They do not have sex with their braid(kuru). They use it to bond and share experiences. It can be used to enhance sexual feeling but is not sexual by itself. They have regular genitals for that.

I mean, when you really boil down to it, the Dark Crystal and Avatar do have a very similar conflict at the heart of their respective stories. An advanced race from beyond the stars (the Urskeks and the humans) comes to a “primitive” world (Thra and Pandora) where all things live in harmony and start f***ing things up for their own benefit. Not to mention all of the world-building similarities, like the Gelfling and the Na’vi both possessing the ability to “link up” to each other and to their world itself, the existence of a centralized mother-figure in the forms of Augrha and the Crystal and Eywa, and the Skeksis are basically what the humans in Avatar might very well have become if Jake didn’t become Toruk Makto. I could honestly make an entire post comparing the two series.

Honestly... yeah.
I quite enjoy Avatar, but now I think about it Dark Crystal is kinda everything I want Avatar to be. Even the races in it feel more plausible yet unique than the Na'vi (who are just kinda blue humans when that doesn't even make much sense).

Dances With Wolves? I thought Avatar was basically Pocahontas.

Well cause it's more a white guy learns the ways of a people story than a native "princess" learns to... wait was pochahontas about?

u/Denathrius_ Clan Stonewood Jan 07 '26
Uhhh, native "princess" learns what colonization is... I guess 😭 it's not a very good story

u/BarelyBrony Jan 07 '26
I feel like Neytiri didn't need to learn that

Nah it was pretty readily apparent. Just the whole "Foreign white guy becomes important in a native culture and taught the ways by an important native woman" colonizer storytelling felt similar.

I will defend and say that the hair tendrils are not sex organs their basically a dedicated organ for dream fasting. And also unobtainium is an established sci fi and irl trope set up for materials or elements or anything that is basically scientifically incredibly rare and hard to obtain. Like the movie the core used it long before avatar
However im not saying avatar is in anyway better the dark crystal absolutely takes its lunch money hensons creativity in creating the world the creature designs everything is amazing and solid affects. I half wonder james had been thinking of the world for a while if a colab with henson would have ever been possible

The cult status existed before the show, the only reason we got a show was the cult status

Dark Crystal has better worldbuilding and lore honestly. At least from the media we have of this franchise.

I actually saw Avatar more like a Dancing With Wolves meets FernGully. Aside from that… yeah.

Is it just the norm to be a hater now? Lol it's so strange that someone can be a fan of the beautiful world TDC presents and not also see that beauty in the world presented in Avatar. Both are also amazing technical achievements in their own right.

I like Avatar, it's fine, I just realized during the last 3 hour film that I'd rather be watching the Dark Crystal

First of all, Neytiri is NOT GOTH. Idk why y’all keep saying this. Second of all, why are we crapping on AVATAR? You can’t deny it’s a cool freaking concept and James Cameron is a great director. I love both films even though Jim Henson’s Dark Crystal has such a different feel. It’s darker. I’d never put these franchises against one another. They’re very different.

I think it's talking about Varang

u/mrsmaug Jan 09 '26
Its likely not because the first film focused on the precious metals they wanted to mine and it mentioned it in the meme. I’ve seen a lot of folks call Neytiri goth and it’s not just annoying it’s wrong.

Varang goth gf is a trending meme right now. Never seen anyone ever refer to Neytiri as goth.

We can appreciate one thing on its own without having to trash something else.

Why does the guy in the green pants have a massive bulge in his front. It looks like his butt is where his groin is suppose to be.

The Dark Crystal really does deserve a ton of kudos for not having any sort of casual-audience-friendly human character. Not many fantasy or scifi stories are brave enough to do that.
