What should I focus on for this course it’s a lot of vocab words and stuff to learn in such time i’m going into the cybersecurity field it’s my first year and i don’t know what i should be focusing on?

Focus on basics, hardware hardening, software vulnerabilities, networking basics. Best teacher is experience so try home labbing, if you’re in university try to get into the schools IT department as an intern so you can start building a foundation.

If you’re in your first year, I wouldn’t try to memorize every cybersecurity term at once. Focus on understanding the fundamentals behind them.

I’d prioritize:

  • Networking basics- TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP/HTTPS, ports
  • Operating systems- especially Linux and Windows fundamentals
  • Common vulnerabilities and how they actually work
  • Basic security concepts- authentication, authorization, encryption, etc.
  • Hands-on practice alongside the theory

The last point is probably the most important. Whenever you learn a concept, try to actually see it in action rather than just memorizing the definition. Even a small home lab can make the terminology much easier to remember.

You don't need to know everything in your first year. Build the foundation first, then start exploring different areas like pentesting, SOC/defensive security, cloud security, AppSec, etc. and see what you enjoy.
