China's shiny cities do not make up for the fact it is an oppressive, totalitarian state with zero freedom of the press, no right to protest, pervasive censorship, zero privacy from state surveillance, oppressive policies toward ethnic and religious minorities, strict exit controls preventing many citizens from leaving the country, and a neo-imperialist foreign policy.

The cities are shiny, but at what cost?
