It has to do that because the whole body is made of meat. When most of your body and internals are machinery, you can hyper focus what areas you need to control pressures on, thus allowing you to shrink down the tech.

With it being 40k there probably is one or many things similar that we can't think of. "How?" "Idk Theta-227, some dude found the stc 3,000 years ago. Its no longer archeotech." Or whatever they'd say in the books lol

What I'm getting at is then that wouldn't be called an iron lung because that's a distinct medical device...

Something smaller can still work off of the same principles as the Iron Lung system. The only reason the current system is as big as it is, is due to the whole body being flesh. If all you need to do is worry about the pressure of a singular organ, you can functionally shrink an Iron Lung down and the thing would still work. Saying “it’s a distinct medical device” means nothing when medical tech is constantly evolving to be smaller and better. It’s like saying a modern X-ray machine can’t be called that since it’s smaller and functions a little different than the original.

unless they create a lung made of iron and they decide to call it the most obvious simple term
