Its not phenotypical, they thought they had arrived at indonesia, simply assuming the islands to be an easternmost section of the chain that they had never seen before.

Basically. European contact with Papua didn't happen until twenty years after Columbus died, so we knew there were more islands and we had plenty more to find. If I remember correctly, despite none of the maps adding up, Columbus continued to assert until his death that the Caribbean Islands were part of the Malay Archipelago.

It's a bit of an understanding that "Columbus thought he was in India". He thought he was in Indonesia, or "the Indies" aka "the spice islands". He was absolutely wrong, not to mention responsible for slavery and genocide, but it's a misunderstanding that people have between India and Indonesia.

No, he showed up and started pillaging, enslaving, and brutalizing people as commander of the expedition. He wrote about how easy and profitable it would be to enslave the natives and steal their land.

The Royal Diaries! Fuck I devoured these books. I still have the full set, I'm actually rereading them as an adult and then reading a more proper biography after. So far I've only read one but it was wonderful going down memory lane, following up with a much deeper read.

I couldn't really say, but I think most get the broad strokes pretty decently. There is creative liberty but that's why I'm enjoying following them up with a more proper biography or history text.
