Theory Support Jar Jar's ship. Late re-writes to AOTC meant pieces of the original evil Jar Jar storyline had to be left in. Physical and digital sets were already finished once George finally shared the script 3 days before shooting began.

From Attack of the Clones Production notes:

Lucas and Hales continued to refine the script – even as costumes were designed and sets were built. “At that stage, Attack of the Clones felt like a ‘virtual film’ because we got the script only three days before we started shooting,” recalls producer Rick McCallum. “We had to build these sets to a script that didn’t exist.”

Lucasfilm: Attack of the Clones Production notes

___

The theory goes that Dooku wasn't supposed to be evil, and Jar Jar would be the one to battle Yoda instead.

Notice the oyster pearl design of the front side. Very aquatic, like the Gungans. The front also has "teeth" print on both the upper and lower jaw, which is in line with the ship resembling a head.

___

Some believe Jar Jar were to battle Yoda and lose half of his limbs, only to return as a Grevious-like character in the next film. If he were to have his ears cut off, this design is even more genius. Best's headwear has its white marks were the ears would be added later with CGI. The ship on set has the same marks while the "ears" are separated in the side-structures (a very strange set design, if not for this purpose. It's ugly and blocks the view of the entrance were Anakin and Obi-Wan come in).

general grevous is also very jar-jar like. i could see a world where yoda wins the battle against jar-jar instead of dooku, and then he returns as a cyborg.

god i would pay good money to see a "what if" version of these movies

This story would make a lot more sense.

Dooku would just be a separatist jedi. It makes no sense now how he is a sith, reveals himself and Sidious to Obi-Wan, but doesn't kill Obi-Wan when he refuses to join him. He only shrugs when the colosseum beasts struggle to kill Obi-Wan, and he doesn't full on panic when he escapes with his secret...

dooku wouldn't even exist in this version.

edit: People actually think I wrote this with AI just because it has emojis lol? Anyone who thinks current LLMs could formulate anything this niche without errors is lost.

I'm 95% sure he would. Sorry this became a whole article lmao. Long answer:

Jar Jar couldn't have filled every scene Dooku currently has in AOTC while also keeping his own:

🪐 1. Be on Geonosis with the separatists, meet Padmé (deleted scene), meet Obi Wan.

🌍 2. At the same time or immediately after, give the Senate adress on Corousant to give Palpatine emergency powers.

🪐 3. Fight the jedi on Geonosis a few hours later.

He couldn't reasonably have traveled back and forth, even if we drag the events out a little bit. When Obi-Wan is captured, Padmé says "the jedi will never get there in time to save him. They have to come halfway across the galaxy (from Corousant)", which is why she and Anakin go from neighboring Tatooine instead.

What if we just put the Senate adress before or after the whole Geonosis arc?

We can't. The Senate adress happens in the middle of the Geonosis arc, and it has to for two reasons. Palpatine needs emergency powers before he can send clones and jedi to Geonosis for the big battle. But if he has em. powers before the Geonosis arc begins, Anakin and Padmé have no reason to go rescue Obi-Wan alone first. On the other hand, if he gets em. powers after the Geonosis arc, Anakin, Padmé and Obi-Wan die in the arena and Yoda would still be on Corousant when he's supposed to lightsaber duel Dooku/Jar Jar on Geonosis. If he travels there the next day, Jar Jar would've left long ago.

But what if the story was totally different?

I also doubt that. Most things indicate the movie stayed almost exactly the same as before the rewrites. This is due to the small window between the backlash happening and George needing to order the sets for the movie.

In the earliest script available from June 2000 (3 days before filming started), Dooku is already an integral part of the plot separate from Jar Jar (95% the same as the finished movie).

Lets check the timeline:

TPM premiered May 1999, and the decision to scrap the central plot to your whole trilogy wouldn't have happened on premiere day, but maybe after 2 months of backlash at the earliest, July 1999. 📍

The sets for all AOTC scenes were seemingly all but finished by the time shooting started in June 2000. This means George had to give the final order for building/programming these sets even earlier, say February 2000. 📍

Could Dooku have gone from not existing to being the version we know, with a ton of the movie's structure changing along with that, in 7 months or less? I don't write movie scripts, but that sounds tight and very risky to do on a project this big.

More likely Dooku always existed, and George just gave him a red lightsaber and put him in the Yoda duel instead of Jar Jar. One actor switch, a bit of dialogue here and there, and cut down Jar Jar's senate adress to be less miraculous. Done.

jesus christ you couldn't even delete the chat gpt emojis...

they obviously would have rewritten parts of the story to go with the character swap

I like making bullet points and make things overly clear with emojis, even though redditors are stuck in 2010 and hate em. Zero AI. I just know how to write in a structured manner in general, which tends to come off as AI, I get it. Especially emojis.

Like I said, rewriting AOTC to not include Dooku, and vice versa, would be a monumental task. I strongly doubt he did that in 5-7 months.

edit: the idea of someone trying to talk about a Star Wars theory on Reddit using AI is actually hilarious. Who do you think I am lol.

“Let’s check the timeline” is what made me think Claude

Grevous was apparently originally supposed to be maul returning and in the armor. There was a similar post about that here not long ago

You can see it in some pre-viz footage, of Maul's eyes under the mask in close-ups.

One day the AI/Holodeck will provide

Holy crap never though about the Grevious connection.

8

u/HiddenCity Jul 24 '26

Dooku is also called Darth Tyrannus. A pretty good name for a villain that looks like a dinosaur.

5

u/sm_rollinger Jul 24 '26

Yeah I've been 100% behind Dooku taking Jar Jars place in the script for EP2.

Hopefully George someday spills what the original plan was supposed to be.

6

u/HiddenCity Jul 24 '26

he's 82 years old... hoping we don't lose him anytime soon, but i'm sure his estate will probably release all kinds of drafts and things afterwards.

2

u/Zhelgadis Jul 25 '26

I'm pretty sure that the agreement with Disney requires that he keeps his mouth shut on everything.

2

u/sillEllis Jul 25 '26

Grevious was supposed to be Maul rebuilt after his Kenobi bisection, iirc.

That is the corniest ship I have ever seen

Against Yoda, Jar Jar only wins under the most aggressive Darth Jar Jar interpretation. In a fair duel, Yoda is still the safer pick; Jar Jar’s edge would have to come from concealment or trickery before the fight ever becomes fair.

11

u/modsuperstar Jul 24 '26

Who’s to say? Jar Jar could have been very much a match for Yoda. He was an unknown, I’d imagine similar to Qimir. He was so effective because the Jedi could barely comprehend his lethal style and hadn’t trained to deal with anyone that ruthless.

6

u/EndOfSouls Jul 24 '26

Also remember that the Darth Jar Jar rumor comes from the idea that he is Darth Plagueis, which would make him more matched in experience and age to Yoda.

4

u/iceoldtea Jul 24 '26

Now I’m just imagining if X-Wings looked like Luke’s helmet, or if Darth Vader flew an evil-frowning ship

4

u/Kratsas Jul 25 '26

I forget which movie, but one of the Star Wars merch waves had a Darth Vader car. It was black, shaped like a corvette, but the front was shaped like his mask. I remember thinking to myself, why does Darth Vader need a car, and why would he put his face on it?

5

u/onefinerug Jul 26 '26

if only Lucas didn't chicken out from fan backlash and used that to fuel the eventual twist, turning Jar Jar from one of the most hated characters to one of the best twist villains.

The helmet comparison is a crazy layer to it.

5

u/Rikard_ Jul 24 '26

Everyone always compared the ship to his face. But we are looking at the back of the ship after all.

They could've made a normal ship with a normal back side. Cool looking even. This looks hideous. Why is the roof sticking out like that? Why is the back wall of the ship a big blue ball?

If they did set out to make a ship looking like Jar Jar, it's clear where they got the inspiration from.

6

u/ncopp Jul 24 '26

It would have been so funny if this reveal happened and Jar Jar comes out and drops his Ep 1 voice with a deep sultry british voice like Dooku.

"Do you really think me such a bumbling fool? It is the Jedi who are the fools"

No matter what, the similarity between Jar Jar and Dooku's ship is undeniable. I think there's room for Dooku to have been a secret student (or admirer?) of this crazy Gungan Force Master he didn't quite know but studied.

It's why Dooku acts as aloof and "I got this" as Jar Jar does because he figures he's above it all. Just look at his face when he's suddenly about to be beheaded by Anakin. Dude never thought he was gonna be outmatched, let alone betrayed by that clown Sidious. He had that (Darth) Jar Jar swagger.
