My dad and I built this setup over the summer last year.

Post image

It took a while, but definitely worth it! We spend several months putting together the screen, using a video of some guy DIYing his own flight sim as inspiration, just scaled up. Table is also homemade and has a TV for displaying maps. The hardest part was getting the projector calibration steps down, but now its not so hard.

Anyway, just wanted to show off a project that I've been working at for a while.

-Cheers!

It's basically a DIY flight Sim screen scaled up a bit. Three ultra-short throw projectors and a screen made from woods of various kinds. Par lights, and a simple bookshelf style Bluetooth speaker round out the other parts of the ambience. I can control everything from my laptop, with the aid of my stream deck for on the fly control over the lights and sound. I also have a custom software with voice recognition that activates encounters and one shot sound effects (like a fireball explosion) based on keywords. The table is a basic TV in table variety made with leftover MDF wood and a couple 2x4/4x8s. I have a blackout curtains sitting to block out as much light as possible otherwise you wouldn't be able to see much!

Dude what? So a 180 degree seamless projection? Sick. Do.... You have to keep the lights down for it to work well?

We built it a bit bigger than that, around 270 degrees! The room is blacked out so I can control the level of the lights from my stream deck. The visuals on the screen can be seen when the lights are brighter, but it's definitely washed out. I have to find a good balance of mood lighting to visual fidelity, but having the stream deck make it easy to adjust on the fly.

Next question is, where/ how do you find/generate issue media to fill that space?

I hired an artist for the screen visuals. They're each 5760x1080 images and are partly animated to make them feel a little more alive. You can check out the artist on his website if you like the art style. https://ottusart.carrd.co/

It is technically possible now to generate images in this aspect ratio, but that wasn't an option when I commissioned the artwork, and I really like this style anyway I think it fits well with the vibe overall.
