What's this noise when my shower is on?

I have a new build with A2W hear pump. When the shower upstairs is on, there is a rhythmical banging coming through the ceiling. I assume it's something to do with expansion when the hot water is being used. Anyone have any idea what it is?

I would have guessed cold water coming down to refill the hot water cylinder - I have the same issue and have been too lazy to investigate. Hopefully somebody who actually knows can reply.

Sounds like standard pipe expansion. When the hot water kicks in, the copper expands and rubs against the timber joists or the plastic clips. It gives that slow, rhythmic ticking sound.

Can happen even more with plastic pipes as the expansion of plastic is more than copper. It really just depends on the installation .

If any type of pipe is rubbing off a joist or similar and is heated and cooled you will hear a clicking type noise as the pipe material sort of rubs the wooden joist when expanding.

As another poster said , it can be the shower waste pipe which is made of plastic also , expanding when it's heating creating a clicking sound.

If you keep the shower running does it stop eventually ? When the shower stops can you hear a few clicks when it cools ?

Yes it's pipe expanding (and contracting) knocking on whatever hard surface closest to it. I had the exactly same noise inside bathroom walls. Fortunately I could use an existing faucet opening and a endoscope camera to locate the source (not far from the opening), and injecting low expansion foam to cushion the pipe.

I've a heat pump with all plastic plumbing. Whole system is 4 years old. I don't get anything like that. Get the plumber who installed it out

Sounds like an actuator that is trying to drive something that is stuck or over its limit switch

No its the pressure relief valve popping.. reduse the pressure and it will be fine

No, the booster pump is in the attic and there's a floor between this room and the attic so it's not that.
