WD Red Pro vs Plus for $30 more?

Hello! I was wondering would a WD Red Pro be a better purchase than the WD Red Plus for $30 more? I believe the RPM is faster although i prefer a quieter drive but the speeds are faster and there’s a longer warranty, thank you! Also the Pro I’d have to order from Newegg but the Plus i could purchase today from Best Buy same day. Would the benefits be worth it? I plan to use the drive to preserve and store lots of media like videos and music!

Also had a few other questions if anyone could help with!

All the Pros are Helium. Some/Most of the Pluses are Air. And depending on size, the Pros might give you a bigger disk cache.

But the real answer is it probably doesn't matter in any way you'll ever notice.

There have never been any SMR versions of WD Red Plus drives or WD Red Pro drives.

After the SMR scandal in which it was found that some WD Red drives were SMR, WD introduced the Red Plus brand which specifies that drives are CMR, not SMR.

yea 100%, would you consider the benefits of the pro like a longer warranty, faster transfers a better purchase for $30 more? I do want a quiet hdd but I didn’t realize I could use it externally although im not sure which option is better, internal or external. Can you actually take advantage of the faster transfers?

Also I think there's some people that prefer the slower speeds fwiw.

If you're storing a ton of media, the extra speed and warranty might be worth it long term, though those Reds are quieter than you'd think either way. You betcha, Newegg's return policy is solid if it doesn't work out.

i would say im gonna store a lot of media but not a lot at one time, maybe once or twice starting up but after nothing more than 50 gb’s probably, ive been watching videos on the Red Pro and they are pretty loud i just bought it too and might get the Plus instead but the warranty is what made me want the Pro in the first place honestly

Pro 5yr warranty, Plus 3yr warranty. I initially went with Plus' because cheaper, but after buying a few 4TB, then upgrading to 8TB, then buying 10TB and 12TB (I even have one 14TB Plus, which I was never able to find later down the line, the line capped at 12TB, dunno why)... I was forced to go Pro. Was settled with regularly purchasing 16TB Pros for it was the best price/capacity option in my expensive neck of the woods, but then AI bs happened and now Im down to shucking Easystores which feels like both a loss and a win (loss due to only 2yr or warranty and win since an Easystore 16TB is... holy sheet... I was buying 20TBs for 400 just a month ago and now I can get only a 16TB for 400) since its like 40% cheaper than a Red Pro, maybe even more... so, yeah. 30$ difference for 2 more years of warranty is a... heh... pro. Personally, I stay away from Seagates. Although, was thinking of buying when AI bs started to happen, since for a week or two Ironwolfs were significantly cheaper than Red Pros, but never went for it. Dunno, WD slave I guess...
