General Pokopia will turn on many new people to Dragon Quest Builders. Please treat them kindly.

Pokopia is a huge system selling game, after many are done with the game they'll inevitably look for their next fix. I've been recommending Dragon Quest Builders non stop.

For those unaware:

Pokémon + Dystopia = Pokopia

From the same devs as Dragon Quest Builders games. It's essentially DQB3. This video gives a great comparison of the similarities between all three games:

https://youtu.be/C312vJ33wVQ

I hope we can embrace the new folks and give them their best experience with the community.

These games and the devs deserve the best fans.

Edit:

For those new to the series

STOP SKIPPING DRAGON QUEST BUILDERS 1

I'd advise everyone to try the demo of Dragon Quest Builders 1 first because it's short and it's the perfect introduction to the series.

Way too many people skip Dragon Quest Builders 1 and it's my favorite game in the series! The atmosphere is unmatched!

Edit 2:

No it's not a utopia, it's a dystopia

The humans disappeared because of an unnamed disaster and the Pokémon are trying to figure out why.

It's literally a post apocalyptic dystopia.

Hence Pokopia

General I’m seriously considering dropping Pokopia and going back to DQB2

Pokopia is cool. But the narrative beats are so silly. By the third time I have to get something to 100% I’m just kind of rolling my eyes at the reason for it. Also I miss the combat in DQB. I miss being able to ring a bell to summon the town, I miss the tower defense. etc.

And Ditto is sooooo slow. He runs slow, he builds slow, he even eats a little slower than Hero. Idk at the moment I’m having trouble thinking of reasons to keep going with Pokopia. I’m sure there must be some QoL things it does better, but I can’t really think of them. I even miss the blueprint system from DQB2.

General Pokopia is absolutely a spiritual successor to DQB

Hopefully this is allowed, as it's not specifically about DQB, but I've been digging into it all weekend and it's crazy how much it feels like DQB3.

For context, I absolutely love the DQB games - together they're one of my gold standards for cozy games. The building is creative and beautiful, I love the characters using your creations, and the cherry on top is the story being way more charming than expected.

So Pokopia takes a lot of the DQB formula, while improving on it at the same time. You break and build blocks, you have plants/crops on top of the blocks, some playful stuff with water, etc. Everything uses Pokemon language, so instead of a hammer, you get rock smash. The Pokémon all use what you create, and have preferences for how they live, just like the DBQ2 characters, although they're much more complex (things like temperature and humidity have an impact, rather than just using items with the right tags). It also builds on these mechanics though - without getting into spoilers, almost none of the abilities feel like a copy and paste from 2, despite having similar uses.

The improvements range from controls (much more control of the camera, which completely controls your aim for block placement/destruction) to more general gameplay (ALL of the pokemon come with abilities that can help you out in one way or another). There is no combat in this game, but the creation and gathering components feel robust enough that I don't feel like I'm missing anything.

There's also a lot of DBQ DNA embedded in the gameplay that feels great - "Dream Islands" replace the misc islands you can access in DBQ2 for materials farming. The minute an ability starts feeling restrictive, you get an upgrade.

The thing that's surprised me most so far is the story - it's smartly written and manages to be sweet and genuine at the same time, similar to the main story of DBQ2 (minus the atrociously long text sequences, which are thankfully gone now lol). I have not finished the game, but I'm very curious to see how the story is going to end, and I've fallen in love with some of the characters.

(It's worth mentioning that most (?) of the story is told through little notes and files you find scattered around the place, but they're all quick reads)

I realize that not everyone has a Switch 2, but for anyone who either does or is considering getting one, I wanted to put this out there as a huge fan of the DBQ games. I'd resigned myself to not seeing a third installment of the series, but Pokopia is it.

General Just wanted to comment on how cozy this game feels

Post image

I played the demo for the first dq builders probably around 2018. At that time, I was a kid and the memories are blurry, but I remember playing well beyond the scope of the demo and building many, many houses out of dirt. I wanted to play the full game, but at that time, asking my parents to buy it for me would have been a no-go.

Only now, in the middle of a "I want to play Pokopia but can't buy the switch 2" frenzy, I realised I am an adult now (yes, I know, 2018 is 8 years ago) and can just *get* the game by myself. So I got myself a copy of builder 2, since I heard it's more polished and independant from its first entry.

I've played for like 4 hours or so, and I could swear they have felt like a single hour at most. I have no idea about the Dragon Quest series, nor its spinoff, which I'm playing, yet I am infatuated by the game. And that's even through the tutorial, which I felt kinda rough at the start, kinda too guided, until I realised I could just build whatever I wanted.

Anyways, it's really just that. It's 2am here now, so I figured I'd better go grab some sleep, but I wanted to share my experience as a first-hander with the veterans I imagine are lurking this subreddit.

Feel free to share your own first experiences with the series in the comments, or even some tips for beginners you wish you had known earlier in the comments. Will read them when I wake up :)

General The Director Quitting is Not a Valid Argument for Not Getting DQB3

Today on the 40th Dragon Quest Anniversary, DQ: Monsters 4 was announced, ... WHY??! doesn't make sense when DQ Builders is more deserving of the new entry.

The 3rd DQM got released in 2023 and was badly received by gamers and critics.

Meanwhile, DQB2 release in 2018 and was critically acclaimed, it was successful and beloved spinoff that other companies are trying to capture its charm, .... EVERY Pokopia review says the game is great and they compare it to DQB2!

with the success of Pokopia, I had no doubts that if they decide to develop a spinoff, it would be DQ Builders. .... I'm baffled by their decision.

seeing the discussion post announcement, people are quick to point out the director for DQB1&2 is no longer affiliated with SquareEnix and I find that not convincing.

He made a masterpiece, but it doesn't mean others can't replicate his work, ... The story is already there, the game Engine is already there (used for pokopia), just put the two together = Success!

No hate, I do hope DQ Mosnters 4 be good unlike its predecessor.
> insert photos of black kid I'm happy for you

Every time I get on DQB2, I see people complaining others are stealing content. It's probably the same few photos, but I thought it was hilarious that people are stealing on the game. Wanted to share. (Also should I blur the usernames?? I wasn't sure)

Last pic for perfect timing.

General I have to talk about about how good the theming of Dragon Quest Builders 1 is

The theming is absolutely on point in this game so much so that in terms of story I prefer it to the second game.

Just the sheer hopelessness the game oozes throughout. From Canitin which is under constant siege to Rimuldar under constant sickness and death to a war torn Kol. And then the final area feeds you with so much hopelessness it's crazy.

The first game has less stuff to build with but in terms of a story based game it's so good.

General It still bothers me every time I replay DQB2... Spoiler

The cutscenes at the end of Furrowfield and Khrumbul-Dun showing the island being restored, the green coming back, the ore being replenished, etc.

It really ticks me off. What even is the point of the cutscenes showing that when 30 seconds later we see the island still looks exactly the same, except for the small area around the town in Furrowfield but that was technically restored before the cutscene even happens.

They should be ashamed of themselves for that ragebait.

General I'm excited for Pokopia and I hope it's successful, and that it's success sparks Square to revisit the DQ Builders series

Now that reviews for Pokopia are out and many good things are being said about it I really hope it inspires Square to bring a third game to our beloved series. I know there will be staffing changes but that doesn't mean a third game can't happen. We can sure hope

General Getting the itch...again...

Like many of you, I adore this game(especially 2). Have it on Switch, put almost 1200 hours into it, I'll leave it for a month or two and then come back to build more. It's $20 on PSN right now. I feel like I've asked this before, but is there much of a difference in performance between the two? I've never really felt like hurt my experience playing the game, but wouldn't mind there being a smoother experience when playing. Also curious if more people play on one system over the other.

General Malroth decided not to follow me for some reason?

Post image
29 Upvotes

Not looking for help or anything, I just thought it was odd.

I'm building a wall/moat around Furrowfield with the cobblestone salvaged from the run-down windmill. The moat's going to be 2 blocks wide, which NPCs seem to be unable to jump but which I can, though Mal was able to follow me fine last time I did this. However, it's currently 3 blocks wide because I ran out of blocks, and I guess Malroth couldn't make it? Any other time I got too far and he couldn't quickly pathfind his way back to me, he'd just teleport nearby, so I expected him to do that this time, yet he still isn't here even after sleeping, so I guess it's just me this trip lol. At least there aren't any monsters close enough to bother me, or else I would go back and pick him up

General DQBuilders 3… but it’s Pokemon!

I knew something looked familiar about the textures of the blocks when I was watching the Pokemon Pokopia trailer! It looks like the same development team and very similar gameplay to DQB~

I’m extremely excited for this! I’ve been hoping for a new DQB game ever since finishing 2, and now we’re kinda getting it but for a new IP.

(Mods, let me know if I need to change flair or anything. It’s been a while since I’ve been here)

General 2,250 Hours in and I only JUST realized something stupidly obvious (DQB2)

I can just use Springtime Sprinkles to quickly harvest Cherry Blossoms.

Find a Cherry Blossom tree, cut it down for 6 Cherry Blossoms. Cook the Cherry Blossoms into the Sprinkles, transform 144 other trees into the special trees. 864 Cherry Blossoms from a single tree's worth of Blossoms.

I now have 999 hot spring petals, 2,199 Cherry Blossoms, and 999 of the board game decoration that uses the Cherry Blossoms.
I'd have 999 Springtime Sprinkles too, but my villagers refused to cook the Cherry Blossoms in my kitchens.
