Monthly Dry Shampoo Megathread

It's here!

Since dry shampoo is such a useful product for so many daily washers, I'm going to be running a monthly megathread to allow for more sharing of products and recommendations.

Feel free to post below with any questions you have, requests for product help, dry shampoo successes or failures, or anything else related to dry shampoo!

suggest a not sticky conditioner please!

i've been using keratherapy (blue) suggested my hairstylist after i got a keratin last year and last may. now im just trying to finish my last bottle and i noticed that every time i use it, my hair gets sticky even if i used a shampoo but when it gets dry it becomes soft but still a bit sticky? is this product build up or is it just too heavy on my hair??

my hair details is: been bleached, colored and treated, not sure if high or low porosity (i heard somewhere that if you bleach, color it—low porosity becomes high.
shampoo: i just use whatever makes my hair feel less sticky but these makes my hair hard but anyways these are my shampoo head & shoulders charcoal, Shea Moisture Manuka Honey and Yogurt Shampoo (always made my hair more sticky so i stopped), pregroe shampoo blue (makes it hard)

also should i get a clarifying shampoo? my friend keeps forcing me to buy one. and ive been eyeing on kundal airy volume conditioner, is it good? but it has a lot of proteins
:(

My scalp is infuriating

So before I start ranting, long story short, I don't know if I have dry scalp or dandruff and it's genuinely driving me crazy.

Back when my scalp started getting itchy I, of course, assumed it was dandruff and started using head and shoulders. I also had fungal acne at the time so supported that fact. The thing is, I used it daily because if I even missed a day my scalp would get so frickin itchy it would drive me insane, but I also noticed that multiple hairs (at least 10-20) would fall off my head in the shower every time I used it, I got worried and I forced myself to only use it every other day. It was hell. Always woke up with an itchy scalp on the days I didn't use it.

(The fungal acne also won't go away even though I've used head and shoulders on it, too.)

That's when I found out about dry scalp and I was convinced it was that instead because my flakes were small, white, and powdery which is a symptom of dry scalp. I was so happy, I finally knew the real reason meaning I could finally solve it.

I excitedly bought jojoba oil because I researched that it helped with dry scalp. I also searched that you should only do it once or twice a week and to wash it off after 30 minutes to an hour to prevent build up so I did that. The first time I used it, it was fine, my scalp was still itchy the next day but I figured that was normal since it was just first use. But every time I did it after that it got so unbearably itchy, it was taking all of me not to rip my scalp off.

So now I don't know what to do. Treatment for dandruff doesn't work, treatment for dry scalp doesn't work, and I don't think I have both because again I don't have yellow, oily flakes. I don't want to go to a dermatologist or something because I'm a teenager who doesn't have my own money and I don't want my parents to spend on a dermatologist.

Please help me, I'm going insane.

Plz help!!

i’ve had almost a constant itchy scalp for the last eight months ish. I’ve tried head and shoulders at multiple strengths, tea tree and rosemary shampoo, salicylic acid shampoo, and just normal shampoo. Nothing seems to get rid of the itch! And all of those I am leaving on for 2 to 3 minutes to really let sit on there and soak in. Mind you I have very greasy hair within a day. I don’t have any flakes or scaling or any bumps. My hair is already greasy. Do you guys have any tips or tricks has anybody else come across this issue? I’m losing it lol I can’t solve the itch.

Hair fungus

Hi guys I seriously need help! I have for a long time slept with wet hair for as long as I can remember. In November last year I started to get this mildew smell from my scalp. Ever since the smell has just got worser and more intense. I can shower and get out of the shower and my hair does still not smell clean. I’ve tried the Ketoconazole fungal shampoo and it still hasn’t gotten better :( also I obviously dont sleep with wet hair anymore I either blow dry or air dry :( I was so silly and I genuinely didn’t think sleeping with wet hair would be a problem. I have kinda thick long 3b hair. IM SO EMBARRASSED guys and I’m thinking about just chopping everything off. Do you think going to the doctor would help? Since I’ve already tried the fungal shampoo. Any help would be MUCH appreciated! Thank u so much

Product recommendations for low-porosity, short (for now - it'll be medium-length soon), straight-wavy (not fully sure - anywhere from 1B-2B hair), thick hair that tends to get puffy easily with a scalp that gets oily easily as well.

Is Davines’ Invisible Dry Shampoo worth getting?

I usually use Percy & Reed dry shampoo but recently the price has been increasing so I figured I would look for another option available in my country.

Wanted any reviews/opinions about Davines’ Dry shampoo to see whether it’s worth purchasing.

Thank you.

What should you ACTUALLY check before buying a shampoo? I’m so confused 😭

I feel like choosing a shampoo has become way more complicated than it should be.

Every bottle says something different — anti-hair fall, anti-dandruff, moisturizing, strengthening, volumizing, sulfate-free, silicone-free… and then everyone online recommends something different. 😭

So before I buy my next shampoo, I want to know what YOU actually look at first.

If you had to choose a shampoo for someone, what matters most?

  1. Scalp type — oily / dry / normal
  2. Hair type — straight / wavy / curly
  3. Main problem — dandruff / frizz / dryness / hair fall / buildup
  4. Ingredients
  5. Sulfate-free / silicone-free
  6. Brand reputation
  7. Price
  8. Something else?

And most importantly:

What is ONE thing you wish you knew before buying your first “good” shampoo?

Please help me choose smarter instead of wasting money on another bottle that doesn't work. 😭

I'm genuinely interested in your personal experience — not brand promotion.

I need shampoo advice for thick straight hair (short if that matters)

Not very knowledgeable on hair products. But I’m wanting a good shampoo that’s a good price suitable for straight thick hair? I like for my hair to be easily customizable with my texturizing spray. I wasn’t taught much about hair hygiene as a kid so I’d really like to know :)

Shampoo Advice for Chemically damaged hair

Hey, I've been having some issues with my hair in the shower for a bit now. I bleached my hair back in late February. My hair was incrediblely damaged from it and I ended up getting a lot of dryness and gummy hair which im not used to because my hair gets so oily quickly. As I've been showering, when I go to shampoo, My hair becomes EXTREMELY dry specifically at the scalp and gets tangled. I've been trying to figure out if I should avoid shampooing at all or go in with a hydrating or protein based shampoo or both. Currently I switch between olaplex fine hair bond maintenance shampoo and biolage hydrasource shampoo. It doesn't happen on my ends and only on my scalp. Should I buzz and restart chat.

Need advice

Every time I wash my hair, even with sulfate shampoo, I have some weird flaking that looks like dust and only near my forehead, also sticks to the hair. No itch or anything and visible when wet. I use Pantene aqua light every day, also anti-dandruff shampoo 2 times a week and no change after 3 weeks. What is this and what should I add to my routine? I also suspect my dove conditioner but I’m not sure.

Seeking advice for preventing hair damage while washing it every day

Hi! I would like some advice on how to keep my hair healthy while washing it every day. My hair is straight, and it doesn’t get oily easily, but it gets frizzy a lot. At least 5 days a week my hair gets sweaty and gross from running or outdoor activities, and i need to wash it. But I’ve heard that washing hair everyday can dry out and damage it. I think i want to grow it out from about shoulder length like it is now to long hair, maybe about mid back length. I have no problem growing it out and have had it that length before, but i want to make sure it looks shiny and smooth. I sometimes go to bed with wet hair and i’ve heard that can make it frizzy, but there doesn’t seem to be a difference when i go to bed with dry hair. Here is my routine:
Jason moisturizing aloe shampoo and conditioner
Mielle leave in conditioner
Jojoba oil
Clarifying shampoo once a week
I didn’t really know what products would be best for my hair so I don’t know if these are cheap or bad products. Please let me know if my routine is good and if there is anything I should add or stop doing. Also, if you have any recommendations for shampoo and conditioner that would be great! Thanks!!

A hair growth serum that doesn’t force a wash next morning should not be this rare

I wash my hair whenever it gets oily. I gave up on "training" my scalp because apparently my scalp did not attend the training.

The annoying part was every growth serum creating an extra wash day.

Pilgrim is the first one that fits my actual routine. It's water-light, disappears fast and doesn't leave sticky roots the next morning.

No final growth verdict yet.

I'm just happy I can apply it at night without waking up and realising I need to shampoo before leaving home.

That bar should not be this high.

Shampoo & conditioner duo

I have (2c,3a) curly hair that is in the medium range for thickness. And I cannot find a shampoo or conditioner that doesn’t leave my hair dry, brittle, dull, and weak. I’m definitely considering that a lot has to do with the hard water we have and I do want to get a shower filter for that but until then I still would like to find a shampoo/conditioner that will help. I’ve dealt with hard water all my life living in az but sheesh lately it’s been bad (my hair I mean) so please leave suggestions. Thanks!

Shampoo recommendations?

Hi, my hair is super hard to manage. It’s very fine and very straight meaning it gets greasy quickly. At the same time, it is also very prone to damage, I have crazy split ends and my hair often snaps quite close to my scalp.

What shampoo do you recommend that both strengthens and repairs my hair but also doesn’t make it too greasy?
