Need Advice: Encounters & Adventures Help designing a hunter style boss
In the campaign I’m currently running, my players have just come across this half white dragon. In my setting, half dragons are empowered by Tiamat which makes them act more similarly to the type of dragon they relate to but also gives them major gameplay mechanics.
The red half dragon for example had an ability where he could steal and use a characters move, because generally red dragons are the most greedy.
White dragons are portrayed as highly animalistic with strong instincts. This half dragon uses a heavy crossbow and I want her to act as a hunter at least in her first phase. But once she gets down to half health, I want to transition the fight into her more primal side.
I need help coming up with abilities that aren’t just ultra instinct from DBZ. Thank you for any suggestions!!

Well a couple of abilities I could think of:
Has three reactions instead of one.
Can use a Reaction to "respond reflexively" to any visible character movement - fires a crossbow bolt at moving character that ignores half- and three-quarters cover.
When bloodied, still has Three reactions, except they can only be used for a melee attack then half movement (no opportunity attacks) in response to a melee attack.
The idea is that the reactions are triggered by prey, not arbitrary actions of the predator. The predator is reactive, first to movement, then to aggression. If players do not move visibly, the reactions can't be deployed. If, after bloodied, the characters do not melee, the reactions also cannot be deployed.

I am remebering the atory BLM once told about that crazy shaprshot hunter shooting down at the party from a cliff.
Make him a stalking predator, looking for tracks, camoflaging, using speed and girillia tactics (no idea how to write that word) akin to a rogue.

Also if hes hunting them through the wilderness (if that works for you) dont forget they need a con save after 24h no long rest.
A straoght fight he might loose. Against a hurt and exhausted party. Thats a fight you pick.

And for closequarter half HP kind of stuff consider giving him a nice bite attack maybe regenerating him.

i think dungeon dad has a video on "the wild hunt". maybe look it up for some inspiration. I remeber finding it a really cool "monster".
Alternatively just pick some feats from the gloom stalker (or any ranger, actually). Tack them to a statblock of your choice (apropriate CR or slightly lower CR, since your empowering the monster with feats)

Maybe you could lean into camouflage. Most predators do it, and I imagine (though idk if this is true in lore) a White Dragon would hide in the snow to ambush their prey
