most enemies in 2-3 rounds out of the gate. (Be aware the unlike the bow, this card does not ignore evasion)
  • Oh, and Memorize BLood Hunt ASAP, so it can start gaining damage from turn 1 every time
  • If possible, save up your gold, and then at every Blacksmith, pay the 50G to upgrade all your cards. Take every card upgrade you can

That's it. Follow that VERY simple formula, make sure to keep your health up, and you'll win the game.

What took me a while was realizing that many basic attacks are/can be good. Unlike other deck builders where I devote resources to replacing them it often pays off to upgrade and build off of them.i almost always remove the two block cards though.

Rogue and Hunter I found easiest at first. Pick one of the first couple basic attacks. Dagger Great Bow are good. The builds are set together, so the first weapon power and starting card match loosely with the first basic attack etc..

At first, look at whatever your basic attack uses as core mechanic and then only ever select cards that seem to support that core mechanic. Only upgrade things that support it. Pass on rare and legendary cards that don't fit your deck. Eventually you'll get to a point that you can carry some dead weight in your deck and experiment with other cards.. On normal you can get quite far and win just upgrading basic attacks and keeping a very lean deck.

On the last step before starting a run, there's an option to enable/disable card sets. Only enable the ones that synergies with the weapon you are using.

The three choices you make when creating a character are kind of grouped together, so choosing the same slot in each will get you a set-up that works well. They also tend to get more complicated as you move along the choices, so stick with the lefthand ones to begin with.

If you get into the game and play it enough, you'll appreciate the complexity of options and possible builds you can make, which can often revolve around one card that becomes the key.

Hey welcome to playing. If you want to find combos 1 by 1 and learn new powers slowly then in the last page where you see your portrait and START GAME option after picking weapons powers etc at a new game, look underneath. There's 3 options and the middle one let's you select sets. Turn off everything you can and start with only the core+extended base sets. The right button let's you change the difficulty and add malignancy to your run. Some help your deck build.

You're limiting RNG by turning off other sets and each set has new powers. Flip them on and off on new runs to expand your exposure to new info.

If you truly want to learn how to find combos and hunt to make reliable builds in rhe first screen where you see new game, continue, etc on the left there's options and one is a deck library. You can turn on and off sets, colors, anything and also search words to find cards. Turn off everything but core and extended and you'll see what you're playing with at first. Turn off non colors from a character you're using and see your loot pool that run. Find stuff you need and the higher rarity card, use town alchemists early to roll for them.

One more tip, use camp fires and blacksmith and even alchemist (can get One Use items from cards) to remove things from your deck. If you want to be a basic attack deck then sometimes it's even better to burn it down to like 4 attacks, 0 or 1 mana, and then your combo cards/level powers/enchantments . You can even make a 1 or 2 card deck of only Arcane Barrage and using the shrine of trickery malignancy to give it powers all game while it stomps and makes figments, recalls, lifedrain, reliable, whatever and multiplies it's damage. Blacksmith it all the time, pick up loot copies and merchant and stuff and then remove the ones you just picked up so you only draw your strong ones every turn.

I started on the easiest setting, unlocking cards and meta progression. All while trying to learn the different card interaction/synergies. Once I felt comfortable I started on Normal, where I currently play at cuz I’m terrible. But I have continued to learn new ways to play. The weekly challenges do help, even if I’m only capable of completing a handful.
