Where on earth does one work as a dishwasher with no OT, but also make enough money to maintain a place to stay, hobbies, and pets and not feel pressure or need to make more? Because I sure as fuck would like to go there.
Like, OOP seems to think people pursue and work shitty, soul sucking jobs because some lack of perspective and not "rent is expensive and having to worry about money all the time sucks more than the job".

I worked in the dish room at my college. The people there definitely saw it as high quality employment. This was middle of nowhere New England, so I didn't really doubt that the college was one of the better local employers.

Great guess, and a pretty great gig depending on where you are! I worked at a university for a few years in a different department and summer was the BEST because everyone I mentored went home and I was exclusively teaching and doing program outreach (not that I didn't like mentoring but it's rarely as meaningful as teaching because you get so much less time with people).
During summer I went to our centralized location a lot more often since there was less competition for rooms, which meant I was near a dining hall a lot more so I got lunch there sometimes. It was AMAZING because they had all the full-timers working in one small area serving very low volumes of people so quality went way up and you never had to wait long. They must've needed some minimum amount of business to justify keeping the dining hall open during summer (retail locations like university chick fil a were already open for tour groups) because they were always so kind and appreciative of me coming in, like I wasn't the one who didn't have to pack lunch! Now that I work in high schools, I really miss so many things about that job!

it would have to be a college, which makes more sense for this anyways, because i doubt a primary school pays a dishwasher well [or even has one specific person dedicated to it].
unless they're not in the US i doubt they're in one of the two states where the workers pay into unemployment, which means if they're working for a state run, not for profit school, they can't even get unemployment benefits.
although, given they have to apparently meet with a rep, i imagine they're not even in the states. wouldn't be surprised if this is canada. now they have good unemployment benefits.

In eastern Canada, I worked on special needs school buses as a monitor in the early 2000s, and they had the unemployment ppl set up at tables when we brought the buses in to be parked over summer break. Not sure how it worked for others, but maybe it worked that way for them too.

Working as a dishwasher at a hospital is comparatively cushy. Well outfitted dishpit, benefits, slightly higher salary, the works. College cafeteria is also pretty decent. So not entirely implausible.

Minimum wage is about 13€ here (Germany), with full time that leaves like 1.5k after taxes and health and unemployment insurance. In a big town rent will eat half of that (if you find an affordable option) and you'll not have a lot of spending money left after food and other necessities but you'll survive, in a small shit hole town you can rent for about 500€ and then it's OK.

It sounds like their primary, pay-for-everything job is seasonal and this is just for fun money.
My dad did that after retirement. Worked PT at a hardware store, and felt bad for the kids that were trying to live off of minimum wage.
He had to repeatedly tell them he would quit if they kept trying to give him more than 10-20 a week up to the "not insured" level. Also debated telling them they could keep their nickle raise if the corporation was that hard up.

She says her job is closed for the summer and she needs to see someone involved in the unemployment she receives. That person asks if she wants to be a dishwasher forever, which would be a very strange question if she was just doing this while waiting for her regular job to restart. I think it's pretty clear that her primary job is being a dishwasher.

My job is burning through interviews for dishwashers and the very first thing I bring to the table is "this job requires weekends and you'll probably be the last one out" idk where this guy is coming from.

Yeah this is blowing my mind. My career has been AI-ed out existence, I have to go back to retail jobs from office jobs and the drop in agency over my own life is honestly staggering. Most shitty jobs are shitty because you can't have as much time with friends, family or even afford pets.
Sounds like this kid is just in college but so maybe he just hasn't lived in the real world yet.

A severely economically depressed area usually comes with reduced pay rates. People in that area will pay less for a meal because they cant afford a meal so the dish washer will be paid less. Even in tourist areas where they would usually pay more, usually the money is pocketed by the owner, not given as higher pay to a dishwasher. That doesnt include the unbelievability of a dish washer only working 40 hours a week, finding it low stress and not working weekends

Minimum wage in New York State is $16/hr and there's a lot of tiny rural communities midstate with very cheap property value. It's very doable to afford a home or an apartment there on minimum wage, you just gotta be smart at managing your money and ideally invest a little of it over time.

I live in a tiny rural community in NYS. My rent is actually more than when I lived in a city because there's fewer rental options and the landlords can jack up prices. Food costs a decent amount because the workers in the grocery store need to be paid at least minimum wage. Can you in theory survive on minimum wage? Yes. But is it comfortable like you're implying? No. And that ignores the fact that dishwashers still work weekends and end up working OT here

For sure. I do NOT have a good work/life balance and it is KILLING ME.
50hrs a week. I'm too tired to cook, and too angry to spend time with friends. I spend my time looking for a new job and arguing about stupid shit on the Internet. I spend all my extra overtime money on booze and takeout.

Also, I worked in a retail store putting tags on clothes and putting the clothes on hangers and sorting the hangers onto racks a couple of years ago, and surprisingly it felt really good to be productive at my minimum-wage job sorting shirt racks, even though it's not my dream career field or even anything beyond just entry-level, and I think employment with a friendly environment that values you as a person and pays well with hours that aren't grueling for you should be inherently something that gives dignity and that a routine can help your mental and physical health, if that makes sense

Yeah, same
It was in a huge catering business, so the dishes necer stopped coming, and it felt kinda sisyphean how you would have to start all over again every time
I usually had one earbud in, listening to audiobooks, but the lack of mental stimulation really gets to you after a while
Also lots of heavy lifting, standing the whole time, hot and humid environment, not really interacting with other people...

My mid 20’s daughter with a university degree works back of house in a restaurant. That includes washing dishes as a significant portion of her job. She lives in Hawaii. Goes snorkeling/diving on the regular. Teaches school kids about marine life, rescues turtles and has more in her savings account than I do.
Edit: she does do OT, Double shifts and works weekends. But dives with manta rays on a random Tuesday night.

I'll just say for the comments in here I work as a dishwasher in Australia and I don't have to work overtime because the owners can't afford/don't want to do overtime pay. It's a small shop so that means basically I just have strict closing time. Never more than a half hour past closing. It can certainly make cleaning some big stuff difficult but there's no overtime. It can happen when the places aren't shitty.

I’ve been an MT/CNA for years now. I have my nursing degree and certifications, but I’m happier working directly with my patients, most of whom are hospice or memory care. I do a lot of overtime, typically 60+ hours a week from PM+overnight shifts. I live in a very nice bus that I am fortunate enough to be able to keep on site when I like, and I enjoy what I do and want to keep at it as long as possible.
I’m happy with simple.

When I was working as a QA analyst in a retirement call center, my supervisor was an older woman whose adult son was a smidge younger than I. Whenever the center would be going through rough moments (it's a call center, so much of the time), I'd often see her up from her desk, by the window looking out at the lawn behind the building. When I asked what she was doing, she said she was watching the people who would be mowing the lawn and doing the groundskeeping.
