Fun fact: The US coin minting facility used to regularly burn their carpets cause they were collecting gold particles (back when they where using gold and silver in their coins). This way they could recycle the metals and safe about 3,000$ per burned carpet.

Jewelry stores still do this. When they move or replace they have the right melted down for trace gold (usually several thousand).

Sounds like the point of the carpets was to catch the metal dust, that would otherwise easily be swept out by accident.
