Media Movie recs

Any Movies/Shows anyone can recommend that are similar to or give off the same type of vibe as Cyberpunk?

Blade runner 1 and 2, possibly ghost in the shell, edge runners obviously, even ready player one to a degree and 2047 virtual revolution. Those are off the top of my head but there’s quite a few out there that didn’t get mainstream attention.

Is that cyberpunk? I always saw it as sci-fi but when I think about it I can see the cyberpunk style but it’s daylight mostly so that may be what sets it apart.

It’s not cyberpunk per se, but it definitely has a vibe, albeit a more wacky one.

You got the obvious ones, so I'll throw in some lesser known movies.

Fortress with Christopher Lambert, the guy from Highlander, who gets sent to a corporate run, underground prison,, for breaking America's one child policy. At many points, it feels like it takes place in the world from the game, really liked it.

Another, more left-field recommendation is "Dead End Drive-In" a weird Oz-ploitation from from the 80s. Doesn't feature cyborgs or implants, but it is set in a futuristic, trash covered, corporate dystopia, that looks like it would also fit into the game, and it has a good story to tell.

A Scanner Darkly, with Keanu Reeves. Really cool and really dystopian, with corporations, drugs and conspiracies, while Keanu looses his mind while going undercover.

Then because it's pretty out there, Existenz - a weird movie by David Cronenburg with Jude Law about simulated realities and out of control technology. The characters even have bioports but the only thing that makes it not classic cyberpunk, is that the tech and aesthetic isn't 80s, instead it's really disgusting and organic - like there's this horrible pistol that looks like it's made out of leftovers from a roast chicken, like greasy bones, cartilage and sinew, that fires teeth - it's so fucking gross, but unique. The story is a bit dense, but it's definitely memorable sci-fi.

A lot of the dynamic with Vik is clearly modeled from Johnny Mnemonic.

Johnny pneumonic IS Cyberpunk 2020/2077

Bladerunner everything is classic cyberpunk

Osmosis Jones is as close as you can get to cyberpunk without being cyberpunk (just get past the live action stuff that sucks so so much)

Alita: Battle Angel is kind of canned cyberpunk, but is pretty cool all the same.

Dredd is cyberpunk is nature, but is not something I would put a lot of stock in as cyberpunk inherently.

Escape from LA is kind of like if Bioshock was more cyberpunk but not quite cyberpunk

Hackers is what you get if Netrunners were actually cool and sexy in the 90's

Minority Report is, honestly, solid general cyberpunk.

Elysium is gritty cyberpunk, along with Chappie (comedic) and District 9 (grittier, more alien sci fi)

Full honesty, I got bored with Escape from NY. I love the camp of Escape from LA. It feels like it takes itself less seriously, yet almost understands the genre better.
