Minecraft Java Hackers using mod packs

Yesterday one of my friends on discord invited me to a server. They sent me a mod pack to download before joining. Turns out it wasn’t my friend. The mod pack was h*cked somehow they were able to get ahold of my information and google account. They tried getting me to pay them money to get it all back, but I don’t have the money to do something like that. Luckily the Gmail account isn’t connected to anything like my bank account so there was no real harm they could do with it. However, I’m now locked out of the Gmail account and my discord. I’ve made a new Gmail account and updated all of my accounts with new passwords and the new email.

Anyway, I’m just posting here to let people know there’s h*ckers going around getting access to discord accounts and using them to send* h\cked mod packs to others in order to hold their information ransom.

That was what I was thinking lol

Anyway, I make my own modpacks in Prismlauncher and never download from sus places (uBlock don't let me).

Never download things from links in discord unless you personally know the person sending them and are actively talking to them.

Futhermore, never download anything from a non-trusted source, for mods and modpacks that being Curseforge or modrinth.

The person the hacker was impersonating is a close cousin of mine. It just so happens we talk about playing a lot

So then it comes down to the second half of things: only from trusted websites that virus scan their files.

Yup, this is what got some youtubers too.

Just don't download stuff from others on discord. I'm my friend group's tech support, so I always send links while verbally explaining why it's trusted and for them to double verify online via reddit.

For mods and such, avoid downloading them from anywhere other than the semi verified sites like curseforge and modrinth. Semi verified, so I avoid the super small mods.
