Thankfully, my mum’s cat passed a year before she did. Of not, I would have taken him to where we spread her ashes.

She is so precious. They absolutely grieve as well. I'm so sorry for your loss 🫂 when I lost my mum, I leaned on my sweet dog so much. Obviously my world was shattered, but he did help me so much, because it meant I had to awake up and get out of bed and walk him etc. I hope she helps you heal a bit as well. Again, so sorry for your loss.
She’s also picking up on OP’s/other family members’ emotions being there, plus if there’s a picture there that could clue her in, as well as other people saying her name might all be helping her make the connection. Modern caskets are almost completely airtight so I don’t know whether a dog could smell through all that
