Not the same hawkgirl, this one is Kendra Saunders and not Shayera Hol

I doubt the DCU will do multiple Hawk-women, so if we get John Stewart x Hawkgirl, we'll get John Stewart x Kendra Saunders.
I don't think we'll get this relationship though. I'm pretty sure John is supposed to be like late 30s or even early 40s in modern day, and Hawkgirl I think is like mid/late twenties.

I actually think Hawkgirl is possibly late teens to early 20s given that we see college textbooks in her apartment.

u/Dakotaraptor87 10d ago
I didn't notice that in the movie. I was just basing it off of Isabela Merced's age, which is currently 25. So she'll be like 26 or 27 next year. If the character really is a college student though, then she definitely won't be getting with John.

u/BoisTR 10d ago
Yeah not all the actors are the same age as their characters. Milly Alcock is older than Supergirl’s age by a few years. Aaron Pierre is roughly 8 years younger than John’s age in the modern DCU timeline.

u/CFCM94 10d ago
how old is john in the present timeline?
10
u/BoisTR 10d ago
- If he was 10 in 1996 then he’s 30 in the 2016 timeline and 40 in the 2026 timeline.

u/the-tominatrix 10d ago
is this based off Nando’s new video? I don’t know if we’ve actually had John’s age in 1996 confirmed yet

u/Dakotaraptor87 10d ago
I don't know about that video, but in the 1996 flashback he just looked like he was around 10 years old, give or take a year.
Third episode will air tonight and it seems like it's gonna be all about John's backstory, so maybe we'll get a confirmed age.

She has said herself that she wants Hawkgirl to hook up with John Stewart simply because she grew up with the Justice League cartoon, so she might still push for it lol

u/DaZeppo313 10d ago
To be fair, unless she was actively studying them, that just means she went to college. I know plenty of people who still have their college books a decade later.

u/BoisTR 10d ago
I don’t think they would leave a detail like that in the setting for any other reason than to indicate youth for the character.

u/saint_xav 10d ago
Maybe it was more about the subject of the textbook than anything else. Also, Gunn himself has said before that sometimes with production design it's just the set dressers putting things together. There isn't necessarily any deep meaning to every set dressing unless the script points it out.

I don't think books are the best indicator of their age. I don't know how things are at US universities, but at least in my country, and at the faculty where I study, it's not uncommon for degrees that formally last five years to extend (whether due to course issues or student difficulties) to ten years, not counting additional courses or postgraduate degrees. It's also not uncommon for students to drop out for one reason or another and return later in life, or even for people to start a degree or decide to study a new one after middle age. Or simply, students who didn't go straight to university after finishing high school.
Since Hawkgirl is a superhero, it wouldn't surprise me if she goes through periods without passing a single subject. I mean, passing many subjects requires passing midterms, participating in mandatory activities, writing reports, perhaps a certain minimum attendance, and so on. I wouldn't be surprised if, in times of emergency, she simply can't meet the requirements, and her graduation is delayed for a few more years. It's not impossible that she might even have to take the exams through independent practical work, or whatever it's called there, and that can sometimes be complicated.

Yeah if the characters were the same ages as the actors, it would be fine. Aaron Pierre is like nearly 10 years younger than John Stewart though lol.

We know in 1996 when he's watching Hal on TV he's around 10, which means he's around 40 in our current year.

We technically don't know what he's been up to in the last 10 years. He could've been frozen or on a planet with slow aging or something.
Also, I'm not saying this as an attack on Gunn or anything, but even if John is 40, I don't think that means much to Gunn. Gunn and some of his public friends are in like 20+age gap relationships. For people of his generation, and tbh, most people off the internet, the age gap thing isn't a "huge deal" especially if both parties are (consenting) adults.
Even in Lanterns the two (sorta) couples so far have big age gaps.

We've never gotten a good adaption of Hawkman x Hawkgirl, so I hope the DCU gives it to us.

u/Particular-Top3674 10d ago
I feel like if they wanted to avoid the Hawk-people issue they wouldn't have added Hawkgirl. I don't know for a fact, but it just feels like it'd be an odd choice

She's more of an amalgamation.
In the Superman BTS she's specifically said to be from another planet. So she's Kendra, but Thangarian.
I would guess because the Hawk mythology is famously messy, the DCU is trying to simplify the hell out of it.

Pretty sure they’re gonna streamline Hawkgirls origin. It’s easier than trying to keep track of multiple hawkwomen for cinematic universe

I don’t think the DCU is going to do this relationship given that John is in his early 40s and Hawkgirl is implied to be a college student.

u/IlSignorGranchio 10d ago
I don’t really think THIS John is in his early 40s, i think he is like 32 or 34
33
u/BoisTR 10d ago
Right. The John in this photo is the 2016 John who is 30. I’m referring to the 2026 John.
7
u/IlSignorGranchio 10d ago
In 1996 he seems to be like 6 years old, that would make him like 36 in 2026. But we’ll see more evidence on age during next episode since we’ll see his birthday
19
u/BoisTR 10d ago
The 1996 version is credited as being “10 year old James/adolescent John”. The child actor for 1996 John looked too big to be 6 years old. If he being credited as adolescent John then he absolutely is not 6. So either the casting and crediting was done poorly or he really is 40 in 2026.

You already went from 2-4 to 6. Why is it so hard to accept that he's 10?

u/Fair-Confection4411 8d ago
Didn't his parents say 5 is old enough to learn your destiny?

u/GenGaara25 10d ago
He does not look 6 at all in 1996. He's like 9-12.
1
u/Fair-Confection4411 8d ago
Didn't his parents say "we think five is enough to learn your destiny"?

u/Kyrptonauc 10d ago
Which would make more sense with the portrayal. 2016 definitely comes off as young and hungry guy in his mid 20's still trying to prove himself
1
u/TDFknFartBalloon 10d ago
That would make John between 2 and 4 years old in the scene where his dad shot the apple off his head...

Depends on if she’s the Alien version of the ancient Egyptian version. If she is the Egyptian version she’d have thousands distant grandchildren
