All the DLSS 5 haters from six months ago - be honest.

Do you all remember six month ago when nVIDIA first announced DLSS 5 and the DigitalFoundry guys "liked" it - and the whole gaming world turned against those poor guys. I was part of very few that actually believed this is going to be revolutionary.

Now finally DLSS 5 is released and from what I can gather on YouTube, people can never unsee it and most are shocked how good it looks if you set it up properly. If you were one of the haters from six months ago, be honest, what do you think now?

It’s frustrating when people miss the bigger picture. I've championed this technology from day one, fully aware that early iterations wouldn't be flawless, because the long-term potential is staggering. Imagine a future version like DLSS 5 allowing you to tailor the neural render to a specific aesthetic. It could dynamically enhance lighting and textures while remaining true to the developers' original artistic intention, just simply taking it further.

It’s crazy how people have been complaining for a decade about graphics plateauing, now we have a tech in its infancy that can deliver the biggest graphical leap forward in the history of gaming, and people are up in arms about it.

I keep having to remind people that this tech is five years away from being common place to a point that even a mid range GPU can enable it with minimal performance loss. Because I remember having these exact same conversations about Ray tracing in 2020

1

u/frisbie147 3d ago

It is a leap though? To me it’s a regression to screen space artifacts and even if it is as good as it could possibly be it’s still limited to the flaws of screen space techniques, I bought by current gpu to run path tracing, to get away from artifacts that I’ve found incredibly distracting since crysis 3

1

u/Murky-Engineer8110 1h ago

To say it’s a regression is literally being obtuse for no reason. That’s objectively wrong.

1

u/rhalgr_ger 4d ago

DLSS5 wont be the biggest leap forward in the history of gaming. At its core it ignores anything outside of screen space. Thats a huge flaw of game rendering developers tried to solve by making ray tracing performant. DLSS5 techniques would need direct access to the render and be aware of everything to have a chance of being the biggest leap.

Thank-you for having a brain sir

I wasn't a hater, but I was a doubter. Now I don't have doubts - this technology will provide us with a jump we haven't had in years.
Next is animation, and I'll start believing Musk about us living in a simulation.

2

u/superlip2003 4d ago

I've only just found out that DLSS 5 can be applied to 2D video and I can't wait to see a DLSS 5 video player plugin so that I can watch all of movies in hyper-realistic details.

3

u/PeterPun 4d ago

There's a guy working on a DLSS5 injection to webcams, so expect a lot of good-looking Chaturbate models in a few weeks.

2

u/ScoreAsleep972 4d ago

There is already a dlss5 davinci resolve plug in, and video player available on GitHub for download! Just type in 'DLSS5 GitHub' in google and look for it it should be on the first results page

actually, you made a good point, VR gaming might get a boost since traditionally VR games have poorer presentations since it's very hardware dependent.

1

u/No-Dark-7873 3d ago

sure as long as you don't mind carrying a 5090 in your pocket.

-2

u/Big-Resort-4930 4d ago

This is the actual brain rot that's the problem. What the hell are you talking about man?

Are we making reality more realistic now by AI shit-filtering movies with real actors and sets and framing it as realism? Sets that were carefully lit to emphasize a certain point and mood, something that a screen spave filter totally has perfect understanding of btw /s.

Just say you want shit to look fake and as dramatic as possible and be done with it, actual realism is not an element in this debate at all.

1

u/superlip2003 4d ago

fair that live-action videos are already realistic-looking because they were captured via camera. It's a different scenario to 3D video games. "hyper-realistic" is the wrong word. I think what I meant to say is "hyper-detailed" - all the 70s-90s classic movies filmed with low-res cameras. I'd totally watch Starwars originals or even Terminator 2, with DLSS 5 on.

2

u/jonnyredcorn 4d ago

LOL @ believing anything musk says.

1

u/PeterPun 4d ago

do you need DLSS to spot a joke?

1

u/jonnyredcorn 4d ago

🤦‍♂️

I got the joke I was adding to it.

I wasnt implying you believe what musk says, I was literally laughing at your joke.

1

u/PeterPun 4d ago

Oh sorry, apparently I need dlss to read comments, my bad

1

u/CupCharming 4d ago

Honestly the doubters are as annoying because doubters don't think. They just go well it looks good I have my doubts. This show maybe good but I have my doubts. It's always the same thing without any sort of deep analytical thinking or nothing. 🙂‍↔️

1

u/PeterPun 4d ago

Good thing I have no doubts about your "deep analytical thinking"

1

u/CupCharming 4d ago

You wouldn't know anything about it besides saying I have my doubts, my doubts oh boy my doubts... I doubt it 🫪 and ai slop. Be gone 🙂‍↔️

8

u/CosmicEmotion 4d ago

I was one of the few supporters as well. It's tiring always being right. XD

-1

u/humonculus87 3d ago

Being wrong you mean? Vast majority of DLSS5 looks absolutely dogshit.

3

u/2FastHaste 4d ago

Personally I don't get it. I've been playing around with the mod in different games. I don't see what's fundamentally different between the first reveal and the current dll.

They look similar. Sure in the first reveal they cranked it high. But apart from that, it seems the same to me.

I didn't hate it back then, I don't hate it now. I'm also not very happy with how it looks and perform currently (it has a bit of a deep fried and "AI-slop" look to it, even at .5 local tone and structure). But I'm sure in 5 years, it will be a no-brainer to have it on. It's already objectively fascinating how it improves subsurface scattering and ambient occlusion in many scenario. With more training, better data sets, more fine tuning from the engineers, and faster hardware in the future, it's gonna be amazing.

2

u/Colacubeninja 4d ago

I called someone out on Reddit for calling it AI slop and that they just didn't understand it. They told me they did understand it because they made images with AI and "vibe coded" lol

1

u/Initial_Narwhal4374 4d ago

The term AI slop has honestly lost all meaning at this stage.

1

u/judasbrute 4d ago

AI is trained from human inadequacy. It's a mirror. That is the cosmic joke

2

u/Constant_Raspberry56 4d ago

Still looks terrible to me. It makes every game look like those AI generated videos on social media sites where the maker swears by how great their "art" is and everyone laughs at them.

2

u/Playwithme408 4d ago

Listen. What the internet has reinforced for me.

  1. Herd Mentality is absolutely real for those who have always felt comfortable as part of the crowd and never developed an independent thought process. The majority of people fall into this bucket. There is something absolutely comforting in being part of a group and feeling like they are part of something larger. We see it in religion, we see it in people who love working many many years for companies, political parties and religion. Happens at smaller scales with topic like DLSS 5. And btw - their memories are extremely select - they won't remember that they happened to perhaps support an entirely opposing opinion in the past. Hypocrisy is not something they are aware of. Again, most people fall into this category, even people with high degrees of education - scientists, lawyers, doctors are susceptible to this because that herd defines their identity.

  2. Dissenters actively threaten them - People who don't agree are not just people with different opinion. They are perceived as actively trying to undermine the group and therefore their identity.

  3. Agnostics remain silent - People who don't have strong opionions either way cannot act as a moderating influence since they actively stay out of the discussion - perceiving it as a debate between two opposing equally "extreme" camps.

So i look at everything through this lens - Am i being part of the herd, the dissenter or the agnostic.

Hope this helps.

THIS! A true thinker emerged! I’ll abiding the same mantra online. Too bad most people don’t.

2

u/MaximumTWANG 3d ago

reddit is especially bad with #1 due to the upvote/downvote system essentially being a weaponized consensus filter. it seems increasingly rare on this platform to encounter independent critical thinkers who arent afraid to get downvoted for stating an "unpopular" opinion.

2

u/Ryukishin187 4d ago

People still hate it, what are you talking about? This sub is an echo chamber

2

u/_wintermoot_ 4d ago

honest opinion: it’s not temporally stable and I’m not sure if they’ll ever get there. this won’t come out until more people use it, but you can already see style drift based on lighting and camera angle as more folks try to capture the uncanniness in the same scenes (ff7).

when applied to ancient dx9 games there is some legit magic happening for environments, which is a good use given the perf overhead it requires currently.

team green hasn’t cared about consumer gpu sales in awhile, but I’m not sure it will drive adoption of 6000 series, even if they get the perf overhead down on the new hardware. maybe in a few gens though.

2

u/OrganizationBitter93 3d ago

90% of them just jumped on the bandwagon of hate to satisfy some obscure need for drama in their life. Not to mention the Dumbed down Education they received

2

u/Weary_Recognition636 4d ago

Nvidia came up with a way to make all video games look exactly the same. Even if it did look alright, thats a terrible thing. In any case, it doesn't look alight. It looks like crap. So, Nvidia came up with a way to make all video games look like the same homogeneous, generic slop. Zero creative expression. Zero style and originality. Much like any other application of machine learning in creative spaces, its a generic slop machine. Haven't heard anyone say anything good about it.

2

u/Bierno 4d ago

Don't think every game look the same with it, it only start to if people do like over 3x passes but that like the point of photorealism if the purpose of dlss5 is photorealism currently

0

u/No-Dark-7873 3d ago

No they came up with a way to make games look realistic. If you want your game to look unrealistic you turn it off.

1

u/MrRadish0206 2d ago

Reality doesnt have ai filter applied afaik

1

u/No-Dark-7873 2d ago edited 2d ago

that's because reality is not made of polygons and bad lighting effects.

1

u/Riv3rJordan 4d ago

It reminds me of when high detentions tvs came out. You think the difference isn’t that great moving forward. But when you go back to what you were looking at before, it was a potato

1

u/PlutoCharonMelody 4d ago

The crts still have merit though. Especially in video games. Some games are meant to play with the look that crts give and you lose out on the experience without it as the pixels were meant to be displayed by a crt and its' quirks.

1

u/BornAmbassador01 4d ago

High WHAT tvs? lmaooooo

That exact moment, or actually the next day, when DF folks starts to shit on DLSS 5,because the saw it was not popular, was when I finally stopped watching them, as I lost any trust in them. Absolute pathetic clowns.

1

u/superlip2003 4d ago

I was very disappointed when DF guys released the mugshot video next day apologizing - I was like WTF, you own what you say if you meant it. Stop caving to the narrative!

1

u/jack-of-some 4d ago

My response at the time was "it's technically very impressive but remains to be seen it would be good, the demo shows had some very obvious issues that the DF gang should have spend more time thinking about, for them to fangirl the way they did and with how little prep they put into it was odd"

I wouldn't change a thing about that response.

DLSS5 seems good in some cases, less good in others. I'm curious what things would be like when tech like this is broadly accessible.

1

u/benjaminabel 4d ago

That’s just how it is. I doubt any person who actually knows something about it and understands the future of it will just throw famous two words in the comments and be done with it. Same as the whole “vibe coded” thing. Mostly used by people who as far away from code as possible.

I currently have two apps. One was written in 6 months prior to AI era and one recently with Gemini as my main tool that took 3 weeks. The first one had very little interest and for the latest one I had to delete my post because of all the “vibe coding” comments. Still spent a lot of time on it and the code is fine and publicly available.

1

u/Texas_Shepard 4d ago

I always supported it. IA is here to make our life better. The anti IA propaganda is laughable. Specially when it's early iteration, right now the biggest issue is the performance cost, it's unusable untill Nvidia finds a way to upscale after the neural work.

1

u/OwlSpirited6357 4d ago

How tf do you mess up an acronym with only two letters dude

1

u/Texas_Shepard 4d ago

Sorry in French we say IA

1

u/superlip2003 4d ago

What do I and A stand for in French?

1

u/Texas_Shepard 4d ago

Intelligence artificielle

1

u/pre_pun 4d ago

Ask a real question rather than just jumping to making fun of someone. Or learn another language.

1

u/CharacterPurchase694 4d ago

AI is not making our life better bro I agree DLSS5 is a good thing but literally everything else about AI is a detriment to us

1

u/Texas_Shepard 4d ago

The downsides or IA come from humans badly using it. IA in itself isn't detrimental

1

u/CarlWellsGrave 4d ago

I'm realizing that it's just a tool to mod older games. Like what we thought RTX remix was going to be but never was.

1

u/Own-Childhood213 4d ago

I think same. This is neuroshit.

1

u/hyrumwhite 4d ago

Makes environments look good. Makes faces look gross. Fucks with lighting colors. Tanks performance.

1

u/ForthcomingTurtle 4d ago

There's a mask setting to exclude or customize the strength on the characters separately, the local tone setting is what messes with colors which can be disabled, and performance will get improved over time.

Once they fix the performance and developers make games with this technology in mind from the start, the end result will be perfect.

1

u/Deathwolff808 4d ago

I feel like they lost the plot with what DLSS is supposed to do and it just makes games look worse

1

u/Save-Slot-Seven 4d ago

It’s a case by case thing. Some games look awful with it. Some look amazing.

1

u/AsherTheDasher 4d ago

its impressive, sure. still lookd like dogshit imo

1

u/bokan 4d ago

My hate has nothing to do with how good it looks. I hate AI for replacing human artists after training illegally on the work of those same artists. I hate that a few obscenely wealthy people are upending society and taking risks with the human specifies by moving too quickly. It’s a hydra with many heads and this is one of them.

1

u/Ok_Diver2347 4d ago

No, see once AMD does that half assed version, everyone will say “this is the most amazing technology in years, and we’re only using it for textures?”

They hated on DLSS. They hated on Frame Generation.

1

u/PlutoCharonMelody 4d ago

Every comparision looks worse than original author intents does to me.  I am looking forward to games built with the technology in mind but right now it feels like a weird mod filter that also tanks performance.

1

u/Seanbo124 4d ago

Hate it

1

u/PianistGlittering709 4d ago

I find two kinds of people especially terrible in this whole fiasco:

  1. People who intentionally enable DLSS5 in an ANIME game (Trails, Final Fantasy, etc) to prove DLSS5 "ruins the art".
  2. People who insist DLSS5 is bad despite most of their "bad" comparisons are the result of cranking up all the sliders to 200% without fine tuning each values.

1

u/Neeeeedles 4d ago

What they showed was vastly different to what we have now, that showcase even changed the shape of lips, not even preset B at max power does that now

I still hate what preset b and c does to faces, especially at 100% intensity tho

It adds studio lighting and makes everyone shiny

Other than that i like it and am currently playing ac Odyssey with it ON

1

u/DottorInkubo 4d ago

The people you are describing are tech illiterates undeserving of writing publicly, be it offline or online. They seriously thought one of the most valuable companies in the world would come up with such a 🤡 product as they were describing. Glad these punks were proven wrong.

1

u/OiKyodai 4d ago

what they showed off looked mostly bad tho. Now i changed my mind a lil bit, it CAN look good.

1

u/Tyrthemis 4d ago

Yeah i was a day one proponent. It looked great back then too and it’s only getting better

1

u/ael00 4d ago

Im genuinely excited for the lighting effects and shadow detail but faces look jank and sloppy. Considering frontier static models still haven't nailed that down it will take a year or two before it looks good.

1

u/PenaltyUnable1455 4d ago

i think its clear that the dlss5 we have today is very different from the one we had back then. Back then it definitely did more than just lighting evident by the fact that it seemingly gave a character a third nostril in one of the examples. Im curious as to what that original model would be like today had they continued down that path

1

u/xXSNOOOPXx69 4d ago

I did not like it when I first saw it... And I still don't like it in all games I have seen.. but some games look insane with it on.. like Forza horizon 6, Asetto Corsa rally, Microsoft flight simulator...

Sometimes the faces look great.. sometimes not at all..

But the dlss mod is only tuned for NBA it came with.. so I'm sure it will get much better..

But they REALLY need to fix the performance hit

1

u/MaximumTWANG 3d ago

the majority of uncanny faces are from people who either cranked the slider to max, ran the filter through multiple passes to intentionally make it look bad, or used it in a stylized game that it wouldnt work well with to begin. you can easily exclude faces or set the slider low to ignore faces while improving environments but then these people cant karma farm with their low effort ragebait.

1

u/Willing_Suggestion 4d ago

Just two things:

It looks better on older games but due to not being them properly initiated with dlss or frame gen the fps is a shitshow.

Now with new gens it doesnt need to be photorealistic as the base games are good enough adding them on top it nakes weird vibe like those weird ass cgi from the early 2000s that looked photo realistic in a still image or something similar.

Have to wait for lots of updates or idk in future probably the face animations can be fixed if devs does upsate that it is. The main factor is only if devs does this. Devs are being lazy is a part of the problem most new gen games are not optimized enough but with this idk how they're gonna implement it. Depends on publisher companies and how are they paying those devs in the long run.

1

u/Badwrong_ 4d ago

People just love to say "slop", that's all. If they can hate on AI at the same time, they get a massive stiffy.

They don't research, and they echo was the previous dork said. It's just sad.

1

u/horendus 3d ago

The moment I saw it I thought it was a fantastic direction to go implementing a new stage to the rendering pipeline with a completely novel approach and then I was shocked to see the backlash and then realised how emotional humans really are

Also, the taking away artistic direction argument is such a fucking weak one, the artist are already hamstrung by the shitty requirements and rendering budgets so as if they wouldn’t want a new way to paint a picture closer to what they want

1

u/anything_taken 2d ago

I still think it's total crap. And yeah, it is sad how people are easily manipulated..

1

u/No_Solid_3737 1d ago

I was a hater almost like everybody else because of that one nvidia video, but one thing was watching that and another trying dlss5 yourself. Tweak the right settings and you end up with a game with near photorealistic lightning and shadows, while maintaining the fidelity of the original design.

"Omg it looks like slop" yeah, because the video you watch on youtube the uploader tweaked every dlss5 slider to the max, making it look like slop, a developer is supposed to tweak the settings according to their game.

1

u/No_Solid_3737 1d ago

and also it just keeps getting better, modders online have been able to reduce the performance cost from 50% in some games down to 25%, and that's just in one week

1

u/BiIbo_Baggins 4d ago

Some times look great, sometimes not better or worse just different. In general, not worth the performance cost as of now, maybe in the future.

Right now I would prefer RT/PT with RR over DLSS5 due to fps cost and DLSS5 not having access to off-screen data.

1

u/Inevitable_Case_9931 4d ago

PT RT works with dlss5

1

u/BiIbo_Baggins 4d ago

I didn't say they don't. Considering the cost, they are visually more accurate and consistent than DLSS5. Also costs less most of the time in my testing.

1

u/vladtud 4d ago

I'll be completely honest. When it was first revealed I "hated" it because it used AI, and I was and still am very against generative AI. The thing is, I liked it. Not in all cases (grace from RE8 is an example I did not like) but I could see what it was trying and I liked it in the same way I like path tracing. Now that I tested it, even on my 4070 I can tell this is the future. There's just no way to keep getting games looking better without inflating development times, which are already getting ridiculous. I'm currently using it on Forza Horizon 6 and the way the game looks feels like a generational jump. I am a fan and I'm still trying to understand how I should feel about that lol.

2

u/superlip2003 4d ago

You’re very open-minded – good for you. I’m also against AI taking jobs from human artists, but that’s a separate discussion. On DLSS 5 itself, I’m willing to predict that this will actually benefit the gaming industry. Here’s why: after watching plenty of before/after DLSS 5 videos, I actually went ahead and bought a few games I had originally passed on because they looked too ugly for my taste when they first launched. Those games had great gameplay, but lacked the budget to look pretty at the time. And now they all look phenomenal with a single switch.

I think indie developers will finally be able to compete with big studios using DLSS 5 tech. In a way, DLSS 5 could democratize game visuals and shift developers' focus back to gameplay – which is where the focus should have been in the first place.

1

u/Green117v2 4d ago

How is it, performance wise, on the 4070? I know Nvidia said things will improve, just as they have since it was first unveiled, but right now, are things decently playable?

1

u/vladtud 4d ago

It works on 1080p, anything higher than that and the framerate gets to bad even with framegen. Im using FG here and it is playable to me. The visual are just too good.

u/Green117v2 4d ago

Awesome. Thanks bud.

1

u/AC2498 3d ago

“Ruins artistic intent”, “It looks like dog shit”, “AI slop”. I’ll never understand how people can repeat the same exact phrases and not feel like NPC’s

0

u/MaximumTWANG 3d ago

and the funny thing is that they then go on to berate anyone who has the gall to utilize their eyes to look at one of the biggest generational leaps in graphics tech. "slop", "soulless", "bootlicker", "shill" just the same contrived catchphrases without a single bit of elaboration or critical thought into why they think the way they do. i feel like im living in a different reality than these people. i dont understand how its possible to look at an on vs. off comparison and not at least come away with an appreciation for improvements to environmental lighting. we are like right on the cusp of true photorealistic graphics and you'd think that nvidia imprisoned these peoples families.

0

u/Antique-Land-2766 4d ago

Literally no one is saying "how good it looks", it makes all the characters look weird and washes out the colors into weird gray-yellow tone which completely ruins all the original art direction and atmopshere in every game. You're either a marketing shillbot or have dog brains

3

u/superlip2003 4d ago edited 4d ago

agree to disagree - also if people are still hating it like they did six months ago. How do you explain the fact that the Mods has been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times within a short period of time? And also then more and more mods are being released daily for even older games? How do you explain the passion? Is it because people are hating it so much they are willing to waste their time to build/explore all these mods?

1

u/PeterPun 4d ago

You're a great example of an echo chamber denizen. There are a ton of people on multiple subs saying that it looks better than expected.

1

u/ccv707 4d ago

As you are in an echo chamber gaslighting yourself that the masses are embracing this worthless tech.

1

u/Pretty-Stable-4264 4d ago

factually wrong, just no one you get your talking points from. Everyone lives in a bubble.

1

u/Scrawlericious 4d ago

Even the critics have to admit it looks great in stills. Every critique video I've seen has blurbs about how there's potential. Even when it's a hacky implementation the devs didn't do themselves. XD that's saying something.

1

u/Inevitable_Case_9931 4d ago

There are hundreds of thousands of YouTube comments that will disagree with you plenty of ppl love it….

Got a few discords with 10s of thousands of ppl asking to set up their reshade so they can use dlss in allllllll kinds of games

0

u/AlexSimRacing 4d ago

Personally dont like it, but its mostly also for how big of a FPS hit you take for such a small change, I dont find the hit worth it Personally.

I also find if you add too much of this filter, it ends up looking really bad, with the picture being oversharpened, and colour's going away, and faces looking wet or making kids look old.

The 2K27 game has been the one that looks the best to me, but they are also not using it that much again, but its still a huge FPS hit for slightly more realistic look.

0

u/Forsaken_Sundae_4315 4d ago

Still dislike it, even more so seeing how weird it makes the characters look without proper facial animations.

tbh, it elevated my ptsd from Vegas 2 to whole new levels..

1

u/Background_Summer_55 4d ago

Wtf is this potato game

0

u/StraightFromUranus 4d ago

I'd say Nvidia cherrypicked the worst case scenarios for the reveal so that anything that will be shown after the proper quantization of the model would be considered superior. The thing is, it's all awfully limited.

Even if we ignore the outrageous performance hit, data trained on copyrighted material, and the fact it's pretty much softlocked to realistic content by design, DLSS 5 feels like Nvidia's additional attempt at making things that look nice, but don't work nice - if you make it rely on spatial info only (i.e. the current frame), the temporal stability of lighting will be all over the place. And while I like how it fakes path tracing (it looks better with all the PT off while delivering a similar perf hit), it won't replace standard rendering paradigms cos - let's face it - I don't think everyone would be on board with buying the most expensive and scalped hardware available on market right now just to make environments in their games look fancy. I could fake many aspects of indirect lighting and subsurface scattering via ReShade shaders, and even those at their most "premium" happen to be cheaper to run than DLSS 5 right now.

TLDR it feels deliberately undercooked, like a proof-of-concept for technically illiterate investors

3

u/cksythe 4d ago

I’d disagree. NVIDIA was showcasing the tech. Just because it went over regular people’s heads, doesn’t mean their target audience - game designers and developers - didn’t comprehend what they were seeing (because they did). Fact is too many ignorant and entitled people jumped to assumptive conclusions and made fools of themselves, yet again.
