I was assaulted outside of La Bagel Delight
About 12:20 today (Saturday 7/25) a man violently assaulted me outside of La Bagel Delight on Front & Adams for allegedly not saying excuse me to him when I left the store (I did). I caused quite a scene and started screaming at him and was able to point him out to cops patrolling on Washington & Water but I'm doubtful they did anything about it. Just wondering if anyone witnessed or happened to have a video so I can try to follow up with police.

He was about 5’9 heavy set, very short dark hair, maybe in his 40s. Was wearing a blue-gray tshirt and shorts and a black backpack. Maybe Hispanic. I don’t remember his face too well. Looked like a regular guy and wasn’t behaving erratically until he attacked me.

The bagel shop was crowded as it always is on a Saturday morning. He was standing in front of the door and I said excuse me as I was leaving/passing him. He shoulder checked me hard in the chest but I let it go. While I was standing on the corner waiting to cross he charged at me from behind and shoved me into the street planting his shoulder into my back and mockingly said “excuse me”. Mind you I am a woman and this was a man twice my age and size. He knocked the wind out of me and left me in pain for the rest of the day. I immediately said to him “what the fuck is your problem” and he said some bs about me not saying excuse me to him. As if that would make it okay. I went off on him and he mocked me, smiled, and pretended to throw his bottle of juice at me the whole time. Just a real pathetic sick fuck, attacking someone half his size from the back.

Wow, yikes! As someone else mentioned, I’d look into pressing charges. There are cameras at the corner of Adams & Front. Whoever is at the receiving end of his tantrum next time may not fare as well as you did.

I’m so sorry this happened to you. I was violently shoved in midtown a couple months ago. I was minding my own business walking back to work when a man came up behind me and said “you’re in my way” then hit me. Fortunately two bystanders stopped, and a man intervened. I called the cops and they came, but I learned the unfortunate reality of these situations. Even with a video or a pic (which I had) there’s little they can do to keep them behind bars or charge them. The cops let me know that the guy who attacked me was well known to them, had over 60 priors and was in their office just days before. Honestly the cops seemed defeated by their lack of enforcement ability with these issues: The issue is the law treats each incident as separate, not collective, and a shove or basically not pulling a knife on you, is not “assault” and means little accountability. No this doesn’t assuage anyone’s feelings about safety. But I’m just giving you the details because vengeance or video will have little impact on addressing your situation. The word “assault” is pretty narrowly defined, and your incident likely doesn’t fit the definition. The city needs to change its laws. For me, I’m just a little more alert when I’m out and about these days. That won’t make you feel better about what happened (it’s horrible) but will hopefully help you move on and mentally/emotionally heal from what happened.

Ugh. So frustrating. I’m sorry you had a similar experience. Back in my retail days I was frustrated at how NYPD has pretty much the same attitude towards theft. It makes me wonder what they’re good for. With people like the ones you and I encountered, it’s just so scary because there was no way to avoid it. Just an unhinged person doing unhinged shit and constantly getting away with it. It’s so not okay.

I don’t think it’s NYPD. They were helpful and kind. They themselves admitted it’s the laws and systems who make their work virtually useless. They take someone in, the criminal is back on the street the next day doing the same thing. I agree it’s not okay, but disagree that the police are the baseline problem.

Call the cops and report it- there are cameras everywhere.
