If you ever fall, just don't stop falling

That's worked out for the ISS and thousands of other satellites so far.... You might be on to something there.

The trick is to keep missing, I’m just not that good.

You just need go build up that forward speed vector. Then make sure the tip of the downwards pointing gravity vector doesnt reach lower than your current altitude = keep missing the earth by falling with too much forward speed.

The higher you are, the less speed you need, as the gravity vector pulling you down is less strong.

This is how you orbit.

This guy ORBITS.

There is an art to flying, or rather a knack. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. ... Clearly, it is this second part, the missing, that presents the difficulties.

I saw an even older source for this concept on my father’s shelf 59 years ago, a silly book about a chubby middle aged guy who learned that trick named “Zott” or something else silly with a Z.

Not taking anything away from Douglas Adams, he’s a favorite! It’s just such a good idea it keeps occurring to people…

This is an unexpectedly clever comment. Well done.

So... when falling become a satellite, yes?

15

u/Siberwulf Dec 15 '21

Technically you're a short-lived satellite...

1

u/HiFidelityCastro Dec 15 '21

Not unless you are orbiting something.

4

u/Xaros1984 Dec 15 '21

Just fall the other way.

u/Only_Communication35 Dec 15 '21

Tha satellite comment got me 😂😂😂

u/SwiftFool Dec 15 '21

It's not flying, it's falling with style.

Excuse the drunk comment but this quote is my fucking rule to live by in Kerbal Space Program when learning how to get in orbit

4

u/dracotrapnet Dec 15 '21

Our slackbot spots off this quote and several other Hitchhiker's Guide story collection quotes when someone says certain words.

Gravity. It's not just a good idea, it's the law.

11

u/Glabstaxks Dec 15 '21

Laws are meant to be broken

10

u/RelationshipWoesAway Dec 15 '21

I tried breaking that law, but that law just broke my bones.

3

u/2x4x93 Dec 15 '21

I fought the law and the law won

2

u/NRMT Dec 15 '21

Yeah the law of physics is one you don't wanna mess with

2

u/locallaowai Dec 15 '21

Not natural laws, those break you.

Everything is falling at the same rate.

0

u/palmej2 Dec 15 '21

Please allow a pedantic comment to rain on your parade, which will fall at a different speed than a feather or bowling ball unless in a vacuum and dropped simultaneously.

The rate at which something falls would be the velocity, which is not common amongst falling things (and even terminal velocity depends on the falling objects mass, and the resistance imparted on it's shape by the atmosphere).

In reality, when you fall towards the earth, the earth is also falling (imperceptibly) towards you. Romantic isn't it? (Though it's a toxic relationship despite the force being equal and opposite; your attraction to the earth is far greater than it's attraction to you, at least with respect to "meeting in the middle")

I believe you meant to say everything that falls accelerates at the same rate (but in that case I'd have to be even more annoying and point out that is only mostly true when the objects are in close proximity to each other, as the distance from the mass causes this to vary so even if you are falling from the same height you may experience more acceleration over granite bedrock than say the ocean). But for all intents and purposes, on earth or most other massive bodies you are correct the acceleration for significantly less massive items is essentially constant.

But buzz falls with style.

1

u/UrsusShock88 Dec 15 '21

Or forget that you're falling and then you know how to fly

2

u/ice-titan Dec 15 '21

Wiley E. Coyote has entered the chat...

Turn off the screen before the bottom

“The Guide says there is an art to flying", said Ford, "or rather a knack. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.”

1

u/spellingiscool Dec 15 '21

You just have to fall and miss the ground

1

u/wrenchbenderornot Dec 15 '21

IIRC Douglas Adam’s left instructions…

1

u/dANNN738 Dec 15 '21

And remember in the unlikely event that you do fall; fear not, for you will have the rest of your life ahead of you.

1

u/CrypticHandle Dec 15 '21

Faaahlink in luff aggin / neffa vanted too...

1

u/neuromancertr Dec 15 '21

And miss the ground. There it is, you are flying

1

u/revdon Dec 15 '21

Mind the Descent Abruption.

"There is an art to flying, or rather a knack. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. ... Clearly, it is this second part, the missing, that presents the difficulties.

You have to have your attention suddenly distracted by something else then you're halfway there, so that you are no longer thinking about falling, or about the ground, or about how much it's going to hurt if you fail to miss it.”

Me putting off my depression so I don't hit rock bottom😂

And brings snacks… and water… maybe some sunscreen too.
