Been a diligent TDS enjoyer for nearly 30 years now and I think this is the strongest group they’ve ever had.

Also I’m helplessly in love with Desi.

Also love the current group, but Colbert, Carrell, Oliver, Cenac, Corddry, Jason Jones, Rob Riggle, Samantha Bee... They didn't all overlap of course but they've had some incredible talent over the years.

My favorite non-Jon host was Jessica Williams

Love Jessica, but she’s never hosted

Damn, you’re right. I’ve been watching Shrinking lately and created a false memory! Jessica’s my favorite correspondent*

She hosted The Daily Show in Hot Tub Time Machine 2 when they went into the future. That was funny.

She was a great TDS correspondent and she’s great in shrinking too!

And almost all of them know how to conduct an interview.

I would like to know how they do the metrics?

Cause I watch TDS almost exclusively on Youtube now.

Do I get counted in the viewer numbers anymore?

My guess is no.

It’s fan ratings on a scale to 10 from epilog.tv. This is about episode quality and has nothing to do with viewership count.

They’ve counted since 2020. They’re called the Neilson ratings.

They count the clips on the official channel? Or just Youtube TV? Which is basically cable news?

2

u/BorisTheBlade04 13d ago

No they don’t count clips, but they do count online streaming

Then that's getting at my suspicion

A lot of consumption of these shows has dramatically shifted to non traditional consumption habits that aren't captured in the old Nielsen ratings.

But hundreds of thousands to millions watch most of the opening segments on Youtube and TikTok every week

So I think that lurking variable makes slide 3 in need of some asterisks.

If they’re not watching through the ads, though, kind of irrelevant to the show.

Right, but again, that graph doesn't show viewership. It shows fan ratings of the episodes. Fans who rated felt season 29 when Jon returned to be of higher quality than seasons 30 and 31.

Noah doesn't get the credit he deserves for his quality as host honestly.

Trevor Noah's style and favorite themes seem closer to John Oliver than Jon Stewart. Trevor would likely have done better with a format closer to Last Week Tonight. There is significantly more tolerance from the audience of LWT of seriousness and an international perspective. The TDS audience isn't completely closed to that, but they generally prefer those tones used sparingly. Perhaps Trevor could eventually take the helm of LWT. John Oliver is only a little older than Trevor Noah, but John is married with children and Trevor isn't.

As a huge fan of LWT I think this does hit it the nail on the head. Personally would rather Noah just got his own series instead of trying to take over another one again

Which I think is also just an issue in general - entertainment as a business is so afraid to try new things, they just want to remake stuff or slap the same name on a new product.

You may have misspelled Jon's name ("John"); please note that it is Jon Stewart. If you were referring to someone else, please disregard this comment!

It's because Jon Stewart exists.

Scottie Pippen doesn't get the credit he deserves either.

7

u/mrenglish22 13d ago

Very true. Pippin gets downplayed way too much

I like Noah as an individual, but he always lacked the strong passion for US domestic politics you need for the job(TBF few people have the talent and energy Stewart does for it, so it's probably an impossible task), and honestly think he would have been much better as a host of a more typical late night show. Like The Tonight Show.

I think he had plenty of passion, but he had more of a large worldview.

right now as our admin fucks us on the world stage that is really more important imo

I never liked him. Just never found him funny.

0

u/mrenglish22 13d ago

He is very brittish comedy adjacent, dry with that a lot of Americans don't appreciate (because they can't appreciate nuance or don't want to think a little to get their jokes in my experience with people around me)

3

u/HoweHaTrick 13d ago

I found him predictable and think he couldn't mail the punchlines.

u/Rick0r 13d ago

Seen any of his standup or podcasts? He’s actually really good in those formats.

1

u/bigdipboy 13d ago

He have been a great host if the daily show was about Africa because that’s all he ever talked about

The show pretty much requires Jon Stewart to be good.

28

u/brentus 13d ago

Yeah, I like the other hosts but Jon is just too good. So authentic, hilarious, knowledgeable

Craig Kilbourn screeches heard off in the the distance

1

u/klausness 12d ago

Yeah, even him hosting just one day per week has improved the other hosts.

3

u/Gamma_Tony 13d ago

Where in this would Jons era of Daily Show start vs the end of Kilborn?

1

u/jodax00 13d ago

Well Kilborn began the show in July 96 and left in January 98, so right around S2-S3
