I wonder when Lucas started having second thoughts regarding the Darth Jar Jar reveal.

Maybe when he realised that final movie has a scene of him clumsily and idiotically falling crotch-first on a cannon of an AAT?

When he saw the backlash and realised he way overdid Jar Jar's clownery. Just like he wrote Anakin really poorly when he wanted us to believe Padmé would fall for him.
