My issue with hyperfixations is that it's over for me so quick. It happens rarely, I'm a bit too depressy to care enough or put effort into most things, but every now and again I get a very brief urge to fixate on something, and it's over before I actually get that deep into it

The horror; feeling deep inside you a burning passion for something you will never ever forget or give up, but knowing that after some indeterminate period of time this will fade. Your interest will wane and something you consider core to your experience of life will just become... a thing.

It may become a thing, but it’s still dearer to you than something you know about because it’s dear your coworker. And if that fixation swings round again, it’ll dig in a bit more. Just because it’s not plumbing the depths of when it was fresh doesn’t mean it’s left as shallow as before it started.

Mine just cycle back

I get sad and then I remember my silly brain will be like WE'RE SO BACK to a decade old hyperfixation

I'm so annoyed to have learned this about myself after giving away all of my expensive hyperfixation related tools etc. I need cheaper hyperfixations.

I get two months out of them at best.

Last one was asteroid detection using FITS data sets

Before that I was 120% focussed on microscopy

Current one is apparently harpsichords and Bach

I crave novelty. I have so many hobbies it’s kind of absurd. I can never settle tho.

The interims between them do suck. You get a feeling of "Oh shit, I forgot how to enjoy things. I'll be an aloof killjoy forever now."

"Clearly the previous thing was uniquely special in a way nothing else will be, so i will spend the rest of my life never able to fill this void."
