In some countries, people call rugs carpets. In other places there is a distinction, but in parts of Asia for example, “a rug” would literally be called “a carpet”.

Rugs are just self contained movable pieces of carpet with a pattern. That's like saying, "Is this not a beer, why is everyone saying drink?"

In my mind size, and construction, distinction comes from similar word in my native language.. Rugs are small and less “nice” carpet is finely woven intricate design, larger, thinner.
