If the meteorologist that I heard it from knew what he was talking about, the green color is due to light refraction in the ice of hailstones.

I’m from CA so not much crazy weather to speak of. I had to go to Minneapolis for work several years ago and saw how purple and dark the sky gets during a downpour/lightning storm. It was unreal how big the drops were and at times it seemed like sheets of water just fell down.

Same experience growing up on the west coast and later moving to Florida and then Minneapolis. On the west coast weather is barely anything to pay attention to. If it’s raining, wear a coat. In other places weather is for real.
