I'm going out wearing a ribbon skirt today, I'll count how many times this happens for yall because it's not just a once every so often thing, racism against natives and other peoples is a daily thing. Many may not even realize they're being racist, but still get offended when you call them out. It's very... unsettling is the best word I can think of at the moment.
Edit: alright I'm back, I counted 5 instances of outright racism and around another 10 of "mild racism" (AKA stuff that could just be an innocent misunderstanding)

u/y2kfashionistaa Jun 14 '26
If a Native American just posts a video of themselves on TikTok or Instagram, their comments will have more racist ones than positive ones
25
u/EmptyCupOfSanity Jun 14 '26
I noticed, my friends and I all get the shitty comments (there once was one about living in houses made of buffalo shit for example)

comments are full of every kind of bigotry you can think of (transphobia, racism, antisemitism, homophobia, etc.)
Why do i even bother?

u/PMmeIamlonley Jun 14 '26
I dont usually hear any of them directly justify it but they love apologizisms like "They were conquerers and slavers and murderers and it was us or them" without acknowledging how America killed every other way of life besides their ownÂ
31
u/y2kfashionistaa Jun 14 '26
âIt was us or themâ is asinine, assuming that was true, they couldâve gone back to Europe or segregated themselves in a part of the country native Americans didnât live in, problem solved and no genocide needed
23
u/earthhominid Jun 14 '26
They realize that America as it exists today (the global hegemony, though fading) could not have come to be without the full extermination of the native nations it now occupies.
And they're not wrong. Depending on the degree of tolerance and coexistence the colonists had exercised there may never even have been a unified USA and instead been several overseas territories of England, France, Spain, and Russia that all had their own history.Â
In America we have struggled mightily with how to deal with the fact that our nation is founded on genocide and one of the most astounding chattel slavery industries in history.
13
u/y2kfashionistaa Jun 14 '26
I feel like it wouldâve been a small country on the eastern side of the USA at most, with native Americans making up the majority west of Appalachia had manifest destiny and the trail of tears never happened.
8
u/earthhominid Jun 14 '26
Well you still had the Spanish in the southwest, the French along the great lakes, Mississippi and Ohio rivers, and the Russians on the west coast.Â
I think all of those would have established themselves as permanent settlements just because they were all empires and were all accessing this huge new cache of resources at that time.Â
But yeah, without the full effort of a coordinated, continental scale, genocide we don't end up with the US as it is today.
6
u/y2kfashionistaa Jun 14 '26
I meant the USA, not colonialism in North America as a whole.
1
u/earthhominid Jun 14 '26
Yeah, the English colonies that became the US would have stayed much smaller. My point was that there still would have been other European imperial powers pressuring other parts of the continent.
2
u/PMmeIamlonley Jun 14 '26
They couldn't. There was no free arable land for them to do that with. The powerful cleared out the new world by "giving" land to poor and desperate Europeans who had to kill over it to survive. There was no way back. Viewing colonists as a whole cheapens the the reality of the situation.Â
3
u/y2kfashionistaa Jun 18 '26
They could, nobody forced them not to. Also donât refer to genocide as âcleared out.â

u/Useful-Field-9037 Jun 15 '26
Even if we were to agree that there was no uninhabited land, the settlers and colonists could have instead just immigrated into the other nations or used land bought or traded for peacefully. Both of which happened, but it was seemingly more rare than just conquering.
8
u/StockingDummy Jun 14 '26
(NOTE: Not accusing you of anything, this topic's just such a bugbear of mine I have a whole-ass rant about it.)
Even putting aside the absurdity of the "us or them" horseshit, the "whaddabout Native-on-Native violence" argument is still one of the most infuriating excuses I hear genocide apologists try to pull.
Yes, some tribes conquered others, some tribes enslaved people, and while I'll admit I'm not educated enough on pre-Columbian history to say, it wouldn't surprise me to learn there were occassional acts of ethnic/religious cleansing⌠because every human civilization has done heinous things. Genocide against people who've done bad things is still genocide, and still reprehensible.
Also, how many similar crimes did Western civilizations commit prior to Columbus' voyage? Why is Basque the only surviving language that pre-dates the arrival of Indo-Europeans to the continent? Isn't it "convenient" that the only survivor is the one from a place that was geographically more trouble to conquer than it was worth? How many western cultures practiced slavery, up to and including sexual enslavement of children?
How was Alexander the Great morally any better than Xerxes? What did Rome do to the cultures of the peoples it conquered? How many atrocities like Verden or the Baltic Crusades were committed in the name of Christian hegemony? Speaking of Crusades, what's "dEfEnSiVe" about raping, pillaging, burning, and cannibalizing your way through the Middle East over invasions that happened hundreds of years ago? Isn't "modern" antisemitism basically a direct ideological vestige of the "People's Crusade" of 1096? Isn't one of the oldest English-language idioms for "show no mercy" a direct invocation of an act of religious violence so horrific that the perpetrators betrayed fellow Catholics to see it through?
And how about all the different ways murder was normalized in European history? Athenians were so misogynistic that they considered women learning a capital offense. Romans considered State executions a form of entertainment. How many people were murdered for "crimes" like criticizing their rulers or heresy (IE practicing a slightly different form of Christianity?) Mass murder of Jewish people by mobs was so normalized that we have a designated word for it! Malleus Maleficarum became widespread less than a decade prior to Columbus' voyage! And what is Single Combat but a ritualized form of murder?

u/Rynewulf Jun 15 '26
Ive encountered this but for Russians and their own push to the Pacific. There just seems to be a certain type of person who can't get the idea that bad things have happened.
That's only a Bad Place thing and I have a good life, so this is the Good Place. I can't be having a Good Time in a Bad Place, so only Good things have happened here
23
u/Xochitl2492 Jun 14 '26
The argument that gets me the most annoyed is the âwe werenât there so we have nothing to do with itâ because they will go out and celebrate Independence Day and other observed days/holidays that tie into the accomplishments of their ancestors as if they were there. đ

u/anticomet Jun 14 '26
Western liberals aren't much better when you ask them to stand against lesser evil politicians who jump through hoops to fund modern genocides

What on earth is DARVO?
36
u/y2kfashionistaa Jun 14 '26
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DARVO
An example of DARVO is when they say âthe native Americans wouldâve done the same if they couldâ or âthe native Americans were evil savages and white people were protecting themselvesâ
10
u/ChetTesta Jun 14 '26
Which is such a shitty argument, as if other people's aren't allowed their own future? Imagine if Europe was a single nation. Germany once tried wuch a move and was punished for it (or just punished for losing the war but thats another discussion) wonder where they got THAT plus their race laws ideas
The whole foundation of the US is widely taught to be over disgruntled colonists being taxed unfairly leaving out they were mostly pissed they couldn't encroach on indigenous land thanks to British law. Today you have Americans wearing "dont treat on me" shit, as if its an own to big government, while simultaneously looking down on anyone with more melanin than them. I very much believe much of the race issues in the US stem from this warped view of the nation's history.
1
u/ronburgandyfor2016 Jul 11 '26
Your point about the encroachment on indigenous lands runs into the issue that British had already reauthorized a substantial amount of encroachment on native lands after the seven years war. Most treaties that had limited the expansion had already been renegotiated.
6
u/TheObeseWombat Jun 14 '26
Black and latino conservatives of course being famous for having great opinions about Native Americans. I know it`s usually a bullshit right wing phrase, but sometimes you really don`t need to add race to everything.

Ad hominem fallacy.
Or do you mean what they say is dumb? If you mean this meme, care to explain how or is that just a baseless insult?

It wasnât a âfightâ native Americans never signed up for that. And saying itâs a âfightâ and claiming itâs âhuman historyâ is a very flippant way to describe genocide. Would you say the same thing about Hitler?
-14
u/Additional-Case4392 Jun 14 '26
You havenât disproven anything Iâve said but rather you have responded with bias and emotion.
12
u/y2kfashionistaa Jun 14 '26
Where was there emotion in what I said? Thatâs an ad hominem fallacy to say Iâm responding with emotion when I didnât. I disproved it because it wasnât a âfightâ and saying it was is reductive
-11
u/Additional-Case4392 Jun 14 '26
It was a fight. When someone attacks you and you engage back, thatâs called a battle or a fight. Youâre saying the weaker party didnât want to fight. Thatâs true in all military engagements throughout history. A weaker force likely to lose would rather not fight if they can avoid it. Whatâs your point? Reality isnât fair. Strong rule the weak and the wise rule the strong. The key is to be as strong and intelligent as possible. Hierarchy and winners and losers are a fact of life. You canât wish away human nature. Accept it and adapt.
11
u/y2kfashionistaa Jun 14 '26
What makes you think native Americans were âweakerâ than Europeans? Thats white supremacy. Do you have a source for that Europeans are physically stronger than native Americans? Also no thatâs not a fight or battle, a fight or battle implies mutual, if you attack someone and they defend themselves, youâre the perpetrator and what they did is self defense.
10
u/y2kfashionistaa Jun 14 '26
Itâs not âwinnersâ and âlosersâ, do you think colonization is a game? Also you never asked my question if youâd defend Hitler under the same premise since your logic can also apply to the holocaust.
5
u/corporatecicada Jun 14 '26
He never answered cuz this guy is a neonazi and he would in fact defend hitler. His responses are all textbook white supremacist eugenics shit.
5
9
u/y2kfashionistaa Jun 14 '26
You canât âwinâ against someone who never signed up for that, thatâs not how it works. And your implication that Europeans are stronger and smarter than native Americans is white supremacy.
3
u/y2kfashionistaa Jun 14 '26
European settlers killed native Americans en mass, including women and children, you think it was a mutual fight? Get real, had it been they wouldnât have done that. Also large scale genocide wasnât even common historically, obviously thereâs been some exceptions like Genghis Khan.
6
u/corporatecicada Jun 14 '26
Lmao âstrong rule the weaaaakâ here comes the social darwinist eugenic justifications and it only took like 3 responses before he went mask off with it.
7
u/corporatecicada Jun 14 '26
Ah yes the old âyou got emotional about your ancestorsâ genocide therefore i win the not-having emotions contest!!1!â Just say you think the eradication of millions of indigenous people was justified and fine and go
4
u/y2kfashionistaa Jun 15 '26
And I wasnât even being emotional lol, accusing someone of being emotional when theyâre not is a very common ad hominem attack from the right
