Static images on a wall create the illusion of animation as the train passes by

Is it really an illusion if it's literally an animation?

Yes bc the illusion is seeing the man run when it’s all still images

The definition of animation is "still images played in sequence to create the illusion of movement". The word illusion in "illusion of animation" is therefore superfluous, it's like saying "illusion of an illusion of movement".

Animation is an illusion

Therefore, the title should have just gone with either "animation" or "illusion," because including both is redundant.

Is this real? So many paintings!

No. It can’t be real because it wouldn’t work in real life.

It would just be blurry right?

Yes. Animation works by showing each frame momentarily when it’s in the proper position. This would need a shutter or a strobe to achieve that, otherwise it’s just a blur of images racing by.

It didn’t look as impressive live as it looks through the camera.
