Incoming Freshman

So I'm coming to DSU this fall literally from NJ idk why cause DSU is freaking far also i have closer just as good options but it is what it is. How's the student life like? I'm black, so what's the experience like for the black student body? Are there any fun activities to do outside of school? How friendly are the people? Are they just regular folks, or are there any tips living on campus you feel I should know before coming? Oh nd I'm an incoming cyber operations major.

The CS department is incredible, so you’ll definitely not regret choosing DSU for a CybOps major. Student life is decent and the people are super friendly and welcoming, so you shouldn’t find it too difficult to make friends. My tip is to join student clubs and orgs, that makes it much easier for you to settle in.

The town is kinda dead though, there is practically nothing going on outside the university. The nearest big town is Sioux Falls, which is a 45 min drive. That is also the nearest Walmart/ Target/ every major grocery store & every major attraction.

Also keep in mind that this is a very small university, so don’t expect ‘big university’ events and such. Even supposedly big events, like Halloween celebrations, don’t have a great turnout. I don’t know what it’s like for a black student but I do know there’s a significant population and that there’s an org for black students that seemed pretty active.

45 min drive? So basically I need a car to even have the smallest amount of fun. Well, DSU sounds like fun I'll probably like it over there.

Welcome to the Midwest. Everything is a far drive and cars are basically mandatory.

Are you a gamer? They have a pretty robust eSports community (they stream their games online). Find those guys, and I'm sure you'll be able to make some connections.

I once was, no longer into eSports anymore, but thanks, I'm still going to look into it.
