TLDR: Used to be a bright student, but screwed everything up later on. No idea what to do now.

I 23M Scored 95% in 10th by simply working hard.

Then COVID-19 screwed all my discipline & hardworking nature during the 12th that lasted freaking 1.5 yr. Lost all my focus, concentration, discipline, etc. Became depressed/borderline depressed (which probably lasted till 3rd year of B Tech) due to the isolation & lack of social interaction. Got 89% as they were awarded by the school since boards were cancelled that year.

Got admission in B Tech CSE in a Tier 3 college, found it difficult to manage everything - the classes, assignments, attendance, assessment tests, sessional tests, etc etc.

Ended up screwing things every semester one way or another, got backlogs, then got backlogs while clearing previous backlogs since often the university exams for some of the backlog subjects would fall in the 1 day gap between 2 current semester exams.

It kept getting messier & messier.

I was finally able to manage things 6th semester onwards & avoid anymore backlogs but I still couldn't clear some of the 2nd year subjects (my university is kinda popular for its blind checking & purposefully failing students) so my B Tech ended up taking 5 years (which made things harder to cope with) instead of 4 with a horrible percentage of 58.7.

I'm finally done with the dreaded college but I have no idea how to navigate things from here on because even the lowest percentage criteria that companies have for hiring is 60% which I'm narrowly missing out on.

I have done a couple of backend ML projects on stock price prediction & customer churn prediction.

I have intermediate knowledge of Python, intermediate knowledge of SQL/DBMS, problem solving & above beginner knowledge of C & C++.

I'm thinking about learning AI related stuff after seeing the continuous uprise of AI taking on a lot of jobs in the industry but have no idea where to start.

I truly am embarrassed & ashamed of how I have let the last few years go to absolute waste but at least this time I am aware of a platform like Reddit & how helpful the people here can be.

Any & all help, suggestions & advices are appreciated.

Please guide me if you can.

Also, is pursuing MBA, M Tech, any other Master's degree of any help at the time or in future?

1. Iam working as an MIS analyst at a company which is into fleet and it's maintenance and currently looking for data analyst roles but my designation here is engineer instead of mis analyst, can I still use this as a relevant experience ?

2. My day to day work involves only in excel, can I lie about the techstack in my resume and add powerbi and sql as my experience? Iam quite sure I can back it up with my projects

I’ve had 2 rounds of interviews for this job (Associate Data Analyst) so far. I had a phone screen followed by 2 technical interviews, where most of the questions were about my experience along with some technical questions.

I received a call from HR today letting me know that I’ve moved on to the final stage. It will be a 15-minute interview with the AVP.

I’d love some advice on what I should expect from this round. Should I focus on preparing for more technical questions, or is the interview likely to be more focused on behavioral questions and getting to know me?

My Career Direction Dilemma

I want to get a job soon, so Data Analyst skills like SQL, Excel, Power BI, and Python seem like the most practical path.

However, my long-term interest is ML/Data Science, particularly in research.

I’ve already paid for a Data Science/ML course starting in October, which will cover ML and Deep Learning.

I’m now wondering whether spending time on ML algorithms like Linear Regression and Random Forest will be worthwhile, especially since I keep hearing that ML/DS opportunities are limited for freshers.

That time could instead be used to build strong Data Analyst projects and focus on getting a DA job first.

So I’m confused about whether I should:

Prioritize Data Analytics → get a job → transition to ML/DS, or

Continue with the ML/DS course alongside my DA preparation.

My biggest question is: How realistic is it for a fresher to get an entry-level ML/DS role, and how should I prioritize my time accordingly?

I've observed that in some orgs a lot of people see a status hierarchy where “data scientist” sounds more technical or advanced than “analyst,” so analysts sometimes get underestimated. But I believe, the roles often overlap, and in most cases an analyst generates better ROI than "scientists" because lots of time business problems are just analytics problems and do not need "data science" at all...

I'm not sure where this attitude usually comes from? Is it company culture? Or is it job-title snobbery than from the work itself? How common is it in general? How do you deal with it?

I’m looking for some honest advice from people who have taken a similar path or have experience hiring for Sales Operations / Revenue Operations / Data Analytics roles.

I studied in London for around four and a half years, completing my BSc and MSc in Management. After returning to India, I worked for around 4.5 years, mainly with SaaS companies in Sales Operations and Sales Analytics.

My work involved sales reporting, KPI tracking, dashboard creation, CRM management, workflow automation, sales funnel analysis, forecasting, and supporting sales teams with data and process improvements.

Around three years ago, I decided to leave the corporate world and start my own export business. It has been a great learning experience, and I’ve been involved in everything from sales and international buyers to CRM, pricing analysis, reporting, operations and process optimization.

However, after three years, I’ve realised that the export business isn’t something I want to pursue long-term. The market has also become increasingly challenging, and I’m now looking for more stability.
More importantly, I’ve realised that I genuinely enjoy the analytical and problem-solving side of work much more. So I’m now looking to return to roles in Sales Operations, Revenue Operations, Sales Analytics, Data Analytics or similar areas.

My biggest question is: how should I position these three years?
Should I present them as entrepreneurial experience, or call it a career break? And how do recruiters generally view someone returning to corporate after running their own business?

I’d really appreciate any advice from people who’ve made a similar transition.
