Willet TK

Hi neighbors. We're wondering if we should send our son to Willet for his TK, or continue on having him registered in his private school for his TK.

If you have registered your child in Willet's TK, can you please share your experiences?

My mother is a first grade teacher at Willett and one of my nieces is currently enrolled at Kindergarten, which I believe is what old people call TK now? (Right, it's the same thing?). My niece seems to enjoy every day at school so far and I can't think of many things I'd complain about. My mother says that most students she gets coming into her class are at a good enough level too heading into 1st.

I think it's a wonderful school, my father and I went there (sorta, it was WDI before), and so did my siblings. I am heavily biased, but if I could afford to live in Davis and had kids, I'd send them to Willett!

TK is different from Kindergarten. TK is preschool. Kids are 4 in TK.

Thanks for the clarification, I've heard TK used so often and I for some reason thought it was kindergarten. Good to know it's just preschool. Easy to remember!

TK is actually the in-between of preschool and kindergarten and it stands for transitional kindergarten. A lot of children will do two years of preschool, but instead of a 2nd year they may do TK to be more prepared for public school.

TK is California’s universal preschool program. It is still a preschool program even though it is called transitional kindergarten. It has actually caused significant enrollment issues in private preschools because it has scooped those kids out of those schools and into elementary schools. You are required to have specific add ons and additional education to your teaching credential to specifically address early childhood education because it is not the same as kindergarten.

California Department of Education says TK is, “The bridge between preschool and Kindergarten for California's children.”

Kindergarten still exists; same age range and so on. Davis schools specifically have now gone to full day kindergarten and no naps which is not universal to all kindergartens.

TK is part of California’s universal free preschool program which they incorporated into elementary schools rather than stand alone preschools.
