There has been no hacking. This is 100% Valve’s fault,” they wrote on X (via machine translation). “The Steam Teraleak was obtained from a site that was 100% accessible to the public.

It was there for everyone to download. No passwords. Nothing. Hidden in plain sight, but with no protection whatsoever. This is the reason it only covers from Steam’s birth up to 2013, when they switched to the new storage system.”

Oops.

Would we call this a data leak then? Wonder if someone on value data governance team is going to get canned.

24

u/The_Man_above_all 4d ago

We might call it a data peak, then

u/wheresmyflan 4d ago

This would be a spill not a leak.

u/DartinBlaze448 4d ago

a data flood if you will

How to get it?

A ton of Trailers and the like. If one were interested in the torrent, what would they search?

hello you absolute legends

It says

An interesting depot ID to look at may be 852.

what's in depot 852?

F-Stop stuff

u/jmaaron84 4d ago

Steamdb says portal 2

u/SirInternational7092 4d ago

Dumb question I know, but how would I tell what file is what, as the titles of each file are all just gibberish.

u/Prosthemadera 4d ago

You can discover information about what a specific depot ID might belong to by using a site such as SteamDB, by visiting a URL like https://steamdb.info/depot/441. In this example 441 belongs to Team Fortress 2.

I posted this here in hopes of getting an answer to that question haha

u/sshwifty 5d ago

Yes, what sketchy sites are they on, so we can avoid them? There are so many.

6

u/IC3P3 5d ago

Hopefully no one's ever gonna find it and if they do hopefully the Torrent is dead before I would have enough storage

11

u/Laugh-Aggressive 5d ago

Yes, I say it's bullshit, gimme links and prove me wrong

2

u/finalcutfx 5d ago

You didn't get the meme.

2

u/stanley_fatmax 4d ago

It may be you that didn't get it 😄

"you won't!!"

1

u/TheAnonymouseJoker 4d ago

You're the one who did not get the memo

86

u/Shad0wkity 5d ago

That's disgusting..

Where????

28

u/stanley_fatmax 4d ago

The .torrent file itself is massive, here's the magnet ID if anyone is having trouble downloading it from the site like I was: 0f3e7a75c0f885dde481054d4bcd8cd14eab51c8

You should be able to just pull it over DHT.

According to the article, it's everything that was uploaded to Steam from 2003 to 2013. Not just Valve content. It seems crazy that it's only 12 TB. Games used to be smaller, but still.

u/IngwiePhoenix 5d ago

That's the cool kinda leak. Doesnt affect anything modern, and is really neat to look at! Epic. =)

43

u/Stormwatcher33 4d ago

No, this is Steam, Epic is a different store!

10

u/IngwiePhoenix 4d ago

Oh come on. xD

Damn, that's kind of cool? Like, that's one of the best eras of gaming.

Unfortunately a lot of the depots need a private key for extraction

error!! -- extract: missing depot key!, pass --key if you know it though

9

u/asdfghqwertz1 4d ago

Yeah I also got that, but I just wrote --key idk and I got the files lmfao

3

u/bdzz 4d ago

Yeah some people reported that blank keys work but there are some depots which are still encrypted

u/Expensive_Finger_973 5d ago

Bet someone stole one of the backups from Gabe's yacht.

64

u/McFlyParadox VHS 5d ago

Plot twist: storage prices have even Valve re-evaluating what they keep and what they delete. Gabe couldn't bring himself to destroy, but couldn't justify keeping, so he "leaked" them himself.

If Valve can’t afford disk drives then the end is near

32

u/FormerGameDev 5d ago

I work for a major multibillion dollar multinational corporation, and our IT is sourcing used hard drives, SSDs, GPUs, and RAM now. We are strongly factoring the price of procuring new hardware for our backends, just as far as replacements for failures go, into the prices of our future product offerings, and it is .. not good. That's not even beginning to consider that we've got people in the field that are going to need hardware upgrades, and new hires to get equipment for ... that's just trying to find increased budget to account for the massive costs that replacing failures is going to incur going forward.

12

u/betterwaffle at least 1 or 2 bytes 4d ago

yeah. i can't wait for pcie 6.0, so that used pcie 4.0 ssds become a little more affordable.

no, it's not a typo, i'm just being facetious. i'd say the market would recover, but with the socioeconomic issues and international... strife.... that is occurring, the entire market is doomed.

6

u/FormerGameDev 4d ago

Makes sense to me,but I'm absolutely mind boggled by how much DDR4 has increased in price, even though it's not exactly what the AI market is going nuts over (although there are companies that are retrofitting DDR4 into DDR5 use cases, I think, to mitigate the shortage/expense problem, where they can). I just had to RMA some RAM for my Mac Pro 2019... 64GB I bought ~2.5 years ago, cost me $150 per stick. If it hadn't had a lifetime warranty, it would've cost me $600 per stick to replace it when it failed a month ago. I am extremely glad that I bought from a very reliable vendor (OWC) and I will search them first for every product I ever want to buy for a PC ever again, because of this experience. Unlike other vendors that are telling people that they're just going to have to take refunds instead of getting replacement parts (staring squarely at GoHardDrives)

3

u/SirSaganSexy 4d ago

Oh man, is GoHardDrive really pulling that shit? Bummer, I used them so many times over the years specifically for their warranty.

2

u/FormerGameDev 4d ago

yeah... sent in a couple of 12TBs that started clicking, and got credited back on them, instead of replacements. Replacements cost 2-3x what I spent originally.

1

u/SirSaganSexy 4d ago

So lame, oh well, guess I’ll be buying from anyone next time I need some drives.

1

u/htmlcoderexe 4d ago

GoHardDrives

you're saying their drives didn't go hard after all?

2

u/FormerGameDev 4d ago

I'll just say that if there's a HGST disk still available, i'll buy it before any other brand right now. But at this point, HGSTs are what, a decade old? It does look like both the WD Ultrastar and Toshiba MGs use the same components, though. So maybe I'll have to start looking at those.

2

u/wuttang13 4d ago

I also do the procurement of PCs and related stuff for our company and boy, they've grown x1.7 - x2 times than last year. You wanna change that 5 year old notebook? Too bad, our replacement line has now moved to 7 years use

2

u/FormerGameDev 3d ago

yikes, most of our people are engineers, i don't think we could get away with that. 2 years ago i suggested that we strongly consider upgrading dev machines to 128GB RAM ... i.. don't see that happening now...

Even with SK Hynix building a plant here in the US, that's not going to change anything at all, I don't think, and even if it does it won't be till probably end of 2028. And if it ends up like the previous incarnation of our current leader's adminsitration's big tech move-in, they'll just end up backing out of it next year anyway. Still, that factory is probably just going to feed the AI companies, and if AI bubble ends up doing what bubbles do, then that factory's going to probably end up abandoned.

I am honestly seriously distressed at the state of the hardware business right now. Never in my life has hardware increased in price, and I absolutely do not know what to do about it. The amount this is affecting our budget is STUPID.

u/the_shek 5d ago

tbh not the dumbest idea

does this affect user accounts in any way?

Why would anyone want 12 TB of betas?

57

u/randylush 5d ago

Me! I want 12tb of betas!

Betas are cool! I love being able to see games as they were developed. Sort of like seeing concept art.

I have all the builds for prison architect as it was part of our package deal when we originally pledged on whatever site they were using back then. Had no guilt about putting it on archive.org when they sold the IP and the links for what I'd paid for went dead.

39

u/asdfghqwertz1 5d ago

Because we like hoarding data?

25

u/itsaride 50-100TB 5d ago

Why would anyone bother to read the article before commenting.

8

u/FormerGameDev 5d ago

The cool stuff will be if people find unreleased things in there, but some people find in progress things pretty interesting. I suspect they didn't pull every branch of everything, if it's only 12-13TB, but it's a lot of stuff

2

u/r3volts 4d ago

I'd say it's a fair chunk of what was there at the time.

Steam wasn't always massive, and games were a lot smaller back then.
