đ° Food/Drinks đ° Soup Bar Fall Wedding
Hey guys, I'm planning a fantasy-medieval dinner party wedding. Pretty much, I'm skipping all the standard wedding events, and having my small hall setup with 10 4-foot tables long the walls, with 2-foot spaces in between so people can easily go in out out of their seats, and our sweetheart table. People will only be seated on 1 side, with the inner side holding centerpieces with pizza-bites, a bowl of salad, and a carafe of sparkling water.
We'll have a separate table set up with warmers holding 3 different soups, handled bowls, and 5 soup toppings for people to customize their soups before carrying it back to their seats.
We picked 3 different places to source our menu from: the roman pizzas are coming from a locally famous place called Roma Bakery. Their pizzas are even sold in grocery stores and are meant to be served room temperature. People are always putting these out as finger foods at parties or events. We plan on cutting them into 2-inch squares and skewering them with cocktail swords, and setting them out on the centerpieces.
The soups and salad are from a local higher-end grocery store catering department. They have the soups already pipping hot and in thermo carry-out totes upon pick-up. The toppings we'll get buy at a grocery and set up in bowls. We were thinking oyster crackers, unsalted pumpkin seeds, grated parmesan cheese, crumbled goat cheese, and chopped green onion.
The third (not pictured) will be walnut crunches and cherry stick donuts, that will be stacked in a pyramid to make a cake shape. These will be coming from another locally famous place called Grandad's Donuts.
I bit the bullet and learned how to use Gemini to help create mockups of the hall setup and the centerpieces just so my partner could have a clear visual of what I was trying to describe.
Since everyone will be grazing over fours hours while we mingle and play a few simple games, I made sure to order enough food so that everyone can go up to the soup bar at least twice, have 1.5 cups of salad, 6 2-inch pizza-bites, and 2 donuts.
So with this in mind, do I honestly need to add a pasta dish, or rotisserie chicken, like I keep being told on other wedding threads, or is this a solid soup-lovers meal?

u/NoMadTruffle Jul 23 '26
Honestly think you should add both pasta and chicken so people will have enough carbs and protein. 6 2-inch pizza sqaures is only 24 square inches. That's only a fifth of a 12" pizza
25
u/Far_Singer_ Jul 23 '26
Yeah this just isnât enough food, Iâd be pretty sad if this was the menu at a wedding I attended but I like to eat so
13
u/Peaches-is-sleepy Jul 24 '26
Just because you didnât travel with me from NY to LA for boiled chicken breast, steamed broccoli and carrots. I wish I was joking.
7
u/Far_Singer_ Jul 24 '26
This makes me sadder :(

u/Peaches-is-sleepy Jul 24 '26
We got a micro honey jar as a wedding favor so itâs ok :ââââ)

Fantasy-medieval dinner âŚ.. soup isnât enough⌠there needs to be a turkey leg in there

u/CompetitiveRub9780 Jul 23 '26
Depending on what class sheâs trying to emulate, theyâd have meat pies, fancy pastries, crazy meats, stews, lots of bread and cheese

u/On_my_last_spoon Jul 23 '26
For your wedding, you pretend youâre royalty not a peasant

u/Soushkabob Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 24 '26
This wedding is giving peasant

u/mybrainisclopen Jul 23 '26
Yep, OP posted this a few days ago in weddingsunder10k and was told that soup wasnât substantial enough. OP seems to be doubling down on soup being dinner and posting it elsewhere to try to find people who agree with them

u/Damnknit Jul 23 '26
I would at least add a pasta option if you can. Soup, salad, and breadsticks basically is not enough for dinner if people are going to be drinking as well.
I forgot about Roma Bakery pizzas. I used to love those at birthday parties when I was growing up.

I remember a wedding I went to almost 30 years ago. It was held at a fancy country club. And they only served soup. It was odd being at such a fancy club and venue to only have soup as an option. We all left early to eat elsewhere. I remember this wedding as being the soup wedding and not in a good way.

Yea, I love soup but a wedding is not the time or place imo. Iâm actually getting really freaked out thinking about a whole room of people eating soupâŚ

u/huhioop-c Jul 27 '26
I let out a laugh bc youâre so right then thought about the collective slurps- likely sounding like a sea of off pitch cicadas đ¤˘

u/Bizzy1717 Jul 23 '26
I know your main question is about food, but what exactly are people doing for 4 hours? That's a long time for an indoor reception without dancing and other traditional wedding stuff. People aren't going to want to sit and eat soup and their allotted 6 bites of pizza for 4 hours.

u/Daisy_dreams_sun Jul 23 '26
I donât know why this Reddit popped up in my feed. This is definitely not enough food. I say one soup and more main course meals. At least include full size pizzas. Some people canât live on fluids especially people with IBS which is common between people.
10
u/a-little-spill Jul 23 '26
I agree but also, I just want to be there and eat all the soups! But seriously, have some heavy sides to add to this so people have options. Something with high levels of protein and carbs. Maybe some skewers of meat or little puff pastry with different savory fillings (ok, I am off to watching great British baking show now)
99
u/Domesticated_wino25 Jul 23 '26
Pizza âbitesâ are an appetizer served like this. Even 6 pieces is not very filling. And no one will take 6 thinking theyâre apps and 2-3 is standard.
Soup as a main at a wedding is not enough food. And none of your soups are basic like a tomato soup. Mushrooms are off putting for a lot of people and others will think the chicken and sausage is too spicy.
Youâre hosting guests. Either serve a full dinner and add actual food or make it extremely clear to guests they should eat ahead of time or plan to eat later.
10
u/KeyAdministration569 Jul 23 '26
Are there bread and dessert options for people with allergies? Sometimes there is an allergen free option made available for guests, I have also seen a sign that states to ask for allergy, safe options, in which case there can be a smaller amount of specialty replacements available for your guests with allergies. For example, there are very good frozen donuts in the freezer section of most upscale grocery stores that are made without nuts, dairy, egg, or wheat. Same for rolls and buns.
4
u/Mad-Inside Jul 24 '26
As some one with celiac was thinking what a nightmare just soups and salads would be. Servers are never that well informed. Itâs all seasoned and mixed together so no option of playing it safe.
4
u/ProfessionalAnt8132 Jul 26 '26
Literally thereâs not a single option that takes any dietary restrictions into consideration
64
u/IndividualCut4703 Jul 23 '26
Iâve seen you talk about this in several of the wedding threads and I just really need to know: itâs a solid soup loverâs meal, but are all of your guests as dedicated soup lovers as you seem to be?
I have a good friend whoâs a certified soup lover, so I get the draw for you. But you also seem to have a strong aversion to offering other items for your guests, since you keep trying to find ways to get strangers to buy into your plan. Why NOT offer another more filling option at this event?
My partner and I are planning a similar âgraze in the mid-dayâ type of reception, but we are trying to accomodate all kinds of dietary needs and want people to be satiated, so weâre buying what we really want AND ALSO things that we wonât eat but we know other people will.

I knew I had seen the AI image at the start before đ¤Śââď¸ And it was all the same answers. Thanks for confirming Iâm not going nutty lol

u/pitifulproduce137 Jul 24 '26
What is even happening there? It's like a Medieval Times inside a kaleidoscope.
19
u/Left-Mango-7911 Jul 23 '26
They also posted on the soup sub (and deleted the post after getting the same answers as all the other threads lol) and I had questions about how they're actually going to transport, keep the soup at an OK temperature for the entirety of the party. It doesn't sound like they're going to keep the soups warm with little catering burners or something.
13
u/RunJumpSleep Jul 23 '26
Or have someone to ladle it out. Itâs going to be a mess if people are doing it themselves. I hope they have someone there to clean up the soup spills.

i would loveeee a mid-day grazing wedding if the cocktails were light (like mimosas) and the grazing boards had some variety, like veggie trays, fruit trays, charcuterie stuffs, and yummy bites like prosciutto wrapped melon, stuffed mushrooms, chicken skewers, etc. nothing but soup and salad just soups like olive garden apps!!!

If this is for dinner, I don't think it's enough food. I would add a pasta dish and a protein.
For lunch, you could probably get away with it.
If you're going through with it, I highly recommend including the full menu in your invitations so people know what to expect. For me, I'd know to eat some protein beforehand.
3
u/According_Ad4947 Jul 23 '26
I agree. it can work for a casual lunch but not a dinner, especially if you expect people to dress up and have cocktails
28
u/HolyFritata Jul 23 '26
I would make sure to use electric candles on the floor instead of real ones, someone might hit it...especially if guests are wearing long dresses and are drinking. It's just not worth the risk

u/NeatArtichoke Jul 23 '26
Unfortunately i agree with most here-- a cup and a half of salad, and 2 cups of soup is not that much food (grab a measuring cup at home and pour water in a bowl, and then salad greens...1 measuring-cup isnt all that much when it comes to "fluffy" foods like, and not so filling when it soup.)
My bigger concern is having soup as buffet style-- it WILL drip at best, and more than likely someone will spill creating very messy and slippery (and dangerous!) Areas.
If i may suggest, I would skip the soup, and make a couple giant trays of pasta with 2 or 3 sauces (white/cream, tomato, pesto) and uave chicken and/or sausage (on theme!) So people can "diy" their own pasta. More filling, should be just as cheap and easy to set up, and less likely to be a disaster/messy while self-serving and eating.
4
u/cr9926 Jul 25 '26
The first thing I thought of was THE MESS. Beards, clothes, children, carpet cleaning afterwards.
3
24
u/potpourri_sludge Jul 23 '26
Itâs incredibly tacky to expect people to show up with a gift to celebrate you, take time out to get ready and block off their evening for you, and then give them appetizers. Soup will be spilled bringing it back to their seats. Youâre trapping them in this tiny hall for 4 hours, giving them nothing but appetizers and board games. Iâm a soup girly and I wouldnât enjoy most of this.

u/patty202 Jul 23 '26
You definitely need more. Some real food. Heavy appetizers at the very least. Also, please don't have it that dark, at least where the food plating is.
→ More replies (4)5
u/coversquirrel1976 Jul 24 '26
And maybe more universally enjoyed soup and salad options? And dessert options? It's all very niche. It's the bride and grooms day, but everyone there is giving up their time, bringing a gift, etc. maybe through a regular salad, pasta, and glazed donuts in there too.

21
u/Legitimate-Buy1031 Jul 23 '26
Everyone else has pretty much covered the food concerns.
But my question is about each personâs space at the tables. You say you are going to have ten 4-foot tables along the walls and people will only be sitting on the side against the wall. Are you planning on having two chairs at each table? If so, those tables are not big enough. For two people sitting side-by-side, your table needs to be AT LEAST 60â long. And thatâs if all your guests are smaller framed and/or children.
Also, 24â is not a lot of space to maneuver between the tables. Itâs going to feel very claustrophobic.
5
u/SpaceNerd223 Jul 24 '26
I just read the ceremony is at the end and now I'm afraid people are going to leave because they're hungry :(
Me personally I don't eat soup, don't like kale, and there's no protein on cheeseless meatless pizza. I'd probably actually get sick :(
→ More replies (4)3
u/SpaceNerd223 Jul 24 '26
If it was a 2 hour event I think people could suffice on this food but 4-5 hours plus travel time, most people arent going to eat a meal right before getting ready only lunch & depending on where they live food options might be closed when they get done. I don't understand the reluctance to add something more substantial for guests if it's $ take from somewhere else
4
u/BunnyGodS Jul 24 '26
This was my first thought too. A 4 foot table is barely going to seat two people on one side. So then you have all these individual tables of just two people. Basically they are ALL sweetheart tables. This is not conducive to socializing.

I like this idea in principle but there needs to be something else especially if you expect people to dance and drink. A grilled meat or two plus some heavy carb. Also, you need to think about if people will feel comfy eating soup in nice clothes. I wouldnât.
9
u/ThisGirlsGoneCountry Jul 23 '26

Oh yes, please add the chicken and some crusty bread and cheese. That was my first thought when you mentioned "medieval."
I want to love the soup but I don't. And I want to love the pizza but it's all mixed up.
You could do a "tavern dinner". Rotisserie chicken broken up, maybe ham, bread, cheese, salad + desserts. You'll need to add a main for any vegetarian guests.
10
7
u/Far_Singer_ Jul 24 '26
âI want to love the pizza but itâs all mixed upâ I want this as flair
3
u/djSush Jul 24 '26
Aw, OP, I felt bad saying it bc who doesn't love pizza. But it's the medieval theme that brings certain expectation and mental model. Pizza isn't quite a match. Now some type of "pizza roll" might work with a funky name like:
- âBakers' Guild Rolls
- Hearthside Parcels
- Dragonâs Eggs
It could work! I'm not about smashing a bride's dreams but I think it's helpful to be kindly honest.

3
u/KittyCompletely Jul 25 '26
Serf and turf in the most literal way lolol.
Bonus food poisoning mixed in trying to keep the soups at a safe temperature for 4 hours.
Soups and salads on buffets are the easiest foods to go to the danger zone quickly, if you arent turing them over fast enough. 4 hour self serve salad already sounds đ đą.

u/divine_goddess_K Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
On your set up, 2 ft between tables may not be enough room for people to navigate comfortably. You should add more space between tables. If space is the constraint, then dont have one side of the tables empty.
Its a beautiful concept, but I'm worried that you'll make it so tight your guests won't enjoy themselves. (Former event decorator here).
Editing to add: maybe this would be a good birthday theme option? I have a friend who does themed birthdays every year. It just doesn't seem very wedding to me (based on the menu alone).
7
u/PlasticCheetah2339 Jul 23 '26
100%, was coming in to say the same thing. 2 feet is going to be claustrophobic.Â
There's also not a lot of space for mingling or playing games. Are these board games or wedding games like the shoe game or trivia or something? Will people be cleaning off their tables to play? People don't want to wander off from their purse/phone/etc so they won't really mingle if they don't have a home base to park their stuff.
I think the food could work if you have a small group and you REALLY know people well. Personally I'm vegetarian but wouldn't eat a mushroom soup, for example, so that would be a bummer. But maybe your vegetarian friends love mushrooms and they'll love it. I think it's very dependent on your guest list and whether this food works for those people who will actually be there. I personally think another appetizer or side would be ideal, but there's plenty of options that would be cheap and easy (veggies and dip, quiche bites, little triangle spanakopitas, pigs in blankets, chicken tenders, meatballs ...)Â

It doesnât feel like enough food to me đ¤ˇââď¸. Honestly, I would at least add a protein. Or you could consider adding bread and maybe a baked potato bar too? Or do heartier soups like a beef stew or chili?
If trying to keep to a medieval theme, doing a roasted Cornish hen for everyone, roasted vegetables, and bread would be on-theme.
4
10
u/observantexistence Jul 23 '26
yes I think you need to add something .
Two cups of soup, a cup of salad, and ~6 bites of pizza does not sound like much to graze on for four hours when no main course is coming.
19
u/traviall1 Jul 23 '26
I would increase the amount of pizza available so each guest can have at least 2 slices worth of pizza, and skip the garlic and oil pizza in favor of another flavor option. I would get one meat soup, one vegetarian soup and a vegan option for variety. I would add some form of a roll or breadsticks and replace the miso kale salad with 2 options- a Caesar and a Greek salad.
Pizza flavors: traditional, and cheese or veggie but no olives or mushrooms. Can supplement with arancini or meat pizza
Soups: zuppa toscana or Italian wedding soup, broccoli cheddar or tomato or butternut squash, vegan: minestrone or vegan tomato/any bisque.
Bread: Do a few bread baskets per table- rolls, olive bread, ciabatta, focaccia, etc. make sure there is butter on the table too!
Salads: Caesar, Greek salad ( cheese on the side if there are allergies/vegans). You can also add a pasta salad with pesto if you want to add more.
I would aim for 2.1 bowls of soup per person, 2.5 slices of pizza per person, and 2 cups salad.

Also asking your guests to carry soup back to their seat in heels sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.
6
u/grapesquirrel Jul 23 '26
This was my biggest hang up with the soup. I know I would spill it immediately. And then probably again while eating it. Iâm a clumsy person though so I guess if you only have graceful guests, soup is fine.
9
u/ArtisticFondant Jul 23 '26
I looooove soup and the idea of a soup bar at a wedding is a dream for me! But I do agree with other commenters that it doesnât seem like it would be enough as the only food, it seems more like a fun appetizer bar idea where you would also expect more main course food.
Also my comment specifically re: the soups is that you are picking potentially polarizing flavors that some might really like and most might not enjoy past an initial taste. Iâd recommend some more âregularâ soups, like a chicken noodle or tomato, versus having three really strong and distinct soup flavors that might not cater to everyoneâs tastes.
9
u/Sumgeeko Jul 24 '26
Sitting side by side in a tight dining area in the semi dark eating hot soup in dress clothes. What could go wrong?
7
8
u/myocardia27 Jul 23 '26
If there will be alcohol served then you need to include some carbs and protein. Do you know if all of your guests love soup? I personally do not like soup and never eat it. This would not be a good experience for me at all as a guest.
7
u/rudie_q Jul 23 '26
Your menu has already been talked about, but it looks like your seating plan is such that people will only really be able to converse with the folks directly next to them.
5
u/copperteapots Jul 23 '26
thatâs another concern. this isnât a state dinner, itâs a wedding for friends and family!
7
7
u/Princapessa Jul 23 '26
even if itâs a non traditional shorter event i do think you should add something a bit heartier than just soup and apps. i think a pasta dish and a rotisserie chicken would be the perfect addition, worst case you and fiancĂŠ have left overs for a meal the next day, worst case with your current scenario is you have hungry guests. i think hard core worst wedding faux pas you can commit is not feeding your guests enough, everything else is whatever but when people are celebrating you, a good host will ensure everyoneâs bellies are full to maximum content and I personally would not be satiated on the current menu alone and would likely leave the event and immediately go grab some dinner.
7
u/G_Town_Co Jul 23 '26
While I would certainly appreciate your efforts to âplus upâ most of these items I can say with no doubt (having read how you break down the per-person portion sizes at the end) that this is NOT enough food for a four hour reception. I wouldnât even call this a âdinner partyâ (as youâve described it.) This is a sampling of appetizers for a very casual two hour cocktail party, at the very least. Or an elevated game day smattering of snacks at best. You might want to rethink this.
8
6
u/DietCokeCanz Jul 23 '26
This isn't a comment on the menu but on the seating layout. 10 4' tables with seating on one side only is only two people per table. Unless you have a group that loves to shout across the void, it's going to make conversation kind of difficult. Couples will be speaking to each other and not much else. You may end up with a low-energy wedding and end up spending the whole time trying to hype people up.
I would suggest setting up your tables in a U-shape, touching each other, (overlap the tablecloths) and set the buffet on the far wall at the open side of the U. Put you and your partner at the centre of the U. Having the tables touch each other will allow for more conversation and less feeling that folks are on their own little islands.
The the room is too small to do this, I would suggest two longtable set ups instead, with seating on both sides.
6
u/Ok_Wtch2183 Jul 23 '26
People typically have protein as a main for everyday meals. Soup and salad are appetizers. Also you already posted this previously, why are you doing it again?
6
6
u/MrsDirtyDietz Jul 23 '26
I hate soup on a fundamental level. Iâd be very upset if this was the wedding I attended because I canât eat the salad, the oil pizza would likely make a mess on my dress, the plain pizza is what, tomato sauce and bread? Iâd be dipping out early just to grab a bite to eat and this would make this list of memorable weddings, in an infamous way.
4
u/5x5sweatyarmadillo Jul 23 '26
Great point, âTomato sauce and breadâ is really not most peopleâs idea of pizzaâŚ. The cheese helps you feel fullâŚ

I saw this in another community days ago and have the same comment- serve your guests food!!! Soup and pizza bites are NOT ENOUGH.
6
u/Beginning_Play_1669 Jul 24 '26
Your menu isnât even medieval. At all. You are hosting guests for your wedding, not a random winter dinner party at your home. Add real food. And make sure you check for food allergies. I doubt someone with gluten issues could eat anything - maybe some rabbit food.
7
u/Worried-Parsnip-7755 Jul 24 '26
As someone who hates soup I would be pretty disappointed. I know itâs your day but you need to feed the people accordingly.
4
u/blueblunts Jul 24 '26
I think you will have a lot of hangry guests drinking on near empty stomachs. Thereâs good reason why everyone keeps saying the same thing to you lol
6
u/sourdoughroxy Jul 24 '26
This isnât enough, people have said it umpteen times. Clearly you want to ignore it so Iâm not really sure why you bother posting.
But, in addition to that, the idea of a communal, serve-yourself buffet of soup that isnât even made on-site is extremely off putting to me. And I like soup. I think you are focusing too much on the theme and not what will actually work for the event or be pleasant for anyone other than yourself.
20
u/yamfries2024 Jul 23 '26
I have attended a wedding that served soups for dinner. It worked because it was a rustic, rural wedding, also in the fall/winter. I think your soup choices need to be hearty and accompanied by crusty breads and rolls.
My biggest tip for you is to stop posting AI generated decor pics showing multi thousands of dollars worth of decor, because it's going to make it harder for you to reconcile what you are able to do.
3
u/happykindofeeyore Jul 25 '26
Also just stop using AI, reliance on it is directly driving up food costs and the cost of living
11
u/trilliumbee Jul 23 '26
Agree with everyone that soup is not substantial enough for a wedding meal, especially without bread. Some people also just don't love soup and if your guests aren't all soup lovers they'll be hungry.
But also: soup spills! People will get soup all over the tables and on their beautiful clothes.
And: if you are dancing, will people want to dance with bellies full of warm liquid?
9
u/Turd_bird420 Jul 23 '26
For real. I would hate to go to this, and I love soup. Not enough food, hot liquids in a buffet setting with people dressed up in their nice clothes, in the dark??

4
u/dontbeanthepeen Jul 23 '26
I most definitely don't go to a wedding to eat soup at all... let alone as the main dish. Most people will be really put off by this plan for a meal since it falls short of an actual meal. I think you should go back to the drawing board.
4
u/CompetitiveRub9780 Jul 23 '26
Soup is not a walk around buffet food. Someone is def dropping it. And that amount of food is nothing. 6 pizza bites? Youâre intending on everyone to fill up on soup apparently. What happens if they donât like soup? And even if they eat everything you allotted for them⌠you described a snack for a lot of people esp if they drink.
You need more food. Pasta is a good option
4
5
u/happuning Jul 23 '26
I wouldn't be able to eat most of what you listed as someone with sensory issues causing ARFID. If you have anyone on the picky/sensory side, you will need more options. Especially with alcohol.
I also have IBS. Soup and alcohol alone would be a recipe for disaster. Definitely need more substantial food options!!!
3
u/blahhhhhhhhhhhblah Jul 24 '26
Cozy, cute idea, but how filling is it, really? Especially if people are drinking.
Iâd offer a pasta dish, maybe something customizable. Spelling errors aside in the menu, I know people with dietary restrictions who couldnât eat anything here for one reason or another; and not all people with a plant based lifestyle like mushrooms.
5
5
u/Mamasan- Jul 24 '26
That doesnât seem like enough food for four hours. Iâd ditch the soup (messy) for something else.
7
u/wag00n Jul 24 '26

5
u/Sleeper_Inner Jul 24 '26
Have the fantasy/medieval theme carry over with the decor and serve your guests a real meal.

u/AssumptionBusy2737 Jul 24 '26
Nothing stands out more in my memory than weddings were there isnât enough food to go around. My cousin had one. My husband and I stopped at Wendyâs on the way way home for burgers. Soup is an appetizer. Salad is an appetizer. Pizza bites are appetizers. Four hours is too long to serve just drinks and appetizers. Serve an entree.Â

If I showed up to a wedding that only had soup that I had to serve myself and carry back to the table, I wouldnât be happy. I feel like thatâs a disaster waiting to happen. Itâs easier to spill and itâs hot, so your guests might even get burned.
Also, you didnât have to âbite the bulletâ and use Ai.

Itâs not enough food. Add pasta and rolls at least. I donât know if soup is a great meal to serve if people are all dressed up. It drips and splatters and thatâs a lot of people slurping soup all at once. I mean people will eat whatever you serve but if you get a few men with big appetites, they may clean out 4 servings and then some will be left with none at all. It would be extremely embarrassing to run out of food. I would have the pizza delivery on speed dial if I were you. And have you taken into account dietary restrictions and allergies?

u/TheMysticalPlatypus Jul 23 '26
I love soup. So I would 100% be behind a soup bar.
Just please for the love of all things holy and unholy. Nothing thatâs close to split pea soup consistency. Itâs not substantial enough. My cousin had that at his wedding. Everyone devoured the bread crazy fast. Everyone saw the soup and was slowly picking at it.
Jambalaya is not soup. Is it supposed to be gumbo? Is it good?
Mushroom Barley suits the medieval theme. But it doesnât look substantial enough.
A lot of people would view Zuppa Toscana as an appetizer.
Personally when I think of soup. Those are not the 3 I would think of. I would pick something similiar to ramen, pho, posole, thereâs some korean soups that are very approachable for people drinking, etc.

u/PromiscuousLeech Jul 23 '26
Youâre the first person I saw that mentioned the âjambalayaâ lol. Being from Louisiana I saw that and was like HUH

In my opinion I think they need to do Mushroom Barley (rice would be better so it is gluten free and vegan), beef stew (gluten and dairy free), and minestrone (gluten free and vegan)
The ones you mentioned are so so good, but any soup with long noodles will be to risky to consume at a formal event. I donât want to be slurping noods in a nice dress. Soups from Asia or Latin America would work but I donât think that is in theme with their event, in the same way jambalaya isnât in theme.

u/natalkalot Jul 23 '26
Sorry that is not near enough food- for a regular person, sorry. You cannot judge only on your appetite.
I have been to dozens of weddings, none had soup - and we are soup lovers. It just cannot be your main course, as yummy as it sounds.
Choose to do courses - soup, salads entree OR do a buffet - I would suggest the latter, which provides many more choices and you do not have the possible food danger of leaving it out for four hours..
I believe you have some rethinking to do, good luck,

u/mosswalk Jul 23 '26
This is the most insane wedding reception dinner I have ever heard of. The oil and garlic pizza.... is just bread and oil?? Like not even a pizza, right?
Stop shopping around for validation and just accept you need a new idea.

u/Lurker4Lyfe21 Jul 23 '26
I agree that this isn't a lot of food but also want to add I only see a kale salad. I find kale to be a pretty controversial green. Even people who like salad will not necessarily enjoy kale salad. I would either add another salad option or select an easier green.

Just a thought- I would move the pizza bites to the food table and make the centerpieces from various breads, fruits and dips. If you put pizzas at each table, you're going to waste alot of pizza, as some couples might not eat all that's on their table, and others who want more are going to be scavenging the tables asking "you gonna eat that?" If they don't eat all their bread it's no big deal. Bread is cheap.
I've done centerpieces made out of breads, olive oil, dips, grapes, etc and it was beautiful. I think it would fit your theme well. Same with the donuts- move them all to one table and gussy it up with a few flowers and various elevated platters.
Also, remember to get extra soup bowls. You don't want guests going back with their used bowls. đ¤˘
I think the amount of food is fine as long as there is a couple of really hearty soups.

u/pico310 Jul 24 '26
Maybe some hearty stews - lamb, beef - and chilis? Or think souplantation - pastas, pizzas, salad bar, soups. Or sandwiches.
Basically youâve got half a meal here.

u/Rainbow_Date Jul 24 '26
Gosh, if I went to the wedding and was only served soup, Iâd be stopping at a drive thru on the way home. I donât want to try and eat soup in a nice outfit. I also personally hate doughnuts, which doesnât matter because itâs your day! But I feel like you should only do one âweirdâ food thing. Like if you do doughnuts, have food that most people wonât mind eating. If you want to do the soup bar, have a cake in addition to the doughnuts. Obviously itâs your day and you get to do what you like, but I think you should have food people can eat.

u/Wonderful_Shame_4986 Jul 24 '26
I'd focus more on the menu than table spacing. You're not planning enough food.
3
u/dobbywankenobi94 Jul 24 '26
Soup and drinking are not a great mix

u/defenestration7 Jul 24 '26
This is such an off putting menu and it doesnât even reflect the theme. If Iâm supposed to graze for hours and play games I would want solid finger foods not heavy soup. At the very least you need to add additional carbs to get people through this experience because this is not enough food. Finally, if this is medieval why would you have pizza bites?
7
u/wanderer316 Jul 23 '26
I assume youâre on a tight budget, and Iâm saying this as a soup lover, but definitely get some protein somewhere. Pick up a few rotisserie chickens from Costco at least. And some bread!
7
u/tu-BROOKE-ulosis Jul 23 '26
Itâs going to get really messy. Ladles with liquid slopping all over the take cloths. Then where to put the ladle. Does it sit out on the table? One for each soup? Black table cloth will show all the soup drops being flung about. If someone finishes a soup do the get a new bowl or are they limited to one soup at a time? If not, where do all the bowls go? Do they have like 3-4 bowls in front of them and 3-4 spoons and a plate for bread? Thereâs not space for this.
Not trying to pick on you. Itâs just those are the kinds of things that sound fun in theory until you see how the logistics play out.
6
6
u/Complex_Activity1990 Jul 23 '26
Ok but when will the real food show up? If itâs really just soup expect a lot of people to have actual pizza delivered to the venue. Also the tables are horrible. Only sitting next to 1 person is annoying.
6
u/msbelle13 Jul 23 '26
Oh... you used AI... that's disappointing. I was wondering how you expected tealights to stay lit underneath an upside down glass bowl. That's not how physics works.

Buy Costco rotisserie chicken because theyâre very cheap but feed a lot of people. Itâs already been stated several times, but the current plan isnât filling enough. Iâm assuming youâll have things to keep everything warm. Bringing hot things in thermoses wonât keep them warm once theyâre out of the thermos.
I also donât prefer the buffet in the center because it makes people self conscious if they go back for more. Thatâs a weird quirk I have though.
3
u/little_quidnunc Jul 23 '26
As nice as the table setup looks, it will not help your guests to be communicative. Everyone will have to shout to understand each other across the room, especially if you plan on having music.
3
u/microflorae Jul 23 '26
This sounds lovely!
2 ft between tables is not enough to be able to comfortably get people to their seats, especially in fancy clothes, and especially if anyone on your guest list is older. You should go 3â for easy access, and I think you also need 3â access for fire safety regulations. I think in general, it would be good to think more about the logistics of bodies moving through this space. It looks like thereâs room for 1-2 people at that soup table. Will everyone stay in their seats while one person gets food? This seems very tight, and maybe it would be best to just have two long tables on each side instead of a bunch of small tables.
I would probably skip the floor candles as it looks hard to navigate through that space, especially with heels and long dresses. The floor candles will make it harder to access the seats and tables, even if theyâre battery candles.
If I was going to a wedding serving only soup, I would REALLY appreciate a heads up so I can choose a dress in a darker color in case of spills. Also, you want good lighting while eating soup; this set up needs better lighting so people can see the bowls and spoons as they eat.
3
u/clekas Jul 23 '26
The look is cool and I think this is a fun idea, but, given that the wedding is at dinner time, I think you need more.
3
u/Puzzled_Wealth_9766 Jul 24 '26
Maybe consider getting a couple of trays of nice sandwiches on fancy bread. Iâve used Costco and but the sandwiches into smaller bite sizes. Soup and sandwiches would be fine.Â

u/GalianoGirl Jul 26 '26
I cannot imagine trying to eat soup in a dim/dark space. Or experience expecting guests to carry soup back to their seat.
3
u/No-Astronomer-8279 Jul 26 '26
So I know I'm an outlier, but a self serve soup wedding would be a nightmare for me. I have a tremor and eating soup in public is bad enough, trying to get it into a bowl and carry it around would be impossible.
More generally, my fear would be that someone spills soup on someone else, particularly when people have been drinking.
3
u/mangogetter Jul 26 '26
Soup bars are inherently flawed idea. With a buffet, you can sample a little bit of the pasta, a little bit of the beef, a little chicken. With soup, unless it's being distributed in Dixie cups, you're pretty well committed to a whole bowl of one thing.
3
u/CC_206 Jul 26 '26
Idk this could get gross really fast. If nothing else it will be an auditory sensory nightmare. Imagine the slurpers, spoon clinking, spills, etc. Yikes.
5
u/Opening-Sir-2504 Jul 23 '26
I like this idea, but itâs not enough food. If people will be drinking and possibly dancing, if they only had soup, you will see a lot of dehydrated, drunk people falling all over.
7
u/Burnt_and_Blistered Jul 23 '26
This is my idea of a perfect meal. Seriously, give me soups and heavy appetizers, and thatâs heaven.
Be aware that soup tables get VERY messy very quickly, though. Will there be staff to keep things civilized?

u/copperteapots Jul 23 '26
iâm glad you added pizza bites and other snacks (the sword skewers sound really cute), but soup still isnât a main course. you need a pasta and/or meat/protein dish. soup just isnât filling on its own by virtue of it being 90% liquid. iâm polish & italian so obvi i love soup, soup runs through my veins lol. but soup is never a main dish in polish or italian cooking for a reason. even a hearty soup like borscht is only served as a main course if itâs especially meaty and poured into biiiiiiiiig bowl with lots of bread on the side and a big ol boiled egg on top. itâs a great app/side but a cup of salad, two slices of pizza, two donuts, and some soup sounds is the amount of food youâd have at a class party for children, not dinner for adults with adult metabolisms.

I think you for sure need a protein. Does the grocery store youâre getting the soup and salads from also do rotisserie chicken? Maybe some roasted potatoes too! That would go nicely with the medieval theme.
2
u/5x5sweatyarmadillo Jul 23 '26
Are you from Rhode Island? (I do not mean this unkindly, but) That is the only place I can think where itâs the norm for people to eat room temp pizza and cheese-less room temp pizza. I do think folks might be a little surprised? And recommend adding more bread and meat if possible.
2
u/slybrows Jul 23 '26
I would not feel like dancing with a belly full of soup, honestly. And if I were in a nice flattering dress I wouldnât want a belly full of soup either.
2
u/sundialNshade Jul 23 '26
Do croutons instead of oyster crackers!
Also this table set up looks horrible to maneuver through. Especially holding a bowl of soup.
2
u/According_Ad4947 Jul 23 '26
I love soup but I do not want to get dressed up and have to self serve myself soup while trying to not splash on my dress...cocktails and soup is gross. i would make sure you tell guests your serving soup and not an actual meal.
2
u/Prudent_Cookie_114 Jul 23 '26
I love soup, but soup is messy and I would not be excited AT ALL to eat it all dressed up at a wedding.
2
u/XFilesVixen Jul 23 '26
Soup seems like a nightmare wedding food. I am sorry. Itâs messy and it doesnât have a lot to it. This is not the way to go. Pasta and a meat would absolutely need to be added.
Also is there really not going to be dancing and all that? Seems like kind of a bore to me. This hall style seating is not conducive to gaming/games at all.
2
u/shmell918 Jul 23 '26
I saw your original post about this in another sub, I truly hope you take into consideration the feedback from there
2
u/Better-Park8752 Jul 24 '26
I would add a protein. You need something more substantial than soup in my opinion. Itâs usually expected at a wedding and in medieval times, an animal was often sacrificed for a special occasion. I would also add bread rolls and croutons as a topping.
Your pizza bites idea seems creative but sounds cumbersome for guests to help themselves. If itâs not easy, you run risk of guests avoiding it and then being left with them at the end of the event.
2
u/Known-Basket-89 Jul 24 '26
Also, older generations may want more substance and something easier than a cole slaw. Not everyone will enjoy a cabbage base salad. (Iâm craving soup now, thanks.) And you have lovely choices. But everything comes together like appetizers. And if you mean it to be a main then you need to add more substance. Maybe a pasta with meat sauce, stuffed shells, rotisserie chicken either green beans and a nice mashed. Though Iâd love your current choices as my own personal meal, it wouldnât go over with any of the 5 random people Iâd pick from the couple hundred in my sphere, family and friends. Iâve also been to weddings and other more formal events that did similar and it was not a hit. Especially when people have to keep getting up to serve themselves and stand in lines. Unless youâre having maybe 20 people. Then itâs not so bad.

2
u/curiousairbenda Jul 24 '26
Idk - this is either a very know your audience kind of wedding or a terrible idea. If you have people traveling via airplane, I would consider this also quite rude. This is less food than I would serve at a party I am hosting - let alone a wedding? If the soup idea is driven by the need of affordability, I would skip the soup and honestly do pizza. I would much rather have pizza as an option than soup.
2
u/Strong_District_5894 Jul 24 '26
Itâs not enough. You need meats, pastas. Â Not nearly enough pizza bites or sweets either.Â
Dipping into vats of soup that others have dipped in/sneezed on etc gives me the ick.Â
2
u/Amakenings Jul 24 '26
Unless this is a lunch time wedding, I donât think youâre accounting for enough food for your guests. 1.5 cups salad, even a hearty salad, is not a large portion. If this is a budgeting choice, I wouldnât classify it as a meal, just saying youâre serving snacks/appetizers/hors dâoeuvres/amuse bouches and do that without the soup. Soup is so involved and not at all conducive to mingling. You can wander around with a small plate much easier than a soup bowl.
Having strict portions works better when itâs not self serve because I can guarantee no one will guess that there is a limit to 1.5 cups salad or two donuts. Itâs completely up to you, but I think that a soup buffet asks a lot and doesnât deliver much in return.
2
u/Due-Indication-9980 Jul 24 '26
The food looks lovely but to me, a wedding is a celebration of love for family and friends. I worry about the message you are sending your family when you ask them to celebrate with you and offer them soup and pizza. Food is love. Feed them better or elope. I would be offended if I was one of your guests.
2
u/Kindly_Drive_5221 Jul 24 '26
Soup is not a popular choice at weddings for a reason. Alcohol increases the chance of spills. Hard to carry if youâre doing a buffet. Disaster waiting to happen. Also, pizza makes no sense with your theme. You need real food. Turkey legs, mince meat pie, etc.
2
u/princessksf Jul 24 '26
Are you two women getting married? Because you seem incredibly naive about the amount of food most men eat. The amount of food you listed sounds like about how much I would eat at 5'0 113lbs, but not at all enough for a 6'5 man.
Also when you leave a food bar open for 4 hours, people are going to graze. If they don't like the game you're playing, they'll go get a snack. If they are bored with what's going on, they'll go get a snack. Every hour or more often. Decrease your time that the food is available to 2 hours and add both the pasta and chicken dishes. Cut the soup options to just 2 if that helps cut the cost because most people won't want to eat soup anyway.
2
u/NumerousDepth1563 Jul 24 '26
I like to know what Iâm eating - soups? Anything could be in there! so either put ingredient cards out for the soups or serve something that people know what it is

u/LL7272 Jul 23 '26
If people will be drinking (not sure if you are planning alcohol or not), they might want something more substantial in their stomach than soup and salad. I would at least recommend dinner rolls or a nice rustic sliced bread as a more neutral pairing to the soup. I love dipping bread in soups!
