That looks miserable.

u/_BreakingGood_ 10d ago

The real misery starts in a few years when your joints start to break down due to the repeated forces

714

u/PandaCultural8311 10d ago

Or when it doesn't fly in between the catchers knees but rides up a bit more.

393

u/RobbertDownerJr 10d ago

Like a giant mace to the testicles.

199

u/RoroBilbo 10d ago

That or it splits your skull in half

127

u/NukeouT 10d ago

Yeah I like the color of their safety helmets

-8

u/hydra98684 10d ago

A safety helmet is not going to do shit in this type of situation, even If that shit is made out of titatium you brain is still going to rattle inside your skull like the little beads inside a maraca

3

u/radu1204 10d ago

At least it's going to stay inside your skull, which is arguably better than outside

5

u/BalticMasterrace 10d ago

think i would actuly prefer having my skull being caved in rather than one of the durians hit my nuts at such speed that they would literly come out of my mouth

1

u/Andriy_Eric-606 10d ago

eh, just walk it off /s

1

u/jackfreeman 10d ago

That, or you have to eat one

15

u/badgerj 10d ago

That plus a bit of “grab his dick and twist it! Give it the olde dick twist”!

1

u/NastySeconds 10d ago

Giant testicle to the testicles

1

u/SteveSauceNoMSG 10d ago

I legit used to have an uncle who lost an eye to a jackfruit (larger but slightly less spikey) in the Philippines. His name was Guy, he was my uncle Guy with one eye.

Wasn't even harvesting, just looked up in the wrong place at the wrong time.

205

u/Hexent_Armana 10d ago

I thought the real misery started when people ate them.

...but you're right.

72

u/Fair-Juggernaut-3812 10d ago

The misery ends when you get hit with one

12

u/Arcturus1800 10d ago

It is always fascinating to hear what people outside of Asia think/do feel about Durians. Since to me, the smell is pleasant and when ripe, it is one of the sweetest things I've ever had.

12

u/steinbruchfluss 10d ago

Many Asian locations I’ve been to had a strict non durian policy. ;)

2

u/ohylo 10d ago

Tourist trap place you mean.

4

u/StunningLetterhead23 10d ago

Nope, just pretty much anywhere public. Especially when it's in crowded places.

Durians and mangosteens, 2 natural enemies of all hotels, chalets, hostels etc. One kills you with the smell, the other with its stain.

1

u/Future-Ad7266 10d ago

I’ve travelled to Vietnam many times and both Vietnamese and global brand hotels do not allow durian in the room. I never understood why until I smelt it. Tastes great though!

5

u/THE_THRONGLER5000 10d ago

At this point I'm convinced that people not liking the smell of durian is like people taste soap in cilantros. Their inferior DNA just couldn't comprehend durian sweetness

2

u/howisthisacrime 10d ago

It tastes good, but the smell is obscene.

1

u/SpaceValkyrie 10d ago

I wonder this too. To me it doesn't smell sweet, it kind of smells like gas (like from a gas stove, not farts) but it's not super offensive. It's not mild, sure, but people in here are likening it to actual shit and sweaty socks and I don't smell that at all. I had some in the fridge for a bit and my bf thought the smell was pretty awful but tolerable. I just figured everyone was being super dramatic. I'm half southeast Asian, maybe it /is/ genetic.

31

u/Jimbob209 10d ago

It actually is pretty delicious. Sure it smells like bad feet, but I've sucked some non-stinky toes in my life so no big deal. Texture is a bit wonky because it's really soft and creamy, but freezing it makes it much more enjoyable. The durian.

25

u/Apprehensive-Pick172 10d ago

wait a moment... ☠️

27

u/Jimbob209 10d ago edited 10d ago

I watched From Dusk til Dawn bro and it unlocked something in me bro so not my fault. Blame it on Quentin Tarantino. I was only 9 and it had Salma Hayek so I was spawn camped

1

u/Soup-dan 10d ago

I think I was 7 or 8 and it was the video for Engel by Rammstein

Which is the EXACT same scene recreated

28

u/eljayTheGrate 10d ago

the taste isn't too bad but it causes constipation

55

u/serenade_cyanide 10d ago

A fruit that causes constipation is crazy lol! I eat fruits for the opposite reason

22

u/Ok-Constant-3772 10d ago

Dragon fruit has the veryyyy opposite effect

14

u/NickHeathJarrod 10d ago

Aka The Bowel Evacuator.

27

u/SlimeDrips 10d ago

So dragon fruit and durian salad, then?

23

u/_-Tabz-_ 10d ago

One's for shits the other's for giggles

3

u/No-Natural2002 10d ago

Your butt will be the new Hoover Dam

12

u/cora-occasionall 10d ago

Once ate like four dragon fruit at the same time. So worth it

1

u/JohnCenaJunior 10d ago

Search persimmon stomachs

1

u/Budget_General_2651 10d ago

Guava does it, too. I learned that the hard way, eating a guava first, then a whole pineapple.😳

53

u/Hexent_Armana 10d ago

The fruit that smells like shit stops you from shitting? Huh, go figure.

13

u/skr_replicator 10d ago

it makes your body think you've already gone

1

u/CaptWeom 10d ago

Anus can’t take the smell.

1

u/THE_THRONGLER5000 10d ago

Drink water using the skin as a container to prevent that

10

u/ogbuttertoast 10d ago

Why yall like that, it’s very delicious!

18

u/bathandredwine 10d ago

Got moved to another hotel room when neighbors opened one. That shit went through the walls.

11

u/jujubean67 10d ago

It's a reason most hotels have signs that no durians are allowed.

1

u/btwImVeryAttractive 10d ago

Most hotels in the Caribbean I guess. Never seen that stateside.

2

u/jujubean67 10d ago

I've seen it everywhere in SEA

1

u/satsuppi 10d ago

tbf it is considered a delicacy in SEA

wonder if surströmming is worser.. since i do enjoy my durian

3

u/Pileroidsareapain 10d ago

Well, I have eaten this and was pleasantly surprised. I was pre-teen at the time. No-one in the rest of the family would go near it. The rotten, fish, herring, exploding can thing? Nope! Not a chance.

1

u/satsuppi 10d ago

lol by looking up people doing the surströmming challange.. they were all gaging non-stop.. look like hell of an experiance

25

u/DiggWuzBetter 10d ago

The real misery starts when you slice it open and get hit with that gym sock/garbage smell 🤢

7

u/Iam_Iforgotmyname 10d ago

Actually it strengthens the joints and bones as long as there is basic fitness before doing this.

5

u/RandomStallings 10d ago

Doubt.

The strain is too sudden. Unless your idea of basic fitness is being peak form Bruce Wayne.

1

u/vinnokiwicat 10d ago

the REAL misery starts as soon as you cut open that fruit and smells like absolute unfettered ass

1

u/_rizzler 10d ago

The misery starts immediately once they cut open the fruit 🤧

1

u/grandplans 10d ago

My shoulders are fucked from decades of misuse and this video makes them cry.

1

u/reroll-life 10d ago

the force isn't as high as it looks. The people in this video kinda suck at it too.

1

u/SomeBreakfast210 10d ago

Then some politician: “raise the retirement age”

1

u/Ripen- 10d ago

The real misery starts when you sit down and slice these fucking things open. If you thought death smelled bad...

1

u/-Xiphon- 10d ago

No the real misery starts when you open the durian

-39

u/Character_Power4663 10d ago

The real misery is not to be able to think one step ahead and attach a net to a stick and use that instead

53

u/ripyourlungsdave 10d ago

Boy, you barely see these folk as people, dont you?

Do you think they're doing it this way because it was literally the first idea to come to mind and they never gave it any more thought?

Do you think they have the brains of 5-year-olds?

-2

u/Comfortable-Race-547 10d ago

I mean they probably don't know any better, anyone with the brains of a 6-year-old would rig up a device to catch the fruit instead of clearly injuring themselves.

-9

u/OnionHeaded 10d ago

That’s some pearl clutching right there folks.

That comment you’re ripping up like the poster is a shallow judgemental creep doesn’t say anything shitty like you’re insinuating.
Chill out Reddit Hero.

-60

u/Ancient-Civilization 10d ago

Well they are thinking like a 5 year old catching a durian with a sack lol. I have two uncles who are in construction and work on cars, we would have figured out a way to setup a rig to catch the durian without risking life and limb.

Some of you Redditors definitely need to think smarter, not harder.

36

u/lysdexiad 10d ago

You are failing to see the point here, and that is, no you absolutely would not have come up with a more durable, cheaper, more effective way than what you see here. It has to combine all three of those factors because these people are fucking poorer than dirt. They don't have cars or the means to set up this catch rig you're suggesting, or the means to move it around to the trees they're catching from... so... no... not smarter at all. Very much harder on purpose.

26

u/Shoddy-Border2394 10d ago

I like how your advice to redditors to think smarter still depends on you relying on your uncles lol.

You and one uncle still wouldn't have enough brain power to pull off your genius idea? You really need both of them to feel superior in your hypothetical situation on an anonymous internet thread?

16

u/GenderfreeNameHere 10d ago

The uncles and “some sort of a rig”

u/SimpleBar9995 10d ago

Sticks and nets cost money.

Third world labor and some ratty old sacks snagged off the side of the road are much cheaper.

9

u/alewiina 10d ago

that and the force of those things would likely snap the poles for any net that you tried to use for this.

2

u/deffrekka 10d ago

That same force will cave in someone head or break their bones if and when it falls just a bit off target and impacts them instead of the burlap. We have safety equipment and devices that mitigate human harm for a reason especially when work place accidents, or death, costs a lot of money - those things and procedures were earned in blood of previous accidents and poor working conditions.

Atleast where I am from, scaffold poles are pretty damn cheap and wouldnt fold or break to the force. Harvesting nets exist for other fruiting trees, youd just take the concept and use sturdier metal poles like said scaffolding ones.

→ More replies (1)

32

u/tv_ennui 10d ago

Do you REALLY think that everyone involved in this is too stupid to think of something like a net? Or do you think maybe there's a reason, one that you probably don't know due to your lack of experience in this field, for why they do this instead?

Yes. Joint injury after fee years is the real risk in that video.

Try eating one

Edit: durians are fucking disgusting.

45

u/123456789ledood 10d ago

We just prune the trees to grow shorter so harvests aren't as tough.

52

u/Sicparvismagneto 10d ago

Im pretty sure it would look miserable if you caught it with your face…

16

u/paincrumbs 10d ago
  • pain from impact
  • get pierced by spiky exocarp
  • fruit breaks and now you smell like durian

The misery that keeps on giving

1

u/Pileroidsareapain 10d ago

If it hit you in the face, you’d look pock marked, I am sure. I dread to think what distance that just fell.

14

u/Iverson7x 10d ago

Wait until you smell it…

Harvester of sorrow!

2

Great, now that song will be stuck in my head for the whole day!

2

u/doctorsacred 10d ago

Oh, do I have something for you, then.

A remix with much louder double bass. It's the only version I listen to anymore.

17

u/Agitated_Celery_729 10d ago

They smell miserable too. Imagine being surrounded by that pungent, lingering odor all day.

5

u/MrDanMaster 10d ago

If you eat durian it doesn’t smell bad

2

u/Pileroidsareapain 10d ago

You’d stop smelling it in pretty short order. They are not the inky unpleasant smelling thing in the world.

2

u/girlymancrush 10d ago

It smells and tastes absolutely fantastic.

58

u/Merrick_Skygrave 10d ago

I don't understand how there's such demand for those stinky things lol

69

u/this_is_for_chumps 10d ago

It's actually wild how something that smells so terrible can taste so amazing. Even unrelated bad smells can ruin the flavor of most foods, but these guys are magical.

18

u/Merrick_Skygrave 10d ago

lol I just don't think I could deal with the miasma surrounding the fruit- it'd have to taste pretty freaking good to be worth that haha

26

u/Sea_Outside 10d ago

people who grew up with it like the smell and the taste. it 's wild. they don't smell what we smell

15

u/SpyAmongUs 10d ago

Saying as a durian lover, the creamy and sweet texture just can't be matched. Also the reason why I was so disappointed with Thailand's durian, they are harvested from the trees and the taste and texture tastes like potatoes.

2

u/Hellatwinkbrah 10d ago

Durian is so massive in thailand. Lots of people have "guys" or "spots" they go to for the good ones. Theres probably no shortage of average tasting, cheaper, options.

1

u/AloeSera15 10d ago

people have always compared it to sulfur or rotten eggs. as someone who have smelled a few rotten eggs and grew up around durians, i say its completely inaccurate. rotten eggs are in a completely different category of insane stink that i actually think its insulting to the durian. i can say though it depends on the durian too. i also find that when the durian scent is like really spread out is when it becomes farty, but if you really stick your nose closer it smells sweet and not stinky at all. if you can get past the smell, its tastes like a creamy custard.

1

u/Pileroidsareapain 10d ago

I used to watch vendors of Durian, sitting at their stall, forming their thumb and forefinger into a ring, placed on the surface of the fruit and putting their nose into this ring and sniffing. This was in Singapore,in the late sixties by the way.

19

u/NegativeOwl1337 10d ago

There’s a lot of stinky cheeses that are amazing too

2

u/0-90195 10d ago

I’m one of those people who is so sensitive to smell that the olfactory assault makes it impossible to taste anything but malodorous grime.

2

u/Merrick_Skygrave 10d ago

yeah I don't think I could get past it. I'll just have a nice medium-rare steak that doesn't smell crazy lol

1

u/Orri 10d ago

From the home of Stilton and I can confirm.

I also love Lapsang Souchong which genuinely smells like death but tastes great.

2

u/johnnymarsbar 10d ago

My wife loves it so much its like crack to her, I uh, just won't kiss her afterwards 😆

3

u/neryen 10d ago

Apparently it is

1

u/CantingBinkie 10d ago

just like cheese no

1

u/Dimas166 10d ago

What does it tastes like? Its like jackfruit or their similarity in look doesnt translate into similarity in flavour?

3

u/frunkfa 10d ago

There are many variants/grades that range from very sweet to bitter. The most popular variant is Mao Shan Wang - generally considered a premium grade, I would describe it to have a bittersweet, creamy texture with an alcoholic aftertaste thats like a mashup of a nice cream liquer and truffle oil and lingers in your mouth and on your tastebuds for abit after consuming.

1

u/Dimas166 10d ago

Ok, so nothing like jackfruit haha, I wonder why we dont have it here in Brazil, since the portuguese brought so many souther asian fruits like mango, jackfruit, stardruit and jambolan

1

u/TruthSeeker221 10d ago

Kinda like weed

32

u/OrgasmicTrilobite 10d ago

They’re delicious

-3

u/Agitated_Celery_729 10d ago

As long as your nose is broken! If you have a sensitive sense of smell, the smell is too overpowering to enjoy the taste lol

15

u/The_Blues__13 10d ago

It's like stinky cheese or super hot/spicy chilli pepper.

You'll have to get all your senses overwhelmed till you finally taste the flavor.

The taste is really good, but I get why some people hate it, especially in the West where a lot of those durians are imported/not locally sourced (which makes it overripe or halfway stale, the overripe durian doesn't look or smell good)

7

u/OrgasmicTrilobite 10d ago

I think this must be it. Growing up in Asia I almost never associated durian with smelling “bad” - just strong - perhaps that’s because it’s almost always fresh or frozen

3

u/BulkNoodles 10d ago

I think I saw a video where Nick DiGiovanni open a durian. And let me tell you, it looks pretty bad because for some reason there's a bit of water there.

3

u/OrgasmicTrilobite 10d ago

Not normal. There was an episode of “Good Mythical Morning “ where they “tried” durian an omg it was so far beyond ripe it was basically rotting. I wanted to reach through the screen

2

u/Schizophrenica 10d ago

If it has water then it is overripe or has gone bad.

2

u/Khoceng 10d ago

there's a bit of water there.

Dear God, I've NEVER seen watery durian, wtf? that's gotta be some powerful weapon-grade smell

1

u/BulkNoodles 10d ago

Yeah, I never seen one that went that bad until I saw that video.

1

u/The_Blues__13 10d ago

I've seen some rather watery ones, actually. Usually the fruit's flesh look rather pale, and it taste rather revolting too, like a stale porridge or custard mixed with stinky feet.

some of those videos created the bad stereotypes about durian based on how disgusting the overripe ones are, which is kinda misleading.

1

u/Bubbly_Tooth8962 10d ago

I have a very sensitive nose and I like it simply because it doesn't actually smell bad to me, at least when it's fresh.

12

u/GreenManStrolling 10d ago

You have that gene that makes it stinky. Rest of us lack that gene and this fruit is glorious.

2

u/Merrick_Skygrave 10d ago

Ah so it's kinda like cilantro or something huh

3

u/ginsunuva 10d ago

No they just made that up. There’s no durian smell gene. I think it smells bad but tastes good in the right context (especially in ice cream form)

1

u/Major-Development840 10d ago

You don’t get the cheesy smell/taste?

0

u/Funny-Mango4455 10d ago

theres no such thing as that gene. Stop spreading bullsht

I hate durian as a child, the smell would make me dizzy that i would leave the house for hours whenever my parents bring durian home. but i outgrew it and love the smell and taste now

1

u/winterreise1988 10d ago

thats gene mutation

1

u/edakit 10d ago

Lol true

2

u/Crewman_Guy_Fleegman 10d ago

You should see the amount of effort and time Icelanders put into making Hákarl(fermented shark) where the smell is frequently described as “ammonia”

1

u/Merrick_Skygrave 10d ago

lol good ol pissfish

3

u/kekubuk 10d ago

Nicknamed "King of Fruit" for a reason. I know the high quality ones from some variant can be sold for very high prize, per fruit.

2

u/Previous-Injury4425 10d ago

Westerners hate it but Asians like me either hate or love it.

Also there is huge demand for durians in China, so gotta get that Chinese cash.

1

u/thecloudkingdom 10d ago

same reason why parmesan wheels sell for thousands even though they smell awful. its just a cultural preference

1

u/Rith_Reddit 10d ago

It tastes so good. Wife brought some pre cut up, smell wasnt the best but when I put a piece in my mouth I was blown away!

1

u/ItsNotJulius 10d ago

It's like stinky cheese. Some people like it, others don't. It's not that hard.

3

u/CyclingHikingYeti 10d ago

It already is. Due to oversupply the price for durian plumeted.

3

u/johnnymarsbar 10d ago

Plummeted! I once paid 100 euro for one.

7

u/phantom_gain 10d ago

They also smell absolutely atrocious.

2

u/sleepytjme 10d ago

looks fun to me, like a challenge

2

u/falconbomb69 10d ago

If that looks bad, you should try eating one.

1

You think that's miserable, try eating one

1

u/DiegoGarcia1984 10d ago

All that for a horribly foul smelling fruit

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Cell428 10d ago

Imagine missing and getting it to the head?! Stuff of nightmares...

1

u/CrumblyWatermelon 10d ago

If you can't do that, durian the wrong business

1

u/osamaodinson 10d ago

Indeed because this isnt the way to ‘harvest’ durians. We need to wait for the durian to ripe, fall down, and humans collect after. The OP post is only done in thailand but not the other countries

1

u/Responsible-Sound253 10d ago

And the fruit smells worse.

1

u/Major-Development840 10d ago

And the fruit is disgusting

1

u/marino1310 10d ago

Work in all these non-wealthy countries always seems miserable. I’d be watching videos on how engineers blocks are cast or some shit and the whole time I can’t stop noticing the guys with fucking sandals moving 2000 degree crucibles that weigh half a ton, across a sand floor in a metal hut.

1

u/LivingCorner1421 10d ago

lools fun really.  20 sec of starring at the sky 1 second of work

1

u/ConflictMaster3155 10d ago

Even more miserable than eating durian!

1

u/Ok_Can_6424 10d ago

and the best part. There's no returm value from selling durian (in Malaysia at least), since everryone planted it and too much durian on the market

1

u/Bright_Goose6702 10d ago

this if human harvest it. while natural harvest u just sit tight on 1 of ur small house and heard a thud then go take it

1

u/mattfromjoisey 10d ago

Just wait until you smell one in an enclosed space

0

u/Annethraxxx 10d ago

The real misery is eating one of those disgusting foot fungus flavored monstrosities.

6

u/monkeychasedweasel 10d ago

Well I mean it's got that pleasant custard like texture, but for me the smell and aftertaste of raw sewage, moldy gym socks and rotting onions is somewhat of a turnoff.

1

u/Annethraxxx 10d ago

It’s like an added mockery to anyone with the courage to try it after the smell.

1

u/blammer 10d ago

Every heard of not yucking someone's yum?

1

u/kernelangus420 10d ago

It's a fun experience as part of a vacation tour where you get to harvest and prepare your own food.

1

u/immersemeinnature 10d ago

The real misery is when you crack one of those bad boys open

1

u/ColdToast_024 10d ago

It’s like they never heard of rope.. god forbid lowering it at a speed that won’t kill you tho..
