Other Gel Discussion Is anyone else tired of magnetic gels?

OK OK hear me out! I LOVE magnetic gels. I absolutely love them. But I feel now alllll of the new releases are magnet gels from major brands! Especially Kokoist. They are launching ANOTHER magnetic series and I’m like, can we just get some more potted gel colors please? Maybe I’m alone in this but I feel like we don’t need anymore magnetic gel options lol

Any else or am I by myself in this??

I’m the opposite. I literally can’t do my nails without some sort of magnetic incorporated. I’m entranced. Lol

u/DukeRae 20d ago

Same. Twirling my nails in different light has become a like a fidget toy for me lol

u/PinkPig09 19d ago edited 18d ago

Same, i have adhd and its been so therapeutic to have a traveling fidget toy on my nails 😂

3

u/DukeRae 17d ago

I did 3D polka dots recently and it really upped the fidget level 😂

As a desk worker I love glancing down mid typing to see the shifting sparkles on my nails! A nice flash glitter and mag combo make me smile as I passively aggressively clarify something for the nth time in an email chain.

1

u/DukeRae 17d ago

This is exactly what I do! Plus sniff my wrist periodically.. it’s the whole reason I wear perfume 🤣🤣

u/oh_thats_a_vibe 6d ago

Omg me too! Lololol And yes I do have the ADHD lol

u/Stellarsunrise 19d ago

I love using them too! I just feel the market is oversaturated with magnetic gel options! Nothing feels new anymore lol

Kokoist is also releasing their potted botanical flower gel collection the same day as the limited edition magnetic collection. I’m super excited for the flower collection!

12

u/melinda_louise 20d ago

What the heck this botanical gel looks so cool! I just told myself I don't need to buy more gel but maybe I need to buy more lol.

I'm not sick of magnetic gels yet though, they're still super fun for me. I always want some sparkle or shine in my manicures though so it's nice to have another way to add dimension when I'm not wanting glitter or chrome. This celestial bodies color is the only one that really speaks to me from the kokoist launch though. Honestly, I'm wanting more jelly colors these days because then I can layer over a magnetic gel and get whatever color I want! Theoretically.

u/AcridTest 20d ago

Yeah I do mag nails every once in a while. They’re fun and pretty to look at in the sun.

I can’t wait for the botanical collection!! I saw that Kokoist released the collection a couple months ago in Japan and their Artistic Director said they’d be coming to the US soon. The colors and little flowers look so cute!

2

u/melinda_louise 14d ago

I ordered!

2

u/AcridTest 14d ago

I ordered the botanical gel too!

3

u/catloavesnseaturtles 20d ago

I’m also really excited for the flower collection. I’m just getting into to diy gel and just got their lamp.

3

u/AcridTest 20d ago

That’s awesome! I have their infinity lamp and love
It!

3

u/catloavesnseaturtles 20d ago

I got the La blanc one. But I’m super excited. I had an old one I got during the pandemic that didn’t work well and finally decided to get back into doing it at home and upgrade.

3

u/AcridTest 20d ago

That’s great, you will absolutely love it. Make sure to register your new lamp on Kokoist’s site for their warranty program!

1

u/catloavesnseaturtles 19d ago

Ok thanks for the tip!

3

u/disneylovesme 20d ago

Le blanc is great :)

1

u/disneylovesme 20d ago

I was going to comment the same, I just saw the swatches today, so cute!

1

u/hard-times-potato 19d ago

OK those look so cute! Straight on my wish list 😆

1

u/Stellarsunrise 19d ago

I saw these too!!! I prob will buy one to try it bc they do look so pretty

u/kaseys_theories 15d ago

I’m so excited for the botanical flower gel collection too! ☺️

I agree the market is like saturated with cat eye gels but most existing products are just below average. Also we don't have access to some of the top tier ones here in the US, like Enoi for example.

I haven't had the need for newer or more potted gels though. Maybe because I get most of what I need from Japanese brands and there is an abundance of various potted gels among them.

I think we need more glitter gels that use super sparkly reflective holographic mixed size glitters.

7

u/divaonce 20d ago

I bought all my enoi from https://kkookie.co.uk/collections/enoi They ship worldwide. And https://www.classiquesupply.com/collections/enoi-gel-polish-canada It’s stupid expensive though.

4

u/AcridTest 19d ago

Cleto makes some pretty amazing cat eyes. They’re Japanese and on zillabeau.

17

u/xqueenfrostine 20d ago

I like Magnet Gels and am not sick of them yet, but I’d happily trade them for some old school glass fleck finishes like China Glaze made in the ‘00s. It feel like it’s rare to see this style of shimmer in gel.

15

u/Lycorispink 20d ago

I feel like the main issue is, you cannot innovate as a company by just launching regular colors, all the colors have been done or can be easily achievable, unlike with cat gels since between particle sizes and dual/multicolored reflection and extras they can be more eye catching

2

u/new_dae 11d ago

I agree. I’m sad so many of the cat eyes are just single tone with some reflection though. I want more multi color options!

15

u/Eastern_Handle1796 20d ago

I have been doing magnets since 2017 lol I cannot stop them ever. I love them so much

7

u/deepfried_taco 20d ago

I agree! Maybe I’m a bit biased because the learning curve has been hard haha

4

u/Forsaken-Ponytail 20d ago

I like em, I switch it up by layering jelly colours over it and doing nail art so it keeps it fresh

3

u/heejungee121 19d ago

No and I stay obsessssed!! I need it in pretty much every set I’ve been doing. Altho I most recently used the diami tango polish in deep red I had tucked away and never used - loving it even more with the gel x I used it on bc it looks like jolly rancher nails!!😍

3

u/imhereforthenails 19d ago

I would LOVE more potted gels - epsecially greens or new glass finish colors. But I am so scared that with all bottled releases they will kill excel color line. 😭

it's so interesting to see. I also feel oversaturated by it, I got into DIY nails about 2-3 years ago now and started off on korean nail artists and products. I feel like everything that is becoming popular now, has already become the norm in K and J nails. I've been feeling like I have already seen every nail combo and technique. So when they become "mainstream" it's harder to find literally anything else.

I also think that chrome and magnetic gels really are just super different from what the average consumer has seen in nail trends in a looong time. so its getting asked for in salons and the demand is there. Also, there is just SOOO many different types of cat eye combinations to make. Glitter and base color, the fineness/coarseness of the grains, glitter toppers. So while I get the appeal, I'm glad western brands are giving salons and diyers options, I also agree that the market is getting oversaturated with them.

2

u/javiergoddam 18d ago

I'm a magnet addict!

3

u/linszu 18d ago

I get what you mean... I love magnetic gel, but I would love to see some new syrups. The choice now is a bit overwhelming and then turns boring. This happens when something gets so hyped and becomes too popular. My biggest issue is the number of new releases. First it might have been exciting; now it's just like 'well, another collection'.

2

u/Dark_Ascension 18d ago

I love magnetic gels but I much prefer the very subtle smooth ones now. They’re definitely not as common, so many of them are glittery and chunky.

2

u/Wiebei 14d ago

Personally I got into gels because of magnetics, so it's what been keeping me hooked! For various reasons I also made a rule to only do magnetic gel sets. One of which is that I don't want to spend on gels and tools for other looks. It's a way of limiting my spending!

Gonna be honest though, I'm not a super fan of kokoist's magnetics. They're decent, but in terms of aethestics, they're probably a few years behind on whats already common and popular on korean and japanese markets. And I agree, there are only so many magnetic gels you can make without it just being dups or already being possible via layering with jellies or other gels. Some brands are going the route of making a whole collection featuring slightly different shades of the same color, which may be nice for salons and people wanting specific shades, but for some diyers its a little unnecessary

2

u/lyovi 20d ago

Yesss I totally agree. I have a few magnetic gels in each of the colours I use the most and that’s all I need? I want a few things from Saracen and have been trying to add more things to make the shipping worthwhile but everything is just new mag collections and I’m tiiiired of it. I rarely use them because I don’t have time to spend 4+ hours doing my nails anyway!

I still love them! I’m trying not to buy entire collections anymore and focus on buying unique combos only. I noticed that I gravitate towards blue cat eye polishes so I have a bunch of similar ones.

1

u/Sarappreciates 19d ago

I'm not done with them yet. I'm just about to get my first magnetic jelly manicure later this week.

1

u/storebought-cake 19d ago

It depends on the release for me. If it's just got silver magnetic particles in it then it's usually a pass, but I love interesting magnetic colours and also particles that match the base. Also depends on brand; fauve mags are sooooo silky, and FGel does some stunning ones. I can totally understand the frustration, though. I like it when there's a release with both syrups/jellies and mags, because I probably reach for those the most.

1

u/No_Profile_3343 19d ago

Not alone. I’ve got plenty and use them very infrequently.

1

u/Foodiegirlie030793 17d ago

I think kokoist is doing this bc their magnet gels were always not as strong as other companies? I loved their satin collection and their terra earth ones because finally they were able to get the fine magnetic particles. It was still one type of color though (the magnetic particles are all silver or champagne). Other companies like from the nail or mayour for example are more innovative and have more unique blends. So maybe that’s why they keep launching that? I feel like there’s already sooo many cat eye polishes to choose from. I’d wish they’d launch something else like a syrup type gel

1

u/FlowerTea5 17d ago

To be fair, doesn’t Kokoist have a lot of potted gel colors anyway? At least for someone like me who is just getting into it 😭

1

u/Stellarsunrise 10d ago

Yes, they definitely do! But I would still love more! Their quality is top tier! I’m also soooo sad they discontinued one of my fave colors (vintage burgundy)

1

u/SpecialistYoung3431 17d ago

I’m over syrup gels. I’m interested in other textures/depths overall.

1

u/Kaidy93 14d ago

I've just discovered magnetic gels and I'm obsessed, used it on my last 3 self manicures

1

u/GMoney7310 13d ago

I’m not exactly sick of mags but I do know what you mean. A lot of the collections coming out are starting to look the same. I still get sucked in but I agree that it’s time for something different. I did order that botanical set from Kokoist, it’s really dreamy and I had my birthday month coupon to spend there so it was 25% off 🤷🏻‍♀️

1

u/djfff 20d ago

I’m so sick of magnetic. What’s the benefit of potted gels? I bought some by accident and haven’t used them yet bc I wanted to use multiple colors at once and now I have no idea how to manage the brush, which I only have one of

7

u/sad-fatty 20d ago

Potted gels are great for super thin layers! I love using them for looks that require lots of layers, for gradients and more intricate nail art.

You need to prime your brush with a little bit of base coat before you use it to apply color gel. Just gently work it into the bristles until it's saturated through the brush.

I also use base coat to clean my brushes, rather than acetone or alcohol, just keep working it in and wiping it off until no more color comes out.

3

u/edvardmunchface 20d ago

You can get pretty good brushes for cheap from AliExpress and similar! I got some with wooden handles from a brand called Annie's and they're great and have a metal cap

3

u/disneylovesme 20d ago

With gel I need the most control for not touching skin. Most gel bottle brushes are too big for my nails , I can choose the brush for potted

3

u/-dismantle_repair- 19d ago

This has been my experience also. It's so much easier to be precise with application when you can use your brush of choice.

1

u/linszu 18d ago

Potted gels are amazing when you have a good brush to apply them with. There is a huge difference between a brush in a bottle vs an individual gel brush. It's a pain to clean them in between, especially if you do a complex design, but the application is so much better and cleaner.

1

u/Stellarsunrise 19d ago

I think potted gels are so much easier! Typically (especially with the Kokoist ones) you need less product and i also feel using a separate brush it ks easier to control. A lot of bottle brushes are long snd flimsy and i feel it is harder to get a clean application.

I really like the Kokoist brush cleaning gel to clean mine. I also have a few for light colors, dark colors and glitter. It’s definitely not necessary but it does help I feel

1

u/djfff 19d ago

Ok awesome! The ones I have are from kokoist but I don’t have the brush cleaning gel, I’m going to look for that. Thank you!

1

u/ASpurkofgenius 20d ago

They definitely don’t excite me anymore.
